Great photos. Looks like it's definitely going to liven up the St. Louis skyline.

That looks really awesome! Crazy how it can look so cool at night and so bland during the day.
Now that the thing is completed, I don't think it looks that bad during the day, at least from a distance.
I actually never thought it looked THAT bad during the day, other than brownish-orange is my least favorite color for bricks, and they matched that color to the building and Jones dome. I just liked the idea of criticizing the 'great brown streak'.
But in any case, the illumination far excees my 'coolness' expectations -- I expected it to look pretty lame.

If they leave the LED display on during the day, the blandness of the brown streak may not be a problem. LED displays can be pretty freaking bright.
I saw this lit up for the opening in February. Now this is an LED lighting display!
The videos really don't do justice to the scale of this thing, but in the second video, those tiny little things buzzing around in front of the display...are busses. The tiny Grand Lisboa sign in front in the last video...is actually about 8 stories tall. And, at 620', this display is roughly as wide as the Union Station train shed is long. Theoretically, the great brown combed-over streak should be able to do some of this, not words or images obviously, but maybe some of the shifting light and color variations.

I don't know, frankly, after the first few billion colors or so, they all start to look the same to me.

The egg-shaped podium, which measures 56 meters (184 feet) high and 189 meters (620 feet) wide with an area of approximately 10,609 square meters, is completely lit up using over 59,000 ProPixel® LED lighting elements from Daktronics.

In the morning sun today you can see that it's definately some type of membrane. It's wrinkled and crinkled in no particular pattern.
Good point Jax. I thought about that, but since it is backlit and not a direct LED display, I just can't see it being all that bright, except maybe on a cloudy day. I'm sure you would definitely be able to notice colors in the daytime, but I don't think the white light will be able to overcome the brown streak, at least, not without coming off as dirty-white. We'll see.Jax wrote:If they leave the LED display on during the day, the blandness of the brown streak may not be a problem. LED displays can be pretty freaking bright.
I think the webcam is history. They probably moved it to complete the tuckpointing of the Embassy Suites.
BTW, I was watching this video of the Grand Lisboa display again, and about 1 minute into the video the LED display goes dark, so you can see what the surface looks like. It looks dark metallic or mirrored depending on the angle to the viewer. I think something like this might have looked pretty damned good on the combed-over streak and could have complemented the Arch rather well. I just don't get why they went with brown. I can only assume they were trying to complement all of the varying brick shades on the project, on the Dome, and in Laclede's Landing; that, and of course it will be easier to maintain - no warshing necessary.

There was a program on channel 10 tonight with a rep from Lumiere Place discussing the new hotel/casino. He mentioned there will be a tunnel connecting the hotel/casino to the stadium area and it will have a moveable walkway to speed up the walk. He also showed a rendering of the hotel and what is now brown showed up as green in the rendering. It looked great and I still believe that will be the final color. If other parts of the surrounding buildings are being painted brown to blend in with the the area, I don't necessarily believe the brown portion of the hotel will remain that way.

Great. So the fat hoosiers going to the casino can avoid getting any exercise whatsoever.

That's harsh. I think they're just trying to make it as accessable as possible to everyone and the walkway will provide a safe and efficient way of getting there. It brings their venue closer to the rest of downtown. I think it's a great idea that solves several problems, but if you want to rough it, go right ahead. I'm not stopping you!

Funny, I've been calling the 'comb over' a 'mohawk'... now it's definitely a 'glowhawk'. Glad the profile kinda matches the arches north leg... wish it did something different on the top, maybe it's supposed to compliment the dome?
Channel 10 huh? I don't get that one. Is that from Macomb? Or is that one of those channels you only get when you tilt your aluminum foil hat slightly to the right?
Channel 10 is the city's TV station. It's on Charter, and only in the city proper. http://www.stltv.net/
OK, so I should have said it is one of those channels you only get when you tilt your aluminum foil hat slightly to the left?
But, are you absolutely sure we aren't talking about the Macomb-Mabrush bi-city metroplex superstation?
BTW, I don't have cable, I live in the 21st century. Weird that we can communicate though, huh? Its kind of like that movie...

I imagine the conveyor is also to make it more difficult for people to loiter in the tunnel.

^ That's a great point - but I imagine there will be a place to walk as well? Maybe not. Exactly where is this thing surfacing west of I-70 again?

In the southwest corner of Baer park between the dome and I-70.

Also on KSDK.com I saw this morning that they delaying the Lemay project so they can finish Lumiere. According to what I read the Lemay casino may not be open until 2009.

It's unfortunate news for Lemay, where people are looking forward to the jobs and additional investment the River City Casino will bring.
Pinnacle's gotta do what they've gotta do though, and right now it means diverting resources from Lemay to get Lumiere Place up and running ASAP. Their track record is good, though, so I think the Lemay project will be just fine even though it's going to take longer than people there initially thought.
