Stage is set for rehab of Kiel Opera House
St. Louis Business Journal - by Christopher Tritto

After years of fits and starts, the long-awaited rehabilitation of the Kiel Opera House is finally poised to begin. The city of St. Louis sold its $32.6 million in bonds to help finance renovations to the historic building adjoining the Scottrade Center arena, and redevelopment partners SCP Worldwide and brothers Chris and Joe McKee are more than doubling their equity investment to get the deal done.

All the financial components of the $78.7 million project — both public and private — are now in place, and the money pledged is scheduled to be wired on the deal’s closing date of June 29. The arrival of construction crews should quickly follow.
Bravo!

Now that this has apparent financing and will move forward, hopefully the building across 14th will be able to pick up some tenants and fill out as well.

On a side note, what the heck is Ed Golterman going to do with his time now that he doesn't have to respond to EVERY downtown news with how having a renovated Kiel will "save" the city?

In addition to immediate jobs for the crafts and suppliers, Kiel 'stimulates' the neighborhood-
and puts something 'big and known' in the kit bag of those with the responsibility of drawing people to St. Louis, or back to St. Louis.

I'm glad to see that Mr. Goltermann sees the news about the KOH as a great step in the right direction. There were times when his obsession with the place and his oft-negative tone got old, but I think his heart was always in the right place.

Already asked him. Now we'll be incessantly hearing about the underutilization of the MUNY.

I was sincerely hoping that he would try and get the Wendy's re-opened. St. Louis is falling seriously behind other cities in this regard!

They have construction fences up. There looked to be a good dozen or so workers in yellow vests and hardhats setting stuff up.

This....

ST. LOUIS • The quest to save the Kiel Opera House is most likely over, but Ed Golterman is still fighting.
Golterman, who spent more than a decade working to bring the dormant downtown structure back to life, walked about five miles from the Muny to the Kiel Opera House on Sunday afternoon—a stunt to highlight the Muny's four-day closure over the holiday weekend.

Why on earth does he care that the Muny is closed for 4 days?

This is why I'm (kind of) glad I don't have money. Sounds like something I would do.

oh of course, natives will always call it the Kiel Opera.

same way it's still the TWA Dome, Famous Barr, the Kiel Center, the Riverport Amphitheater, Stix Baer and Fuller...

okay, maybe not that last one

I like the logo and I am glad someone stepped up and supported the arts.

There is lots of people complaining on STLTODAY and even on DTSLP facebook, but the fact is that this thing is under construction. From Mayor Slay:

"The name of the new venue is the Peabody Opera House at The Henry W. Kiel Auditorium. #fgs about 3 hours ago"

Since the city gave Peabody millions in tax breaks just to stay put, it's the least they can do.

The logo is fantastic. Major props to the designer.

Hmmm. Who would that have been? Hmmm.

Point being that it was (and occasionally continues to be) extremely fashionable among the local "visionary" crowd to embrace the local "creative class" as a key to attracting and retaining the best and the brightest, etc. etc.

Yet I'm pretty sure precisely one news report about the project cited the logo designer's name, and that was a blog item peripheral to the main story.

It turns out that even when you're a Member of the Club, you still don't get your creative props. (Answer: Buck Smith, Fleishman Hillard.)
