It’s also illegal to drink beer from a bucket on a street corner in the city or drive your house-drawn carriage with the lantern on the right side of the carriage.

Cops could care less about people walking around with a beer because you know they would do it if they’re off duty. As long as you don’t drive, you’re fine.

Sidewalk drinking definitely should be legalized since police don't enforce it at all, and it's a stupid law that serves no purpose other than to use to harass people who are causing no harm. If there's other harm being caused, we have ordinances for all of that.

I too have walked past cops all the time with a drink, rarely in the context of an event, because why should drinking on the sidewalk be limited to when everybody else is doing it?

Walking around, especially on somewhat desolate stretches like downtown-to-midtown, with a beer is one of life's great pleasures.

4 Hands evens advertises to-go beer for walks to the Cards game. The parking lots there include beer with parking. I think a hotel has a sidewalk beer stand by Busch. 4 Hands had one in Kiener for a time during games.

"it's a stupid law that serves no purpose other than to use to harass people who are causing no harm."

That's exactly it. Cops can very easily choose when and to WHOM they enforce the law, which becomes a recipe for discrimination.

Under fascism there's the in-group who laws protect but do not constrain, and the out-group who laws constrain but do not protect.

This gloomy take on February apparently makes the national rounds every year around this time.

^You can't argue with that kind of truth. (I say as I sweat in the tropics and look forward to getting home to my happy grey February.)

Yeah we’re spending February in West Palm Beach. I forgot there are still bugs here. I’ll still be scratching bug bites when I get back to Kirkwood in early March.

^I think I got exactly one mosquito bite in the entire trip. (That I'm aware of anyway. Not sure how many of the little buggers might have had a snack without my knowledge.) All said, the bugs here are much much worse here than in Vietnam. It's sweaty, but maybe the lizards keep the bugs at bay. Still, good to be home. Will post aircraft video when I recover from the time in the air.

Also: Avoid LAX. That place really is kind of a pain. Left hand doesn't know what the right is doing, and you have to go outside to get from anything to anything else. (From the basement to the first floor of the same building, say.)

Noseeums are no joke. You can get dozens of bites, I’ve gotten hundreds one time, without even knowing.

The tragedy Downtown involving the volleyball player and Kim Gardner's incompetence has blown up all over the national news outlets.

“Blowing up” is a bit strong. It’s not even a lead story on Fox

That doesn’t mean it’s “blowing up”.

As of this moment (on the F’ing websites) it’s the 20th article down on Fox’s homepage and it’s not even about the incident it’s about the AGs announcement.

It’s not on CNNs homepage.

It’s not ABC news homepage.

It’s not on CBS news homepage.

It’s not on the NYT homepage.

It’s not on the WaPo homepage.

Hell, it’s not even on Newsmax or OANN’s homepage.

It’s being lightly covered by conservative national media. That’s it.

^Like most social media, I suspect Twitter feeds us stuff based on our location, so your feed might be different if you're in Cleveland, or Flagstaff. It's certainly blowing up on my phone, where local leads, but that's not the same as really blowing up nationally. Was talking about it with a fairly engaged friend in Chicago and it was the first she'd heard about it. All the major sites are carrying it, but not necessarily as top news.

^ This is true, but considering the weakness of local media in most cities across the country you can probably safely bet your ass that most local newspapers/local TV are pulling their sh*t from the AP Wire…meaning this will most certainly make an appearance in most cities.  Just pick up a copy of the Post-Dispatch (referring to their reliance on the AP, not their reporting on this particular incident).

^Of course it will. But that doesn't mean anyone will see it if it's buried on the internet equivalent of page twelve. Like everyone has said, this is absolutely out there. But that's not necessarily the same as the leading story, which kind of felt like the implication behind the phrase "exploding" to me. It's exploding on my phone. But Chicago hadn't heard about it until I mentioned it. Might survey folks tomorrow and see if that's changed. Ask Twin Cities or San Francisco. Now if it makes it to Nottingham or Aylesburry Bucks . . .

^ Yeah, I can’t agree with this. I’ve been fielding texts and calls from suppliers and customers across the country asking what the fu*k is wrong with St. Louis. Probably doesn’t help that my company’s HQ is here but still…it’s not “buried” anywhere. It’s embarrassing.

^Eh, small sample statistics. Your sample is bigger than mine. It's just anecdotes. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm confident it's a bigger story here than elsewhere, and nobody says "what the ***** is wrong with St. Louis" like St. Louisans, but it's a real story. I don't think anyone is trying to deny that. We're just arguing the semantics of "exploding." And whatever else may be the case, Gardner is in over her head and she needs to step down.
