^I was just thinking that's a rare event indeed. Very nice!
I wonder how many other recently constructed buildings on the medical campus can have floors added on in the future. Since land is becoming limited there, and some of the oldest structures very hard to demo due to their location in the complex, I wonder if a few more structures have this feature.

Recognizing all the credible accolades given so far, I'm very impressed with the technology investments & research that will be furthered here.
Here's the WUSTL press release: School of Medicine to expand Lipstein BJC Institute of Health building...
Also, by having more R&D investments at BJC WUSTL Med, this furthers the attractiveness for new office & lab space coming online at Cortex - yes, I'm talking directly to you, Ventas. Time to get moving on the Sandcrawlers again...

Between the future Lipstein labs and the labs at SLU's Doisy Center, STL is really fostering an environment for the highest levels of disease research and treatment. Add-in the Pfizer facilities in Chesterfield, and we are seriously a leading cluster in disease research & treatment. The expansion will house a 7,900-square-foot biosafety level 3 (BSL-3), or high-containment, laboratory to support research on infectious viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 and tuberculosis. BSL-3 laboratories use specialized ventilation and other systems that safely enable the study of viruses that spread through the air, so that scientists can develop diagnostic tools, treatments and vaccines — all essential steps in controlling epidemics.
The building expansion also will include a 5,100-square-foot Biologic Therapy Core Facility, following Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations (enforced by the Food and Drug Administration), for cellular therapies to treat cancer; 103,000 square feet of expanded laboratory space; and about 44,000 square feet of mechanical building-support areas.

PD article got a few updates. $150 million. They also considered building 10 additional floors instead of 6:
![]()
A 10-story addition was considered but a change in the International Building Code limited the vertical rise to six floors, Leonard said. Also limiting the new project’s height are the Institute of Health’s elevators, in the center’s adjoining 12-story south tower.

They'll have at least half of Cortex I empty at the start of the year. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes to fill it and who it is that fills it.gone corporate wrote: ↑Dec 09, 2021Also, by having more R&D investments at BJC WUSTL Med, this furthers the attractiveness for new office & lab space coming online at Cortex - yes, I'm talking directly to you, Ventas. Mobile crane on site today to start assembling the tower crane. Should have it up within a couple days I would think.
There has been a lot of drilling for what looks like a potential second crane base. It has gone really slow. Looks like they have been drilling into rock, but can't tell too much from a webcam way above.

Drove by today after the Blues game and one of two cranes due at this site has been partially erected:

The luffing jib crane is up. The red lights are a nice touch:

I guess soon BJC will be up to 8 cranes. Three at neuroscience, two at the cancer center, two at Queeny, and I'd imagine another for the 6 story addition and high-level disease lab. Wish they'd put the red lights on the two cancer center cranes and the third neuroscience crane though. How cool would that look coming down 40 at night?

$40M building permit application submitted to add 6 floors to 425 S Euclid the Steven & Susan Lipstein BJC Institute of Health
Because I have nothing but time to burn these days, I looked back through all the FAA determinations for the last two years. There is only one approved tower crane app for the Queeny site, filed on 07/15/2021 and approved 09/11/2021. That is presumably the existing crane that was approved at 498' above ground (to the tip of the jib in vertical position). There was a previous application for a 528' crane that was filed on 03/04/2021 that is still listed with a status of 'work in progress." There are many missing details on that app. So the question is was that an earlier app that got revised with a new app, or will there really be two cranes? The current crane does appear to have enough reach to get to all points on the site, but this is a big enough building that two cranes would make sense.
That's a really long way to say that I don't see a second tower crane base on the webcam. Where are you seeing it?

I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to post a screenshot, my browser is only letting me see live black and white images right now. Still…a lot more of you know a lot more about this stuff than I do…so what I may see as a potential base may very well not be.
Either way…I tend to agree that this project could get by with one crane. Only reason I assumed two was because of the unapproved FAA application that you mention and that Chris said he knew a crane operator that said there would be two cranes here.

I guess our questions are answered...here's a screenshot from the BJC website:

This is what I presumed to be the eventual second crane base:

Stumbled upon some staging diagrams for the Institute of Health expansion. Figured a few folks here might be interested. Looks like they'll have two cranes for this project, an assist crane and a tower crane.

Yep, the two crane question does appear to be answered now. Good to know definitively. But it will be a little longer wait. The circled square is just a big hole and trench boxes for sewer work that has been extending across the site. They dug it out over the past couple days.
That video did have some interesting info. Mainly, that they expect to have 3 above grade floors built by year end.
Thanks for the info! After looking at it in the daylight today I figured as much since it appears to be connected to that trough looking thing.MattnSTL wrote: ↑Jan 28, 2022Yep, the two crane question does appear to be answered now. $305.5M building permit application sublimated for Queeny tower replacement
Damn! That is a hell of a permit for the new Queeny tower. Do we have any idea what it'll look like?quincunx wrote: ↑Mar 01, 2022$305.5M building permit application sublimated for Queeny tower replacement
If that number holds, St. Louis City should be able to surpass $1 billion in building permit value for 2022 with ease.quincunx wrote: ↑Mar 01, 2022$305.5M building permit application sublimated for Queeny tower replacement

I think the new tower is going to look pretty nice. It will at least have a very BJC-feel to it.
I wonder if they will ever replace the nearby Plaza Tower, which from the outside looks every bit as dated as the old Queeny Tower.
