No, they were working on it in 2005 and 2006, doing significant stabilization work and roofing at least one of the buildings. I don't think it was that one, but I was under the impression, at least at that time, that none of those buildings were in that bad of shape.

I think that's an old photo.

Street view appears to be in the process of updating. If you spin some of the images you will get an old view, and it is only updated up to St. Louis Ave, allowing a partial view of the 14th St. Mall construction. You can also play around with it and go from OPO plaza construction to Garage Mahal construction. With a few minutes tomorrow I will be able to date the new images to within a pretty close time frame based on my pics of various locations. They are around a year old at this point.

I believe the link with the picture of the damaged roof is around 1 year old.

The sidewalk across the street on S Broadway is new as of last year and the cut outs for the trees look empty, I think the trees were planted last Spring.

Also, a little bit North of 55 the crews were out removing the patch of trees near the Broadway off-ramp. This also happened around a year ago. Anyone know why this area was cleared? Still doesn't look like anything was done with it.

This is really cool. Could the historic Lemp brewery site be be re-birthed as a techie playground?

Group hopes to create hackerspace for St. Louis techies

By Evan S. Benn

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

11/28/2009

"The thing about St. Louis' tech community is that there are a lot of us, but we tend to be pretty cliquish," said Dave Mestel, a systems analyst who dabbles in costume design. "Part of what we're trying to do is bring those cliques together and show other people what we can do."

They've already written bylaws, filled out paperwork to become a nonprofit and rented a 1,200-square-foot loft space on the second floor of the Lemp building that also houses a recording studio and band practice rooms. They hope to move in next month and have Arch Reactor in shape for an open house in January.

Does anyone know who owns the Lemp complex now? Assessors DB says Historic Lemp Brewery LLC which is pretty meaningless. I remember that Jacob Development (I thought) had it under contract back in 2007, but am not sure if they bought it or not. Previous (possibly still) owners were Shashi and Rao Palamand.

Still the Palamands. They have newish leasing signs on every side of the complex if you are looking for their contact number. Sadly, with the recession ongoing, I think its pretty safe to say that nothing is going to be happening at this site for a few years at least.

Schlafyl Ramps Up Beer Production
by Evan S. Benn
St. Louis Post Dispatch

Having reached capacity at their two St. Louis brewing facilities, the makers of Schlafly beer are finalizing arrangements to expand production through deals with two out-of-state breweries...

The brewery has reached its production ceiling in St. Louis...

"In the long term, we're committed to making all the beer that we sell in St. Louis in St. Louis," Kopman said. "We just need some breathing room right now."

Perhaps Schlafly should take over the old Lemp Brewery. They are looking to expand, and this would further ingratiate them in the hearts of St. Louisans (not that they haven't already achieved that). I'm sure everything on the site is completely outdated, and the expenses would be hard to justify compared to an operation like the Bottleworks. But it would be a direct affront to ABInbev, and with the weekly layoff press releases still rolling out, I think St. Louis would take rather kindly to that. It would certainly make for a great David vs. Goliath story, and a great tenant of South St. Louis.

That would be great... but not likely.
In response to a few comments, we will make use of our capacity at Bottleworks for all beer styles in bottles and kegs before we will shift any brewing to Point or Latrobe and if and when we do so we are confident in our ability to brew at either with the malt, hops and yeast that we purchase for use in StL. We are paying as much or more than we have ever done for great raw materials from the US, UK and Europe. We have invested over $3 million over the past 3 years to expand capacity at Bottleworks and we want to make full use of that investment. We want to brew as much beer as we can right here. We opened the Bottleworks Brewery in late 2003; we started purchasing equipment in 1999; we purchased the property in late 2001. We have spent considerable time looking at the potential for a 3rd site. We do not own any property to build on and based on projects completed by other brewers in the past few years it was clear that from looking for a site to finish could take 5 years and upwards of $25 million. As a Company with $12 million in current revenue that would be a tough bank loan to get in the current banking environment and depending on where our growth rate ends up might put at risk the Company and the jobs we have built over the last 20 years. We have all watched individuals and companies borrow money they really could not afford. There is no need to repeat the same mistakes; if StL beer drinkers demand more Schlafly Beer than our capacity at Bottleworks and The Schlafly Tap Room can supply I am certain we will eventually figure out how to brew this in StL. Thanks to so many in StL who have supported Schlafly Beer since 1991.

