Reopening in September, so it’s a extensive renovation
That's actually not long. I'm not sure what sort of financial resources they have but if I were them I would have moved the bar to the back wall, knocked the walls out and improved the flow. 6-8 weeks sounds more cosmetic.

You're too young to have experienced it db but Maggies used to have bands in that back room in the 80's, 90's and even early 2000's.

A somewhat popular South City restaurant is plotting a relocation to Downtown, possibly to a prominent location on Tucker.

I think they'd do great there. They're optimistic.

I will spill more when I can.

Someone taking the leap on the Maurizio's Pizza spot? Good. I wish them the best.

^ My initial reaction was "MoBar", but that would be a contender as well.  With the hot node being around Square et al, I imagined something further north than Maurizios.

I can confirm that they are in negotiations for one of these three spots.

It's really sad to see all these old south grand establishments closed I guess change is inevitable but I really love some of the pockets of classic Americana main street along grand like Orpheum Cleaners, and the one pharmacy.

As a former regular of City Diner, I think its best days had long since passed. They got rid of most of the menu, were often understaffed even before the pandemic, hours were cut way back, it just wasn't the same. Feels like they're putting them out of their misery tbh.

^ Unfortunately, I have to agree with that sentiment.  I used to live in the Shaw neighborhood about 10 years ago, and I'd find myself there late night fairly often.  I dropped in a couple of times recently and it just wasn't the same.  Hopefully this spot doesn't remain vacant too long.

I didn't realize City Diner opened in 1992. I moved to the city in 2002 and lived on Shaw. Then it was South City Diner and I thought it was recently opened then. I agree with others that it's been an afterthought for me the last few years.

Rooster is obviously the go to breakfast place on South Grand now but I do have more of a soft spot for old school diners over trendy brunch places.

I remember 1994/95ish the Medicine Shoppe was an internet cafe. I'd go to City Diner for dinner then head over there to nerd out.

Happy Joes on Watson in Marlborough is closing tomorrow. Many fond memories going there as a kid. There really needs to be an effort to develop a more sustainable vision for Watson, as with recent closures it has gotten even bleaker.

What's the best and cheapest local pizza place in South City along the I-55 corridor?

Montebello Pizza.

^Man, if that's inside of city limits it's not by much. The front wall maybe. That said . . . I'll have to check it out. The Cecile W's on Grand is fine and the prices are reasonable. I've had some good experiences at the Original Crusoe's, if that's close enough to 55 to count. (Not quite sure how strictly to define "55 corridor.") Cafe Piazza seemed pretty good when I ate there for the first time last fall. (I've been meaning to go back, but I keep getting distracted and my wife doesn't ever want pizza, so it's typically kind of a special event with other friends.)

The Cecil's on S. Grand is above average for the chain. They seem to be more generous on their cheese and sauce.

I miss Feraros Pizza on Ivory: but they were pricey.

Damn, that's unfortunate. Not really willing to make the drive out to St. Peter's for it :/

I believe Happy Joe's as a whole is working on growing their brand/footprint, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are more in the metro not too far into the future.

Yeah true, they have been making inroads even into Egypt as of late. Hopefully it means we get another (or more!) back in the heart of the metro.

I heard the London Tea Room will be closing in a few weeks. Supposedly they are moving to a prominent spot on Locust in downtown west and tweaking their concept a bit. Until then you can still shop their online presence.

If they're moving by the stadium and expanding their English eats, that would be flipping incredible.

Tough loss for Tower Grove South and that Morganford stretch, though.
