This is supercomputing biggest turn out for this conference at 16,500 and I would say more money has been spent in downtown this week unrelated to sports then any time in a very long time. We went to Katie’s at 7:30 and they laughed when we asked how long for a table of 4. Clark and Bourdon said hours and salt and smoke said come back tomorrow

Have you had an opportunity to talk with convention goers? Have they had a good experience?
Is this convention returning?

i spoke to Brad Dean (CEO of explore) last night at the downtown event at BPV and he said the org that puts on the convention is very happy and theyve had a long-standing relationship with explore (we've had this conference a few times, it wasn't major news before the AI boom) they'll be back. When this was booked, the projected attendance was 11,000 and actual is close to 17,000
I enjoyed the post frozen four survey.. hope they are considering something like that for this event given its attendance from people all over the world. Then take that data and market the crap out of it.dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Nov 20, 2025i spoke to Brad Dean (CEO of explore) last night at the downtown event at BPV and he said the org that puts on the convention is very happy and theyve had a long-standing relationship with explore (we've had this conference a few times, it wasn't major news before the AI boom) they'll be back. The Raleigh Convention Center is currently burning down. Likely catastrophic. Will be interesting to see how they operationally handle planned events and how the region will react.

Sounds like it was a problem with some kind of gas powered appliance in the HVAC system. Hopefully they'll get it repaired quickly.

Leaders of the Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority on Wednesday will propose a merger with tourism agency Explore St. Louis as part of a measure that also seeks new funding to manage the Dome at America's Center.
The board of the RSA, which owns the Dome, will call for changes to Missouri law that would enable the merger that would put the Dome and the America's Center convention complex under a single entity and board, with appointees made by the Missouri governor, St. Louis mayor and St. Louis County executive.
As it works now, the state-created RSA owns the Dome, but has an agreement with Explore St. Louis to manage the facility for events. Explore also operates America's Center, which is owned by the city and connected via tunnel to the Dome.
The resolution before the board also calls for the existing 3.5% hotel tax levied in the city and county to be utilized "for the benefit of the Convention Center/Dome Complex" once other obligations have been fulfilled. The governments are using funds from that tax to pay back debt issued for a controversial, scaled-back expansion of America's Center. A separate, 3.75% hotel tax funds operations at Explore, but none of the money goes to the Dome.
The resolution also calls for exploring new funding mechanisms for the Dome and America's Center, and encourages Explore to enter a "long-term agreement with the Missouri Department of Economic Development to provide funding" from the state. It authorizes the RSA's lobbyists to work toward changing state statute to allow for the shift.
The Explore St. Louis board is set to consider a similar resolution this week, according to people familiar with the matter. That organization's CEO, Brad Dean, said in a statement that he couldn't yet offer a detailed perspective since its board hasn't yet met on the matter.
"We recognize our responsibility for prudent use of public funds and efficient management of two key regional assets, The America's Center and The Dome," Dean said. "The resolution to be discussed calls for responsible, future-focused actions that will eliminate redundancy, align oversight and create sustainable revenue sources to protect and sustain The Dome and America's Center. As we evaluate all options, we are focused on ensuing both facilities continue to support economic growth, expand opportunities for large-scale events and serve the St. Louis community for many years to come."
The Dome doesn't have sufficient funding for maintenance over the next decade, a recent state audit found, estimating a $67 million funding gap.
Until last year, the RSA — which has one full-time employee — received annual allotments from the city, county and state to be used for preservation of the Dome. But those payments concluded in 2024, an expiration outlined in the initial orders to build the Dome, which opened to the public in 1995. Only $17 million in preservation funds remained as of the end of March. The RSA also has $72.4 million from its share of the region's settlement with the National Football League over the Rams' departure for L.A. after the funds were moved into interest-bearing accounts.
The RSA has said it would use $15 million of the remaining preservation funds to address short-term needs in fiscal 2026, with the rest coming from its Rams funds. After that, a small amount of preservation funds remain, and will be utilized again before Rams funds.
An RSA board member said in June that the board aimed to upgrade the Dome in the short-term, while keeping $35 million in reserves for future upgrades.
St. Louis County has said it won't contribute more to the project, while the city of St. Louis says it can't go it alone. Dome management has also cast doubt on asking the state of Missouri for more funding, fearing they would catch flack for the $19.4 million in public spending used to design a riverfront stadium pitched to keep the Rams in St. Louis that was never built, according to the audit. It also criticized the current arrangement allowing for Explore alone to get rents from Dome events.
The RSA's response said the deployment of funds earlier this summer, and last year's report into long-term maintenance costs, were done thoughtfully to prioritize immediate improvements, most of which impacted event attraction. Its response also leaned on a reported $200 million in the facility's "annual economic impact" to the region and $25 million in tax revenue through events hosted there.

So we are giving to county $50 mil to take control of the dome permanently?
Getting a bit off topic here, but what does the dome get used for exactly? Like how many conferences use that space?

Plus some conventions use halls 1-5 for the "regular" type exhibits during the day and then the Dome (hall 6) is used for big presentations/speeches in the evening.dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Dec 03, 2025the Dome gets used by conferences and all kinds of other eventsPeterXCV wrote: ↑Dec 03, 2025Getting a bit off topic here, but what does the dome get used for exactly? From one of the Church Of God In Christ in meetings.
I don't have the interest to review the bills proposed in the senate and house regarding the convention center. So I asked ChatGPT to do it for me.
HB 2842 (6163H.01I)
This bill changes how the board of the St. Louis Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority is appointed, giving the Governor a larger role and reducing local appointment authority. The intent is to streamline governance and increase state involvement in managing major convention and sports facilities.
HB 2934 (6164H.01I)
This bill overhauls the governance and financing of St. Louis’s convention and tourism infrastructure by consolidating authority, expanding board membership, and creating a defined “convention district.” It authorizes new funding tools—including special property assessments and a district-level sales tax—to support long-term investment in downtown facilities and events.
SB 1538
This Senate bill restructures the Regional Convention and Visitors Commission, expands it to 15 members appointed by the Governor, Mayor, and County Executive, and merges its role with the Sports Complex Authority beginning in 2026. It also removes limits on long-term leases and allows new district-based taxes and assessments to fund tourism and convention infrastructure.
SB 1540
This bill mirrors SB 1538 and HB 2934 by consolidating governance of St. Louis’s convention and tourism assets and granting expanded taxing and assessment authority within a convention district. It is designed to create a more flexible, state-supported framework for financing and managing major downtown venues and attractions.

Unrelated to the Dome, but good entertainment day for STL. Enterprise also teasing Teddy Swims
The summer at Enterprise is already way more busy than last summer. From what I remember, there was like 3 events from May-July but they have 7 events scheduled already. Granted one is a reschedule.

It's a sad statement about St. Louis' place in the major tour food chain when we get excited that tours stop here.addxb2 wrote: ↑7:03 PM - 11 days agoUnrelated to the Dome, but good entertainment day for STL. Enterprise also teasing Teddy Swims

Every non top-10 MSA loves complaining about how tours skip town. I've done it!
I do however think that if/when STL slips out of the top 25 US MSAs (not even including Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver), STL will truly see fewer shows.

^ I don’t think so as long as this is true
Also Chris brown and usher are coming to the Dome in July. Another major concert in the works for the dome in Sept.

overlay the disposable income with age -- rather sure that STL is one of the older MSAs in the top 25. So, if/when we drop out of the top 25, fewer shows that appeal to younger people, while nostalgia acts continue to make STL a stop.dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑1:56 PM - 10 days ago^ I don’t think so as long as this is true
