Once again, 66 square (city) miles defines the whole STL Metro. Time for city to rejoin the county to at the very least squash this misleading info!

According to the article, we fall behind KC when it comes to quality of life and openness - two issues STL has struggled with. However we outpace all metros in investment trends, which is pretty awesome and worth bragging about!
This shows that we are on our way up when it comes to global visibility in the business world, but we can (and must) do better to continue attracting and retaining foreign investments in STL.

Based on the metrics they used, I'm guessing this is just data for the City of St. Louis.
It's not totally clear, but my money is on them using stats from the independent city. The quality of life rating seems awfully low if they're taking into account surrounding counties...We limited our selection to cities in 50 states and DC with a population greater than 250,000, based on 2020 Census place data.
We used metropolitan-area data when city-level data was not available or when lines were more difficult to draw. Dallas and Fort Worth, for example, share the same international airport. The number of international flights out of Dallas-Fort Worth was assigned to both cities in our ranking.

When it comes to international investment opportunities in our region, I wonder how much we've lost in new business footprints simply because of metrics like this being used by foreign companies as part of their due diligence and only considering one part of the region and not the whole. I have to believe business groups like GSTL have started to incorporate all areas and not just the city when pitching new investment opportunities (which it looks like they have), but it makes you wistful for what we had/may have lost.

BUT we do have some of the most liberal liquor laws. No state stores. No half proof. No dry areas. 3am closing time in the city. No separation of liquor and beer sales. Grocery stores carry everything. About the only thing we don't have is to go cups/open carry.

Don’t forget that open alcohol is permitted in vehicles. And in the city, it sure feels open container is permitted on the streets.

These rankings, that just divide by city population with no normalization for metro context, work both ways to boost us in the rankings. St Louis city has more skyscrapers per capita than Chicago. And St Louis City buys more major league tickets per person than any city in North America. Even without a football or soccer team. Folks scream untrue for these rankings but believe crime City rankings.

Yes but even when you account for metropolitan area, our crime is still an embarrassment. It may not be the worst, but it’s still awful. And it’ll stay that way as long our legislature insists on equipping every felon and lunatic with high caliber, high capacity firearms.

I’m talking about the open containers like you see in New Orleans or Las Vegas. A few bars in Soulard do go cups on the sly at closing time but I’m talking street sales and openly walking out of bars all the time.

^I rather thought to go containers were permanently legalized statewide during plague. (Maybe the one and only decent thing the state legislature did lately.) I bought my wife at least one to-go margarita from Chimichanga's on South Grand. Seemed like it was here to stay. You're probably not supposed to drink them on the street, but I can't imagine many cops would say much.

I have walked past many cops downtown while holding a beer bottle and they never say a word. It is usually in the context of a baseball game, parade or other clearly organized event, though.
