Pretty much in name only. You didn't get that from my post before yours?

I see that even admins don't understand the lag issue on timestamps.

this forum needs to be upgraded and fixed soon,

it has been performing bad for way too long

I notice the posting seem to have gone down,

related to performance I am sure

Just very bad system admins I guess
I suspect it is a money issue. It is very easy for you so state "Just fix it" yet offer no funding for the labor to do so. I'll bet the admins are doing all they can, where they can.

I bet not

maybe some of the higher number posters should consider donating before a measly "junior member"

I will gladly donate some dough but dont want to see it going to someones 'happy hour'

and wont contribute funds untill some of the veteren member "buck up"

and we are told WHAT the plans are to improve response times

I still believe some good system admin cleanup can be performed to improve things

maybe deleteing the ballpark thread will help SERIOUSLY

Maybe the admins

should go clean up

after people who

hit enter twice after every line they type.

Maybe that would conserve a

If you are interested in speeding up the site, and expanding it, then we HAVE to find a way to make money to do so.

Again, please define "money." On the SLU basketball site, the owner noted how much was needed for a server upgrade, and people donated, and now it runs great. I can't imagine we're talking big bucks for a bulletin board site.

Nobody said anything about expanding it. We just thought it would be nice to make it usable again, like it was say, a year ago.

I'll work on finding out what exactly we need in definite terms. The biggest problem we have is the database size and guest traffic. I'm also going to try to get an upgrade to PHPBB 3.0 in motion. It's slow for me too, although not as bad as it was a few months ago.

There's little sense in throwing money at a problem if the root cause is undetermined. I could perform the determination for free. Looks like Matt is going to do this. If I can be of any help, please let me know.

What's the size of the database in megabytes? Regarding traffic, what information does the web analytics provide? This site isn't exactly slashdot or digg.

Upgrading to PHPBB 3.0 sounds like a good idea. Maybe even a more robust host if that's the bottleneck.

I'm guessing that most forum users don't use Internet Explorer. I am a firefox man myself. I encounter the same problems everyone is addressing. I just assumed it was either me, or the nature of a non-profit message board loaded with messages. Until I stumbled across something.

I was having issues with firefox a couple of weeks ago and used IE to view the forum. To my pleasant surprise, it worked flawlessly. No errors, quick load speeds, everything. I did some experimenting a few days later and in my tests, IE was way faster. I have gone back to living with the issues on firefox (I hate IE), but it seemed to make a difference. Anyone else experience this? If so, would an update of PHP versions help this issue?

And to you all hating on the moderators, they are doing this for free. I'd like to see you run a better site in your spare time.

Hmmmm I use IE at work (during my lunch hour of course) and it seems to be as slow in general there. It's very sporadic though...it will be fast for a bunch of clicks, then really slow for a few.

It's coincidence, I use IE and Firefox and the performance doesn't change.

I'm a member on another (totally unrelated) forum, and I've learned to read them simultaneously, switching over when UrbanSTL goes into slow-mo. It saves time, but it does get confusing at times.

I'm on IE and it's slow.

I would actually guess a good number of the total viewers use IE, since most people probably view from work. The heavy posters might be skewed a little towards FF, though I guess.

And free web analytics (http://analytics.google.com) would be able to tell which browsers are used in what percentages to access the site. But it's not an IE/Firefox issue at all. This site is likely easily rendered by any browser made in the last 5-10 years. By looking at the source data, I just see some javascript, a little CSS and simple html.

But it can't render anything if it's waiting for data to be sent from the server. It's very clearly a server or network issue at the host. The problems seem to occur during "higher" thresholds of utilization.

^Not necessarily. I don't think it is a traffic issue. It often works fine during lunch and between 4 and 5 PM, but then I log on at 11 PM, or early morning, and it is incredibly slow.

In the past 6 months or so, I find that I have to log in numerous times per day... It's super annoying considering it take 5 minutes to do sometimes... anyone else have to do this?

You are whiny.

No, administration is not may day job. I happen to have a decent job in the planning/development/preservation field. In fact, it's a volunteer position. I don't personally have any server access, so I am limited in anything I do to what PHPBB let's me do in and of itself.

Jeez, chill out, Citywatcher!

A. The admistration is aware of the problem and they've said they are working on it.

B. This is pretty much an all-volunteer operation; this is nobody's "day job".

C. This forum is a free service, offered to all of us by one generous (if mysterious) person/organization.

D. Suck it up and deal with it like the rest of us, or else offer a solution.

^ phpbb is solid. the infrastructure its utilizing is not. Besides, how would you convert the phpBB database to a different forum software?

Framer wrote:

In regards to the latter, I haven't seen anything to suggest they have been.

I have offered my time and expertise yet have heard nothing. Meanwhile, the status quo continues. People have a right to complain (but to be whiny and abusive doesn't seem overly productive and nice.)

People have a right to complain, but they could just stop coming here. If a Del Taco employee does me wrong, I will complain. If nothing happens, I stop going there (which is what I did with Del Taco). I don't keep going back and complaining when things haven't changed. The difference here is that I don't think anybody is making money running this board. If anything, its costing somebody money. I don't think anybody is making a wage running this forum 40 hours a week.
