The New York Times published a piece on Scott Air Force Base's role in shipping aid to Ukraine, it also talks more broadly about how the base is important to coordinating military transportation logistics for the US in general.

It's home of US Transportation Command, which handles logistics for the DoD. The USTRANSCOM is one of 40 something 4 star generals in the entire US military + we have another 4 star at Scott that leads USAF air mobility command. It's a pretty important installation when it comes to movement of troops, equipment and high profile people.

A friend of mine works for TransCom and had to brief one of those generals a few weeks back. He doesn't talk about his job in too much detail, for reasons, but he's had some wry smiles at some of my speculation.
^ Once again, not national news. This would fit better in one of the energy threads...

^The yellow death star on the lower left is surprising. Maybe it's getting ready to bring some of those prices down . . .
Anyway, aside from stellar silliness, it's a great map. And graph.

Not sure if this is the right thread for this, but close enough, right?
I received the Regional Arts Commission e-newsletter a couple weeks ago and have some thoughts about it...
RAC Takes on the Big Apple
Start spreadin’ the news…the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis traveled to New York City at the end of July to deliver a message to national media outlets: St. Louis is an artstown! CEO Vanessa Cooksey joined local business executives, entrepreneurs and Explore St. Louis on a special panel to encourage writers, editors and influencers to take a trip to our great region. Get an inside look of the visit to NYC in this video.
I think most of us agree that St. Louis has a serious branding problem. For a variety of reasons, we have not been successful in communicating a bold, cohesive or compelling narrative about what makes St. Louis truly special. Watch the video linked above... While I applaud the efforts of the featured panel in this video, I can't help but think we missed a golden opportunity to promote what really makes St. Louis a standout city in terms of arts and culture, and instead rehashed the same old talking points. So we're promoting St. Louis's vibrant arts and culture scene in NYC to arts writers and influencers from all over the world, yet no mention the variety of unique and edgy arts-related offerings that St. Louis should be trumpeting... uhh, Paint Louis?? Artica? Lo-Fi Cherokee? Nightchaser? People's Joy? Show-Me Burlesque Festival? Nevermore Jazz Ball, St. Lou Fringe? SLAM Underground? Etc. Pretty glaring omissions, wouldn't you say?
On top of that, while the panelists are all important figures in the local arts community, the lack of age diversity is disappointing-- not exactly an accurate representation of St. Louis' actual multifaceted art scene. The presentation wasn't bad- it just felt predictable, unprovocative and "establishment" to me. Shouldn't we be promoting the less-polished, lesser-known creative muscle that exists here in addition to the legacy cultural offerings? Curious to know what other UrbanSTLers think about this...

Well, we made it onto another YouTube channel of some note: Legal Eagle spent roughly the last third of Lawyers Gone Wild on the McClownshoes. They're the gift that keeps on giving. Our moment in the witness booth starts at 11:44.

St. Louis was named the 2nd best city in the nation for black entrepreneurs.
https://www.incfile.com/blog/best-city-for-black-entrepreneursWhile following your passions is crucial to loving your job, making money is an important focus, too. Even more so for small business owners, whose livelihood relies on how successful their business becomes. That’s why St. Louis is such a great place to plant your company’s roots, as it's one of the 16 cities we studied where Black-owned businesses are making over six figures a year.
Intrigued? Start a St. Louis, Missouri, business and you’ll also enjoy perks like a low cost of living and a high Black population.

^I recall seeing something of the sort a year or so ago elsewhere. Glad to see things are still going well.
Last I remember the NAACP had a travel ban on St. Louis.

This is behind a pay wall but a great article this week in the Times of London about the economic conditions in St. Louis and Missouri. They interviewed at great length someone from the London Tearoom about how the difficult economy is forcing them to change their business model. They also discussed with the British Hon Consolt for the state how he works to drum up business. All in all very complementary to the city and state.

I'm not surprised about black entrepreneurship in St. Louis. My father owned a very successful carpentry business and I come a family or successful black entrepreneurs. Most of the middle class black people I knew were also entrepreneurs. I think that St. Louis gets a bad rap about being a bad city for black people. I even question a lot of the income statistics, because honestly a lot of people in St. Louis (especially black people) only deal in cash and do not report all of their income to the IRS. Not to downplay the black poverty in the region, but to be honest there are a lot of successful black people in St. Louis compared to a lot of other cities. I've also known many black St. Louisans to move to places like Atlanta, only to return and say it was overrated. My ex-wife was from Pittsburgh and she would always be impressed by the number of solidly working class and middle class black neighborhoods in St. Louis. Sometimes perception is not always reality.
