Update from Chivvis on the building plans:

"The Chouteau's Landing Art Center (CLAC), formerly referred to as The Artery, formally changed its name in May 2008. CLAC will be housed in the 122,000-square-foot Powell Square building, thereby changing the St. Louis skyline. The Art Center will be modeled after The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA and will include working artist studios, educational centers, a rooftop event facility, galleries and boutique businesses.

Improvements to the facade are scheduled to start this year. Business and Space Planning proposals are in development and nearing completion."

This building is in such a prominent visual location..... I sincerely hope that this happens.... For decades it has been sitting next to one of the busiest entrances into our downtown saying "Welcome to Saint Louis! We love our derelict buildings!"

Statements of Commitment like this are great, and I appreciate Chivvis' announcement.

That said: Is there a concrete timeline on its full reconstruction schedule?

For reference, The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA:

http://www.torpedofactory.org/

The Torpedo Factory Art Center is the highlight of Alexandria's Potomac River waterfront, attracting approximately 500,000 visitors annually. Visit 82 artists' studios, six galleries, two workshops, and the Alexandria Archaeology Museum. Sign up for an art class with The Art League School. Then stroll along the waterfront, shop and sightsee on nearby historic streets, have a picnic on the dock behind the art center, or eat in the area's many fine restaurants.

The Torpedo Factory Art Center houses more than 165 visual artists who produce artwork in a wide variety of media including painting, ceramics, photography, jewelry, stained glass, fiber, printmaking, and sculpture. The artists invite visitors to join them in their studios and observe their creative processes. You may ask questions, learn about each of their art forms, and purchase original work.

In addition to 82 working artist studios, you will also find:

6 Galleries:

Target Gallery (National and international exhibition space)

The Art League Gallery

Enamelists Gallery

Multiple Exposures Gallery (Photography)

Potomac Craftsmen Fiber Gallery

Scope Gallery (Ceramics)

2 workshops:

When I suggested Christo might be interested in the building, of course I meant the Christo that's an actual artist, not the Cristo that sneaks around and vandalizes buildings at night.

If you're going up into the Powell please message me. Unlike the tight asses on this forum, I would love to explore that building. The only reason I haven't yet is because I hear it has an alarm.

Personally, I've got no problem with responsible people exploring abandoned buildings. But please follow hiker's creed: "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints".

Definitely. At least it sends the message that something will be happening there at some point. Here's a link to the web site listed on the banner: http://www.clacstl.com/

Does anyone know who is financing this project? It may just be my impression but this seems to really be flying under the radar for a project in such a big space and prominent location. Or may be I am just out of tune...

Same impression, the website is stating that something will happen with the facade this year. However, I don't understand why you would put the skin back on but not rehab the interior or why would a bank finance speculation on this building.

There's a piece about it in the STL P-D

I've seen this driving by to go to Busch. I had assumed it was a parking garage.

Type in 223 Cedar St. St. Louis on Google Maps. You can get a good Streetview picture of it.

I've been meaning to ask about that banner. I can't wait until something gets done with that building. Just imagine driving into downtown of a city you've never been to and Powell Square being the first thing you run in to. I might just turn around.

Well, the hole that was slashed in the banner, that has been patched, is now reslashed and accompanied by a huge green tag on both the south and west banners. I was driving by on the interstate so I was unable to make out what the tag said....

It would be nice if they could get this building cleaned up for the All-Star Game next summer - lots of media folks will be in town.

Word is that they will be getting the facade cleaned and windows in place while still developing the final interior plans.
