Hmmm. Who would that have been? Hmmm.

Point being that it was (and occasionally continues to be) extremely fashionable among the local "visionary" crowd to embrace the local "creative class" as a key to attracting and retaining the best and the brightest, etc. etc.

Yet I'm pretty sure precisely one news report about the project cited the logo designer's name, and that was a blog item peripheral to the main story.

It turns out that even when you're a Member of the Club, you still don't get your creative props. (Answer: Buck Smith, Fleishman Hillard.)
If you know Mr. Smith, congratulate him on a job well done. Other designers I've talked to about the logo really like it as well.

Peabody Opera House sounds fine to me. Maybe it's because I'm not a native, but Peabody doesn't scream SELLOUT to me like Verizon Wireless Amphitheater does. I agree that people will continue to call it Kiel, though.

I like the name "Unlimited Talk Plans at Verizon for $69.99 Opera House" just fine... only thing that matters is that it opens as planned and it holds true to its fine arts heritage.

"Peabody" is a classic, old-money sounding name. I just hope they don't rename it every five years.

Agreed; the logo is awesome.

Yeah, I was hoping nobody would make that connection. I'm thinking more like the Peabody Museum.

Looks like they got your memo down the hall. Today's Go section had a short feature on the logo, including designer credits.

Someboday here also got the Mr. Peabody reference. :D

The thing in Go! was a pickup of the one article online that actually referenced the designer's name.

The Kiel Auditorium was torn down for Kiel Center and now the Opera House is named after the Auditorium but now officially the Peabody?

I was fortunate enough to tour the Kiel recently.

I think the last time I was inside was during grade school when they bused us all down from St. Peters for something.

Anyway, all the pics are here

Thanks.

There were a lot more photos, and while the Kiel is in good shape, there was some damage...but thankfully it will not be allowed to deteriorate further. The Scottrade Center is rather unceremoniously connected to the Opera house in a dressing room, among other places.

this is really a great building.

Last time I was in the Opera House was at a J.D.Blackfoot show back in the late '70s. Next time I go, I'll be able to appreciate it more, being all grown up and mature (and a bit more sober).

Thanks for sharing - fantastic pics!

It never ceases to amaze me that someone would think 'These ceilings are way to high and too ornate. You know what would look good in here? Drop tiles!' :? I'm happy to see that they at least didn't destroy the original ceilings...

Fire breaks out at Peabody Opera House
St. Louis Business Journal

A small fire broke out Thursday morning at Peabody Opera House, formerly Kiel Opera House, which is undergoing a $78.7 million restoration.

The blaze started when welders were working on the renovation of the historic opera house, said Capt. Michael Pickett, a spokesman for the St. Louis Fire Department.

The fire was extinguished within minutes of firefighters’ arrival, he said.
