Schlafly has always been a supporter of the Louligans so having the tailgate/pregame there is a natural fit. As a Louligan, given the pregame drinking and the general fitness level of the average Louligan, the march from Schlafly is plenty. But alternatives as long as a march from the Arch to the stadium have been suggested. A lot will depend on what, if any, other supporters' groups are founded between now and 2023. It would be great to have groups from all over downtown converging on the stadium. If anyone would like to find out more about the Louligans and soccer fans in general in St. Louis, there is an event Saturday, October 16 at 6 pm at 2nd Shift Brewery (1601 Sublette Ave #2, St. Louis, MO 63110).
^ it would be so much better without a seven-lane stroad down the middle. plenty of room for a planted median, two lanes of traffic in each direction, and separated bikes lanes on both sides.
^ I know west of the stadium GRG has plans already in design for a large greenway along Market that will do largely what you say. My guess is that will eventually come to the stretch of Market between the stadium and the Arch as I think GRG eventually has plans to continue that "hallway" between Compton and the Arch.
Regarding the bar conversation...I'd love to see Amsterdam Tavern open a satellite location near the stadium.
The ownership group, consisting of Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s Taylor family and World Wide Technology CEO Jim Kavanaugh, want the stadium, at North 20th and Market streets, to lure foot traffic with concerts and other community events when it opens for the 2023 season.
Nothing says luring foot traffic like a parking garage. /s
I also think it’s pretty dumb they at least wouldn’t build this thing with the ability to put something on top in the future.
There's nothing new that wasn't already implied in the last release. And yes, "pop-up retail" means it'll only be open when there's something going on in the surrounding blocks, so just a glorified fan apparel and souvenir booth.
And I still don't understand why it's only four levels.
^Think the press release is just to get more attention on themselves as they keep building. You know, to keep public interests in soccer growing as we're between baseball and hockey seasons. I'd bet it's only 4 stories so the damn thing's not taller than the stadium, literally so the garage doesn't overshadow it. Damn thing really should've been under the practice fields south of Market.
"officials say." "preservationists support." journalism has become making sh*t up and hoping that people don't notice you have no sources. there's no way to spin the demo of 1900 Olive and this f*cking garage that makes the ownership not look like lying *ssholes.
^ Agreed, but they got quotes from a significant preservationist for this. Maybe they’re false, and if they are I suspect Mr. Weil could sue the PD. But I have a sneaking suspicion Landmarks caved.
“In the grand scheme of things, this development ... is already having a major positive impact for the future of Union Station and many other currently vacant historic buildings,” Weil said in an email. “We applaud its ownership group for choosing to make such a significant investment in downtown St. Louis.”

I can't believe anyone with the team is so tone deaf that they could imagine that a reminder that they demolished several buildings to put up a bland parking garage would somehow promote interest in, well...anything.
And if they are concerned about nearby buildings overshadowing their shiny, new stadium, that really does not bode well for future development.

^^ It does promote interest though. For people like us here these articles don’t do that. For people that care about urban design, preservation, the built environment, etc. there’s nothing here for any of us.
But for the VAST majority of metro St. Louis residents…this is what progress looks like. I’ve seen this shared on Facebook on KMOX, the PD, the BJ, KSDK, etc. Based on the reactions, people love it. We hate it, rightfully so…because we understand what additional parking garages mean for the city. But to your average suburban St. Louis rube…this is “progress” and that drives clicks. Hence all the interest.
I’m honestly not even upset about a parking garage. What pisses me off is that permanent retail doesn’t wrap around the 20th and Olive Street sides plus the ability to build an office or hotel or residential tower on top.
Why not plan for the future with something like that? This is basically a slightly smaller, better and more dressed up Stadium East garage. And that’s not a good thing.

not saying Weil didn't say that, but Weil does not speak for "preservationists", and that's how this garbage fluff piece presents it.
