Hey now, let's play nice. Matt doesn't have control of the web server. He's trying to obtain support from the guy that does. We just need access to copy the mySQL database and point the domain name to the new hostname...
Huh?
I don't own the server, nor have access to it. I'm also not the only one that runs this place. I may be kind of the front man because I have that fancy administrator title, but it's not my show. Innova8ion, which we have been working with and has nicely offered to host the site, has no more ability than I do to contact the owner. If I am not getting a response, what can I do about it? It wastes my time as well. I have to sit and wait for the server just like you.
I don't think you actually understand the work that goes into running this place. I read every single post on this site, deal with any issues that come up, and take care of administrative tasks such as deleting spam accounts. It takes a lot of dedication and some of my free time to do that. I get nothing out of this site besides the enjoyment of seeing the discussion of everything going on in this city.
Your constant complaining and pointless posting has done nothing to help out. Remember, this forum is a free service.

pass the torch to someone who cares and can get the issues resolved
you obviously dont care
let someone who has offered help take the reins and stop wasting our time with your NON-EFFORT
What don't you understand about urbanstlouis owns the server and MattnSTL does not have access to it?
Can we please get a rule in place to get these clowns to stop posting uninformed, unsubstantiated nonsense.

The site seems quite slow today. Would it be possible just to re-located to a good server. I use a server in Atlanta, and it's fast.

I'm going to assume this is sarcasm. If it isn't, I'm just going to advise you read this thread from start to finish to answer your own question.Chris_on_Kingsbury wrote:The site seems quite slow today. my apologies Matt
All I can take is that you are being truthful in your response..
one might think that by your distancing yourself you are shucking responsibility ??
that fancy title has gotten you in trouble and leaves you wide open for complaints..
maybe I have a little less patience than others, but there are many times when I have not replied hastily, trying to maintain my patience.
and yes untill this is figured out it is difficult for everyone.
ref from wiki (not that it matters)
Patience (?p?-sh?nz) is the state of endurance under difficult circumstances.
This can mean persevering in the face of delay or provocation without becoming annoyed or upset;
or exhibiting forbearance when under strain, especially when faced with longer-term difficulties.
It is also used to refer to the character trait of being steadfast.

Why wouldn't I be?

Nope. Just trying to explain why I can't just snap my fingers and solve the problem.
that fancy title has gotten you in trouble and leaves you wide open for complaints..
Maybe, but I'm a big boy and I can handle complaints. What I don't like is to have to re-explain this stuff to the same people over and over. I've replied to you in PM's and in this thread more than once. You don't seem to ever get it.

Maybe. I don't know.

I agree. I have never said it was not. It's a problem for me too. It becomes even more disruptive when you spend the amount of time on here that I do.
We've got a server with the most recent version of phpBB already set up for it. It's tuned for performance and I've configured it to allow the embedding of YouTube and various other video sources as well.Chris_on_Kingsbury wrote:The site seems quite slow today. Perhaps those graphically inclined can design a spiffy urbanstl logo in .gif format that matches the template? The dimensions are 250 x 70 pixels.

Then stop using the damn site. It is an INTERNET FORUM. Nobody is getting rich or even making money off of this forum. If you think you can do a better job, get the software, get the host, and start your own forum and we can all start using your spot instead [sarcasm] seeing as how they are so damn negligent here [/sarcasm]. Get a life.
just downloaded the new Google chrome browser and the first thing I did was checked out urbanstl and so far it has been much, much faster than mozilla. It is still not completely without some slow downss, but so far so good.
ah bummer, I think I just got lucky for a while as things down again for a while. However, it does seem to load pages much faster than mozilla or explorer.
Google Chrome is designed to increase the rendering speed of rich web applications (AJAX) which are largely comprised of JavaScript. Google has succeeded in that respect: http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-10030888-92.html.
However, the browser utilized on this forum doesn't matter for two reasons:
1. The problem is server-side, not client-side.
2. This forum is not javascript/AJAX intensive.

PS - Is ZeroLevity back from vacation yet?

SO any answers MATTNSTL??
how much have you been online today.
REAL slow and unresponsive today
are you logged on somehow in ADMINISTRATOR mode, that is locking out or stopping page refreshes??
have you figured out what to do about the ongoing problems??
my guess is NO
solutions have been mentioned and help offered, guess you choose to ignore assistance
oh joy for all of us,, thanks SO much for the effort

Damn you are whiny. If you don't like the forum, you don't have to keep coming back.
Just because I am logged in doesn't mean I am here. Or in the case of the last hour, I have been deleting spam accounts from the last 4 days. Normally I would be in class right now but I am at home sick.
I have an almost full time job and am a full time grad student. This is not my job. I worry about the speed when I have time. I am working on a similar but slightly different solution than the one inno offered, hopefully with his help.

Sure, I'd be glad to provide help.MattnSTL wrote:I am working on a similar but slightly different solution than the one inno offered, hopefully with his help.
^ Whatever's clever. The only stumbling block I see involves the ability to coordinate with Zerolevity to obtain the forum's mysql database. That and having him point the urbanstl.com domain name to the new host server. Would he maintain ownership of the domain name or transfer it to you?
That is something that will have to be figured out as part of any change..
Usually, just clicking the Windows "Start" button will cause the page to load right away. When that doesn't work I just play spider solitaire while waiting for it to load.
I read a book. The whole book.campbv wrote:When that doesn't work I just play spider solitaire while waiting for it to load.
^A Picture book?
Seriously though, it may be a good idea for some of the people on here to crack open a book once in a while. There are some fine works on urban planning theory and urban history that some people here need to take a look at.

What if someone's running Linux or Mac OS X?campbv wrote:Usually, just clicking the Windows "Start" button will cause the page to load right away.
I am seeing this more and more often. Now, every time I'm browsing the forum and I get this message, I wonder if that may have been the very last time that anyone will have seen or heard from the forum known as Urban St. Louis.phpBB : Critical Error
