Sorry if this is the wrong forum...but does anyone else experience this? Maybe every few clicks - whether to the front page, a single thread, or a reply - the request takes up to several minutes to complete. Clicking again doesn't help. Then maybe I can get a few clicks in that all go really quickly. I'm using a number of browsers in differing locations (DSL and LAN), so I don't think it's my PC - but am open to suggestions if anyone else thinks it's not a forum issue.

It needs more juice under the hood.

^^It is the forum. It has nothing to do with your connection speed. Love seeing that "Critical Error" message just about every other time I log on.

It happens somewhat often. Just some thoughts...

- Consider upgrading to PhpBB v3.x

- Utilize php/mysql caching

- Conduct an SSH telnet session w/ the box during peak times and run "top". That should show the various processes running on the box and cpu/memory utilization.

- Then there's mytop, a free performance monitoring program for mysql: http://jeremy.zawodny.com/mysql/mytop/

I always just assumed the forum has grown beyond what the administrator's expected, so they currently don't have the bandwidth to support it. I kind of thought that's what the new "Donate" link was all about.

^ From what I have observed, this is a backend (system administration) issue. It's likely not a network issue although simple network diagnostics would confirm that.

Yo, Mods -- how much money we talkin' about to upgrade performance?

Is this forum on a dedicated server or is it sharing one? Dedicated server(s) would cost money but would help out a whole lot.

I'd be willing to do the sysadmin troubleshooting for free. That'd indicate what the real problems are. A dedicated server would likely be way overkill for this site. It'd run very smoothly on a properly-run shared server.

Or I could just host it for free with my account in a datacenter I utilize. All the governance would remain the same -- everything would be the same save for the performance issues.

^ It may be worth noting that the true owner of the site urbanstlouis is also owner of "Zero Levity" which is apparently the hosting site. I don't foresee the hosting responsibilities changing.

^ True. There are many lurkers and registered users of this site who may be looking for hosting services. It could be advantageous for them to ensure these performance issues are addressed.

I have that problem several times daily. I find it quicker to log out and then log back in.

Database deadlocks, perhaps? I'm assuming mySQL is in use.

Owner might take into consideration that slow performance isn't much of an attraction if he's using this to promote his primary business.

It's no longer his primary business. I'll post more later.

Yikes! I just wandered around the Zero Levity site and felt like I'd wandered into the Star Trek episode where a hologram was running long-dead (but still deadly) software. The "news" feed likes to Computer World articles from 2006; the faq shows support of 10-year-old webpage-writing software. Does anyone know if the company even exists anymore? (Perhaps the site is running on an old 486 machine with floppy disks.)

Whatever the issue is just find someone to fix it

I complained to the admins in a PM and wasnt given any good reason why

I was asked for a donation though

I dont post that often but like to read during the day

this forum needs to be upgraded and fixed soon,

it has been performing bad for way too long

I notice the posting seem to have gone down,

related to performance I am sure

Just very bad system admins I guess

UrbanSTL is very slow.

Why that is I just really don't know.

I asked the mods why

is the performance not high?

They just shrugged and asked me for more dough.

I suspect it is a money issue. It is very easy for you so state "Just fix it" yet offer no funding for the labor to do so. I'll bet the admins are doing all they can, where they can.

I bet not

maybe some of the higher number posters should consider donating before a measly "junior member"

I will gladly donate some dough but dont want to see it going to someones 'happy hour'

and wont contribute funds untill some of the veteren member "buck up"

and we are told WHAT the plans are to improve response times

I still believe some good system admin cleanup can be performed to improve things

maybe deleteing the ballpark thread will help SERIOUSLY

HINT HINT
