Happy Joes on Watson in Marlborough is closing tomorrow. Many fond memories going there as a kid. There really needs to be an effort to develop a more sustainable vision for Watson, as with recent closures it has gotten even bleaker.
Damn, that's unfortunate. Not really willing to make the drive out to St. Peter's for it :/
I believe Happy Joe's as a whole is working on growing their brand/footprint, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are more in the metro not too far into the future.
My guess is the franchisee got orders from corporate to modernize and it didn’t work out.

It’s weird how some brands that struggle/die in America survive overseas. A friend told me Shakeys Pizza does well in the Philippines and UAE.

Happy Joe's was my childhood. Out of my first 15 birthdays, I probably celebrated 12 at the Happy Joe's on Watson. My parents have been going there since before they got married. This hits me hard personally.

With that being said, I am not surprised to hear this news. You are correct that they tried to modernize the look of everything. They kicked out the old school arcade games and brought in a bunch of giant screen iPhone games like Fruit Ninja. They did away with the classic grungy pizza bar look, got rid of all the stuff on the walls, and painted everything white. They kept a lot of the od elements (like the old salad bar, the tables and chairs, and the sound dampening ceiling tiles, but it just wasn't cohesive anymore. Plus they got rid of the weeknight pizza bar which was pretty disappointing as that was why we went there so often.

Maybe somebody can lease it up, paint everything green again, and call it Happy Moe's or something. Also is there anyplace else in town that makes a similar style pizza? Happy Joe's just had a taste that I've not seen replicated elsewhere.

Reopening in September, so it’s a extensive renovation
That's actually not long. I'm not sure what sort of financial resources they have but if I were them I would have moved the bar to the back wall, knocked the walls out and improved the flow. 6-8 weeks sounds more cosmetic.

You're too young to have experienced it db but Maggies used to have bands in that back room in the 80's, 90's and even early 2000's.
They are spending over $2,500,000 on the remodel according to the various permits filed

The south city restaurant that was going to be moving to downtown suddenly changed course and will now technically be in the Central West End.

They will be very close to IKEA, SLU, and Foundry.

One would think they would have pushed for the start of the school year.

There appear to be people working, but it's rather slow speed as you'll only see one work truck at a time. A few weeks ago it was a lone tuckpointing company truck out front with a guy on the roof taking pictures.

To be fair, it can be tough getting contractors these days.

I didn't look there. Thanks for pointing me that way as that appears to be their only active social media channel.

The most recent picture shows the refinished floors. All ready to have beer (and god knows what else) spilled on them.

Looks like Racanelli's on Euclid is closing up shop. Was closed and had boxes up against the windows.

Sad because I loved their food, but I have never received such consistently hostile service as I had at their Grove location. It was so strange how mean they were (well, particularly one employee who was often there) and this affected multiple other people I know too.

That stinks.  Anyone had their pizza recently?  It used to be really good (haven't had it in ~15 years, though)

I go to the Webster location occasionally - still good!

It was almost like Ed Debevics or Dick's Last Resort where their schitck is the servers are mean to everyone.

If want to be growled at/given dirty looks I'll go to Carls in Brentwood.

That's right - I forgot about that location.  I'd go there when I lived in South City.  So, only 7+ years since I've had it.

It appears that Hawaiian Bros, a popular Kansas City and Texas chain, is entering the market.

It looks like their first Missouri location will be opened at 13963 New Halls Ferry Rd in Florissant on October 15; their first Illinois location will be opened at 2386 Troy in Edwardsville on October 22.

We've got one of those popping up here in Iowa, too.  Must have received an infusion of capital from somewhere.

They do extremely well in Kansas City and Texas.

I expect that they will do well in St. Louis and the other markets that they're entering.

I think Kansas City has 12 locations, all of which have been opened in the last four or so years. It wouldn't shock me to see Brentwood, Kirkwood, Chesterfield, St. Charles, Wentzville, and all the other usual suspects get locations over the next several years.

They don't seem to be very urban with their locations, but I guess I could see Hampton, Watson, Kingshighway, or a similar corridor in the city landing a Hawaiian Bros.
