Not that yours is out, either.

^ Whatever's clever. The only stumbling block I see involves the ability to coordinate with Zerolevity to obtain the forum's mysql database. That and having him point the urbanstl.com domain name to the new host server. Would he maintain ownership of the domain name or transfer it to you?

That is something that will have to be figured out as part of any change..

Usually, just clicking the Windows "Start" button will cause the page to load right away. When that doesn't work I just play spider solitaire while waiting for it to load.

I read a book. The whole book. :)

^A Picture book? :)

Seriously though, it may be a good idea for some of the people on here to crack open a book once in a while. There are some fine works on urban planning theory and urban history that some people here need to take a look at.

What if someone's running Linux or Mac OS X?

I have a Mac with OS X too, you can play games while the page loads.

phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database
I am seeing this more and more often. Now, every time I'm browsing the forum and I get this message, I wonder if that may have been the very last time that anyone will have seen or heard from the forum known as Urban St. Louis.

^ Valid point. Frustration has increased. Traffic has decreased. If this continues, I wouldn't be surprised if competitors started cropping up to usurp the throne.

It's delayed until at least the middle of May. After then, things will slow down among the people that need to do the switch.

^ I gave a small donation the other day - just click the "Donate" link on the upper right of the screen. This will help maintain the site in general and hopefully keep the speed up. Especially for us bandwidth hogs, it's really a great idea to give!

I got stuck on jury duty for quite a while and have been in and out of town lately as well as working on getting a permanent job. Some things really are more important. In the mean time, we've made it this long, we can survive a little longer.

companies fold all the time & zerolevity clearly has moved on & is leaving a shell up and running. i figure we're just a hardware failure, or personal crisis

away from losing everything .. you can talk circles all you want, but you're leaving the site in a very precarious position. and plenty of people have volunteered to help, if yall would only let them.

i wouldn't be heartbroken though, would be a good way to wipe out all the stupid posts i've made over the years :)

If they were going to be deleted, they would be by now. Those are a part of one of the more interesting chapters of the forum history and are not going anywhere.

Given the recent outage (I was getting the infamous 'phpBB : Critical Error could not connect to database' for 3 or 4 days) and the unbearably slow response times does anyone know the status of migrating this board to a reliable server?

Here is my hosting recommendation:

Site5

Site5 is reliable, cost effective and have great support.

If anyone else has some good hosting recommendations post them here.

finding a host isn't the issue. getting access to the current DB & needed files is, since the site owners are AWOL & our contacts on this board are too busy to get involved.

ZeroLevity hasn't updated their site since 2006. Maybe stop by 4258 Arsenal & see if they'll put it on thumb drive for you.

Who's paying the hosting bill?

BlueHost is excellent as well.

I donated a truly measly sum a few months ago. Hosting isn't too expensive and the bill could easily be paid if just a few of us supported the site. However, I'm not likely to give anymore at this time because the site has become nearly unusable.

^ lots of good hosts out there, but without the files off the existing server, what are you hosting...

^^ there is no bill. zerolevity is the host, they donate this site out of the goodness of their absentee heart
