What about 10-20 people? The argument isn't that it was designed to dissuade individual people from being there, it was to dissuade large groups of people from congregating there.imran wrote: ↑Aug 23, 2021^ okay,…
Think about the size of a person and the size/weight of an ambulance. How likely is it that a pedestrian would block an ambulance from turning?
Apart from the protests that intentionally blocked the highways or roads, no reasonable person gets in the way of a first responder.
Since we’re still pursuing this line of logic (smh),
First: If you’re looking to discourage people (2 or 20) from legally congregating on public right of way, the design goals are misguided.
Second: if a thousand protestors showed up, blank walls and treeless sidewalks would be irrelevant to ambulance access.

Is protesting, or otherwise congregating, outside hospitals a thing?

https://news.stlpublicradio.org/2021-10 ... eeny-towerGroundbreaking takes place this month for a 16-story patient tower at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in the Central West End. BJC Healthcare says it will be built at the site of Queeny Tower, which opened more than a half-century ago.

BJC: Watch live as Queeny Tower at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is demolished
Is it? Are you basing that on the video rendering, or was that reported somewhere?RayfromSTL wrote: ↑Sep 30, 2021I'm pleased to see that it is taller than the old Queeny tower.
Not sure what the official height of Queeny Tower and the main hospital building was/is, but Google Earth shows it as 262' and 255', respectively.

I'm basing it entirely on the rendering. The new building does have less number of floors, I believe by 3 (19 vs 16) but the structure itself appears taller. The original Queeny Tower was 258' tall. In full disclosure, I haven't researched the height of the new building.urbanitas wrote: ↑Oct 06, 2021Is it? You are correct. According to the FAA Determination, the highest elevation of the new building will be 287' above grade, which obviously must include any rooftop equipment, or structures like the blowhole on top of the tube. In any case, that would make it almost the same height as the Park East condo building, minus the spire, but certainly taller than anything else on the BJC/WUSM campus...RayfromSTL wrote: ↑Sep 30, 2021I'm pleased to see that it is taller than the old Queeny tower.
Last chance to say goodbye:.

According to one of my Facebook group members, Queeny Tower is supposed to have two tower cranes. Cannot confirm independently, but he is a crane operator so I guess he knows what's up.
Probably correct, as the FAA Determination referred to the type of crane to be used as a luffing jib crane, which has the diagonal extension on top, and a shorter swing radius, thus multiple cranes.chriss752 wrote: ↑Oct 19, 2021According to one of my Facebook group members, Queeny Tower is supposed to have two tower cranes. I'd guess this is mainly so they don't have a horizontal boom conflicting with the helipad approach.
There is still one undetermined FAA application for a crane at BJC. It's been in there for quite some time though...not sure if this is for the second one or not.chriss752 wrote: ↑Oct 19, 2021According to one of my Facebook group members, Queeny Tower is supposed to have two tower cranes. The luffing jib crane had a scheduled start date of 11/2. Not sure if that'll hold, but they're probably getting close:

Looks like Ahrens Contracting is pulling the last of their equipment from the former Queeny site today. I would say that means demolition can be declared finished.
Mobilization is under way for construction this morning. Good to see no break in the action.

^I can't imagine Queeny will be donating any more money this time, so probably not? But . . . maybe? Are there still any Queeny kids in town? Maybe somebody can squeeze Bayer for a donation.
The college I went to had a dorm that was named after the previous dorm on the site. Always thought it was weird that they didn't name it after a new donor. But then again, lately dorms seem to have have generic names e.g. Grand Hall an Spring Hall at SLU.
Given the generic name of Parkview tower, I'm thinking it's very possible the new building will be Queeny Tower. Although that might be a bit of an insult to the Schoenbergs.

I think the last few years have shown why naming things after people can be problematic down the line. Esp living people who have plenty time left to show themselves.

Guess we'll have another crane in the CWE soon...
https://www.stltoday.com/business/local ... op-story-1
The university aims to add 160,000 square feet of high-tech laboratory space on top of the Steven & Susan Lipstein BJC Institute of Health. Plans include a 5,100 square-foot facility for biological cancer treatments and a 7,900 square-foot Biosafety Level 3 laboratory, specialized for research on deadly airborne viruses, such as the coronavirus, so that scientists can develop treatments and vaccines.

Can't wait to find out how much of the plaza they will close in order to build this.
^ All of it, until 2024. It’s right there in the article. Though there will be covered walkways to access buildings.
A rare instance of a building being constructed to accommodate additional height, and then it actually happening. Good to see.sc4mayor wrote: ↑Dec 09, 2021Washington U to build six floors on top of Med School building, including high-level disease lab