^Agreed. Nice to see they are least paying lip service to staying local. Most companies won't even do that. The one thing I really take away from his message though, is that the Lemp Complex would not be an option for them. At least by themselves. The current owners of Lemp have been adamant about not developing the site piecemeal. Unless they change their mind or Schlafly partners up with someone else, the scale of the project would simply be too big.

Anyone know anything about the Brewery Museum at the Lemp complex? According to the article and website, they are leasing 3 floors at the complex. It appears as if this group is trying to raise money for the museum. The president is heavily involved in various beer collectable groups including the Beer Can Collectors of America. The VP of the group is one of the authors of 'St. Louis Brews'. I am not sure if their ambitions are on hold, along with the economy or if they are still raising money. It would be a great addition to St. Louis and a great way to honor the amazing brewing history of our town. I am going to do some digging and see if I can find out more.

Looking at the pages copyright dates, I would say that while the idea is fantastic and I would love to see this kind of development go on at Lemp, they may have just thrown an idea out there without any solid means to go ahead. Old news, besically.

^I actually chatted with a guy that was involved in the situation early on and decided not to be a part of it. He said that the group was very disorganized and did not have the vision or intestinal fortitude to move the idea forward. I know that Dan Rousin, one of the authors of 'St. Louis Brews' is heavily involved. I've met the guy, super nice guy. To me, he just doesn't come off as a savy business man. Then again, what do I know. I hope he and the others can get it done at some point. Now that the owners are marketing the place as a business park, the possibility of a mixed-use or entertainment facility seems like a long shot. Then again, the owner may be filling a void, while the economy is slow. At some point, I am sure, if sold, would be used for something other than a business park. I wouldn't mind offices, but not light industrial. If light industrial, there will be little motiviation to rehab the complex. It will stay as is. It has SO MUCH more potential, most of which is wasted at the moment.

I just saw that Scarefest is opening a haunted house at the Lemp Brewery in late September. Anyone have anymore information about this?

This is what the website says:

Saturday, August 21, 2010 12:29 AM
Lemp Brewery Haunted House Coming Soon
There will be a new haunted house opening in the St. Louis area for 2010... Lemp Brewery Haunted House. Prepare to go deep underground and explore the caves and caverns underneath the Lemp Brewery. More details coming soon. Opening late September 2010. Scarefest will start taking applications for monsters and more within the next week.

This sounds awesome! At least it is being put to some use, although it is cheap thrills vs. real development.

Sounds cool.

Who knows? Maybe this will spur some interest in renovations, or at least help the owners get money to start renovations.

It's better than it just sitting there unused.

^^I am sure that the 'real' caves will not be open to the public. I think they are taking people into a warehouse, not sure how many floors down, maybe into the 'unnatural parts' of the cave, but not the actual caves. Those would be far too dangerous for crowds getting spooked. I would hate to see the 'natural caves' used for something of that nature. The way they are advertising, you'd think they were offering real cave experience.

Someone on another forum told me that an episode of Ghost Hunters has been filmed at the Lemp Mansion this year. Should be interesting.

I realize the Mansion is different than the Brewery, but I thought I would post that info here, anyway.

There's a post about it here, for some reason

I believe the show is being aired 9/29/10 on the Syfy channel.

I am hoping the show 'Ghost Adventures' comes to the Lemp Mansion and Brewery. I know it has a cheesy feel to it, but I admit, that show is one of my gulity pleasures.

Back to this "Haunted House", looks like this will be a good opportunity for people to go into the bowels of the Lemp Brewery, not the actual caves though. Honestly, I'd much rather go in the Brewery on a historical tour, versus a haunted house. When I went into the actual caves, we didn't see much of the Brewery.

Why watch? They've never found a ghost, and I'm pretty certain never will.

Might as well watch Scooby-Doo.
