I don't think the NCAA's preference for Indianapolis is really because their HQ is there. I think it's because Lucas Oil and Gainbridge are both very high end venues, both far better than the Dome or Enterprise, and Indianapolis as a city invests far more into their downtown and attracting events and conventions than we do.

I am also encouraged by the fact that we were able to be a finalist, in part probably because we are a much larger and economically influential city than Indianapolis, but Lucas Oil is one of the single best stadiums in the NFL while the Dome....doesn't even have its naming rights sold.

If the stadiums were swapped, they would have chosen STL, because their choice is not based on where their headquarters are.

Fine if you think that I'm full of sh*t. But others have reported that before.
Did you know that Lucas Oil is "soft parked" every year for the Final Four as a backup in case the other host cities have issues with their stadium?

It also helps that the IUPUI medical center is very close by. A friend of mine went through there for medical school there and one of his jobs was to test the samples after games to check for performance enhancing drugs. So two NCAA officials and an Indiana highway patrolman would escort the urine samples to the other side of downtown where they'd have to go through an elaborate chain of custody thing. But because there's sometimes where he'd have to wait until 4 or 5 in the morning.

Its the same reason the NFL combine is held in Indianapolis. All the lab work is done at IUPUI.

I didn't once say you are full of sh*t, the only person who said that is you.

All I said was that they do not base their ultimate decision on where their HQ is. The last thing I said was that "If the stadiums were swapped, they would have chosen STL, because their choice is not based on where their headquarters are." Which is absolutely true.

I also mentioned how much Indianapolis subsidizes tourism and conventions. For example, Lucas Oil is offered to the NCAA rent-free while the Convention Center is offered at rent discount. These are types of things that most other cities don't do.

Whatever the reason Indy has gotten the final four about every 5 years since 1990. I also just assumed ncaa headquarters being there played into it.

Events at the convention center and dome over the next 9 months (this list was developed in the fall 2024, so it’s not the most up to date for smaller events)

What would it cost to simply lift the roof straight up say 50 feet. Then put a ring of video screens all the way around the inner ring created above the upper seats. And drop a center video screen complex from
the center of the roof too as offered to Kroenke in 2014.

That's probably a couple of hundred million dollars of work for not much reward.

I would argue that anything beyond general refurbishment of the Dome is too much unless something big changes in the situation. IE the Battlehawks/UFL find sustained success (which is a long shot at this point)

At this point, keep things relatively updated, fix the escalators, keep bathrooms in clean working order, and maybe mess around with some of the food stalls.

Not sure why the managing commission isn’t being pressed more on where naming rights stand. The “we’re considering it” isn’t sufficient given it’s been four (?) years.

The fact that STL doesn’t have a big corporate name on it is almost more embarrassing than the actual quality of the facility.

I’d just take the best deal they could get. At some point Money is money

The auditors report didn’t really find anything new. I did get a general sense that the RSA might be too apathetic but idk if that’s true. I do believe they should be more transparent with the public. Specifically, where do they stand on naming rights.

Who gives a damn? This old old news. Our state is so underfunded that it takes 10 years to churn out an audit?

Explore St. Louis chief says 2026 will be a downturn from this year, "anemic at best" in terms of convention traffic, but 2027 looks better.

He said they will be focusing on attracting leisure tourists to help make up for the decline in convention traffic.

I see about 200,000 expected attendees from Jan to mid August on the convention calendar right now, there are some reaccuring events after that to push it to 300-350k.

There is 10,000 person church congregation conference starting Sunday to next Friday and a 20,000 person marketing firm conference 10/2-10/5

It’s not bad, Brad Dean was open and honest about it. I expect 2026 to be 60-65% of 2025 and 2027 to be 125-140% of 2025. So in a 3 year span it evens out. What will make up a lot of that next year is what Union station has coming. It will bring probably couple hundred thousand out of town visits next year

What’s on the calendar now and what was said st the annual explore lunch on Wednesday

PostSep 20, 2025#622

Couple other items- explore is working to find a year round operator for center cafe

The city will decide what happens to the lot west of the convention center that was proposed
as a park during the construction of the ballroom project

PostOct 15, 2025#623

This parking lot, currently fenced off and dug up, will most likely remain a parking lot.  the previous renderings of a park are not happening.  Ultimately the decision is on the City but I believe Explore has communicated that it has no use for the Park since the botched expansion project didn’t expand down to this area.

New blues arena will most likely go where the current downtown main post office is located. Everyone in that area from the blues to Union Station would like to see that post office relocate
