I think it is a change in the political climate and the increase in social medial attention these things get. Things that alarm people will always get more attention - kind of the same story as customers who are unhappy with service tell 10 but those who are happy tell 1 or 2. It is a hard battle to fight.
They should have put turnstiles on it from the beginning!

How about St. Louisans just quit shooting each other because, you know, it’s um, murder.

How about we guarantee food and housing so the streets aren't filled with desperate people who have nothing to lose?whitherSTL wrote: ↑May 20, 2023How about St. Louisans just quit shooting each other because, you know, it’s um, murder.

Comrade Haversham, you live in the wrong country. Or at least the wrong state.

Last fall, a Board of Aldermen bill attempted to make parking more secure on lots like those around the stadium. But Les Sterman, chair of Citizens for a Greater Downtown St. Louis, says that among those opposing the effort was none other than the Cardinals' ownership.

Several years ago when I used to ride my bicycle to work downtown through the wasteland south of Arch I took a video of about 15 knocked out car windows in a row, perfectly spaced out, it was strangely beautiful.

There was a shooting near Delmar and DeBaliviere (Delmar and goodfelllow to be precise) last night. Quite unfortunate and by reading the comments on nextdoor, looks like it was not that surprising for that particular neighborhood. So common that it didn't make it to the news.

On the homicide front we will be at about 68 for the year or about -2 from 2022. may was pretty bad, we started the month at 46
Huh?
Sounds fishy as Bar101 and DB's are/were the only 3am licenses in the area and I don't think they use them any more since the pandemic. Two women and a man were robbed and carjacked in Soulard early Monday morning. Police say the suspects drove away in their car.
Three people were walking to a nearby bar at around 3 a.m. when an older, dark-colored Cadillac sedan approached them.

Not surprising at all. As a resident a short walk away it’s pretty common to hear gunshots in that direction frequently. Between the gas station and lucier park it’s almost weekly now of some sort of shooting.stlurbanist wrote:There was a shooting near Delmar and DeBaliviere (Delmar and goodfelllow to be precise) last night. Bad month in KC as well, currently at 74. +8 (12%) from 2022 and +2 from peak 2020 which ended at 179.dbInSouthCity wrote:On the homicide front we will be at about 68 for the year or about -2 from 2022. may was pretty bad, we started the month at 46

All of their homicides are also south of the river and in an area that’s about our size and population

Homicide clearance rate jumps to 75% in St. Louis. Police credit cameras, communication
https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/homicide-clearance-rate-jumps-to-75-in-st-louis-police-credit-cameras-communication/article_126f9d36-f818-11ed-9bff-0f069b9a0dcd.html#tracking-source=home-top-storyHomicide clearance rates are perhaps the most crucial metric for measuring a police department’s success at crime-solving — especially in a city like St. Louis, where yearly murder rates are consistently among the highest in the country.
Police don’t offer a single reason for this year’s improvement, but Blaskiewicz said it’s due in part to the growing number of surveillance cameras throughout the city and better communication across the department.
Clearances are more than just a simple yardstick for how many of the current year’s homicides were solved. A clearance rate gives detectives credit for solving old cases. And the rate includes instances where police are confident they have the killer but prosecutors refuse to file charges, put the case on hold or tell detectives to do more investigative work.

Interesting - wish we would have had a good May so we could have been a part of this...
SLMPD made 32,586 traffic stops in 2022 down from 45,154 in 2021. About half as many as a decade ago - 67,984 in 2013. From the state's Vehicle Stop Report.
https://ago.mo.gov/home/vehicle-stops-r ... ve-summary
An aside: 59% of the stops were of nonresidents. An example of how calculating rates using the city's population as the denominator is problematic.
