Does he have some sort of financial obligation to the project? It would sure seem this way. Otherwise I have no idea why someone would post the crap he does.
I'd doubt he has enough private capital to be directly involved in any of this in a tangible, credible financial way.

Odds are, this is being done for the same reasons those sad teenage girls cut their wrists: cries for attention, some satisfaction of self-control & self-determination, feelings of social isolation & not feeling like they are loved, and possibly wanting that vampire guy from Twilight to rescue them.

I think you need to post that in response to one of his STLToday rants.

I can't believe it. People whine and moan constantly on this forum that people don't give a crap about this city's landmarks and architecture, and here's a guy who is passionate about the Kiel and is its biggest cheerleader and this is the kind of support he gets? So he doesn't go about it the way that you would - if you ever would - but at least he's putting himself out there. Just thinking "gee, I'd like to see the Kiel saved" doesn't do the city or the Kiel any good, it just makes you feel better about your urbanist bonafides. If you have such disdain for crazy people, please heap it on someone who really has it coming, such as the wacknut that dragged down the Avalon.

Clearly you have not read as many of his posts as I have then. If you had, you would see he is far from a chearleader of St. Louis and instead is a cheerleader of this one project and frequently complains about other positive projects that are moving ahead with the Kiel renovation not. That doesn't sound like someone looking out for the best for St. Louis, but instead the best for himself.

Clearly you have not read my post as I have written it then. If you had, you would see that I said he is a cheerleader for this project and didn't even mention St. Louis. Further, how does being a one-project booster translate into someone looking out for the best for himself? If he is financially tied to the Kiel, then I would be shocked if he wasn't a booster. I could care less that he frequently complains about other projects you think are positive. I see the same thing on these boards every day, people arguing pro and con over certain projects and developments.

On Golterman, whoever this guy is:

He’s the fat guy at the Rams game, drunk and shirtless with black & yellow war paint across his chest. He has fake dreadlocks and JACKSON across his back, mimicking the RB’s jersey, and he’s loud with his cheers throughout the game. Those wearing Packers jerseys nearby shy away for fear of his wrath, which even the Rams fans nearby are hoping he doesn’t unleash. Yes, he’s a cheerleader, and I’m glad he’s for the Rams as opposed to the Packers or whatever other team there is. Plus, he’s a character, and characters are what make this world fun and interesting for all of us collective individuals.

However, if he ever says that he could seriously do better than the athletes on the field at propelling the running game, you call him an arrogant simpleton, as that’s what he’s being. Or, more commonly, a drunk jack*ss. And, he makes dedicated Rams fans look bad.

What if this guy then said the Rams were being run conspiratorially by the Cardinals to throw games, so StL can only have one quality pro sports team, and for that the management is intentionally losing? You’d call him a crackpot. Sure, he still has the paint and the fanaticism for the team, but he’s clearly out to lunch. You can say he’s a fan, but you must also say he’s a stain and an exceptional annoyance. You can’t enjoy the game because he’s drunk and smells like old cheese from five rows away; who wants to hear his conspiracy rants now?

When you see him shirtless, loud, & obnoxious, standing outside of Busch Stadium wearing a placard claiming cross-town conspiracy, you’ll see him in a comparable light. Asking for a $400M lawsuit is fanaticism taken too far.

Focus: Kiel being rebuilt is a good thing, and I hope it happens soon.

Kiel deal is close, Checketts says
By David Nicklaus
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts says he remains committed to, and optimistic about, a renovation of the Kiel Opera House. Speaking at a Regional Chamber and Growth Association breakfast today, Checketts said:

I keep thinking we’re at the finish line, and if we had had some better options in the credit market we would be there. We’re getting close; I know I’ve said that before. … I haven’t lost the passion to do it.
Checketts said today that the problem is in lining up senior bank loans. He said SCP had revised the deal “about a hundred times” in an attempt to satisfy the banks, but without success so far. Underwriters remain confident that they can sell the bond portion of the financing, Checketts said.

Good to hear there is actually something still in the works here. It's just plain stupid to have a beautiful building like this sit empty.

OK, I'm going slightly off-topic for the Kiel, but I feel compelled to amend my critiques of Ed Golterman.

Recently, I've come to meet him in a social setting, and I've got to say he's not as screwed up as my previous assumptions made him out to be. He's actually a rather smart and kind guy who's truly interested in what's best for Downtown and thorugh it Saint Louis as a metro area. He's in his late 60s / early 70s, intelligent, reasonably accomplished, volunteers for social groups, and really means well. And none of us can disagree with his contentions that a strong arts program in a revitalized Kiel Auditorium would be nothing but a boom to the region, both for economic benefits and for social betterment, as well as the continued growth of Downtown StL. What prompts me to write this is seeing him at last night's introduction of candidates for the Arch Grounds 2015 rework; he was outside the Orpheum, walking around with a large photo of the Kiel in his hands, trying to press for its full redevelopment as a Downtown institution.

I still think he's a loon with his over-dedication to a project already in the works, with clear progress coming along and market dynamics going to make it work without his constant ultra-grassroots advocacy. Same time, he's no longer posting every day on the StLToday website about Kiel, so maybe he's learning how to better present his ideas so they can be taken in without people thinking he's just some whack job seeking attention or with some weird ulterior motives to the Kiel.

My rips into him have been excessive, and I mean to make right here. As an individual, he's actually a good and decent man. And so long as he pares down on his guerilla advocacies, I support his contentions.

Same time, you sure won't see me marching around with a poster of Kiel before every civil meeting. Ed, if you're reading this, have you ever talked to Dave Checketts? I'm sure he'd be open to meeting you in a calm and reasonably dispassionate setting. I'm sure you'll see the progress you're ultimately seeking currently underway. Try writing a calm letter to him. Who knows, you two could become friends, even go see Blues games together. Couldn't hurt... I think.

Was he the guy wearing a red t-shirt with all sorts of writing on it? He wouldn't stand still long enough for me to read it.

In today's BJ
SCP Worldwide is working on securing financing for its $74 million plan to reopen Kiel Opera House, at 1400 Market St. The developers’ inability to secure financing for the project has delayed its planned opening from this year to a new target opening in spring 2011.

As for Ed, yeah. I've met him a few times. And as unhinged as he comes off in online comment boards, he's quite courteous and pleasant to talk with.

On the agenda of the St. Louis Land Clearance for Redevelopment Authority meeting today is an item to authorize up to $36 million in bonds for the project, which has been stalled at the financing stage since last summer, when Aldermen OK’d a $74 million redevelopment plan by Blues owner David Checketts.

Both the city and Checketts’ SCP Worldwide described today’s vote as more procedural than anything else, essentially crossing t’s and dotting i’s. But it’s another small step forward, and the latest sign of life in the project.

Nice article on the financing of the Kiel Opera house in St. Louis Business Journals paper edition that came out today. I believe the full story will be available online on Monday unless you got the subscription. Lays out how it is going to be financed by who and when. Sounds like it is getting ever closer

From today's Biz Journal:

Stage is set for rehab of Kiel Opera House
St. Louis Business Journal - by Christopher Tritto

After years of fits and starts, the long-awaited rehabilitation of the Kiel Opera House is finally poised to begin. The city of St. Louis sold its $32.6 million in bonds to help finance renovations to the historic building adjoining the Scottrade Center arena, and redevelopment partners SCP Worldwide and brothers Chris and Joe McKee are more than doubling their equity investment to get the deal done.

All the financial components of the $78.7 million project — both public and private — are now in place, and the money pledged is scheduled to be wired on the deal’s closing date of June 29. The arrival of construction crews should quickly follow.
