I don't think I'd describe Main St. in St. Charles as "uppity" but I think I know what he is talking about. There's a kind of thinking out there that green lights every country craft store but considers anything that appeals to more creative types as somehow disruptive to the historical fabric--funny I didn't know Lewis and Clark were fond of cow themed kitchen gadgets :)

I don't have a good feeling about this area. I fear for its survival.....any demo permits out yet?

Maybe if Chouteau Lake ever gets off the ground or maybe if they ever decide to beautify the riverfront we will see some more development down there.

Anyone heard when this project is going to get off of the ground or did the bum economy kill it. I was crossing the bridge the other day, WHAT AN EYESORE that building has become. All of the tags all over it make the gateway to the gateway city look ghetto!!!!

pictures 3 and 4 look uncannily like the foot clan's hideout from Turtles I.

Obviously, that would make the last picture the ooze.

^Did you steal or damage anything in the building? Is it more or less likely for vandalism to occur with more people in the building? The guard just may be an excellant judge of people and be doing a great job.

Chouteau’s lands Photography Hall of Fame

The International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum (IPHF) is moving to St. Louis from its current home in Oklahoma City.

The nonprofit signed a letter of intent to lease 10,000 square feet in the Chouteau’s Landing Art Center in the 122,000-square-foot Powell Square building in downtown St. Louis, said IPHF President John Nagel. He said a move date depends in part on how quickly the rest of the Chouteau’s Landing Art Center is developed.

That's fantastic. Now we just need more tenants to make sure the deal stands.

A photo from the IPHF website:

I hope it will look a little better than that! LOL

Anyway, a great addition to St. Louis - cultural and arts scene as well - and downtown to boot!

A nice score for Chouteau's Landing, but I'm still lukewarm about this "Arts Center" thing. The problem is, there's no art scene there now. By trying to create one from scratch, they're worsening the already badly spread out arts community in St. Louis. This type of thing would have been better in Grand Center or the CWE, or at least over on Washington.

Most other cities have a true "Gallery District", where multiple galleries have coordinated openings, and gallery hopping is actually possible. Ideally, these things develop organically, and the artists feed off of each other's energy. When everything is spread out from Downtown to Cherokee to Maplewood, you miss out on that energy.

^ Good points. I can see Chouteau's Landing being more of an office/services art center and not as much a thriving arts community, though I know they've said they want artist studios/galleries. Basically it will work if the price is right for artists.

I'm with you, Framer - that was my first thought when I heard about this, that it would be ideal for Grand Center. Still, it will be great to have Powell Square renovated.

In the critique, however, lies the beauty and diversity of the city. "Arts Districts" organic or otherwise isolated to an area are great, but we also are proponents of neighborhood strength. Doesn't the gained energy and diversity from neighborhood to neighborhood make up for a lack of a centralized arts center? If sects of arts venues sprout up around town each with an identity that reflects the neighborhood's atmosphere, I don't see how that is a missed opportunity. Not that I am opposed to this opportunity on Chouteaus Landing as it looks like a great one. Hopefully will spur development.

The last line of the story, however, is bone-chillingly Centeneesque.

Sounds like it may not be a sure thing.
