It needs investment. We as a society have intentionally dis-invested in it and N STL City and County for decades. Clear-cutting a city is never the answer. Not if we are to avoid the mistakes of our past and deepen divides that already strain our civic fabric.
i already said i was exaggerating, but ESTL has abandoned buildings for miles and virtually no police presence. those buildings provide cover for criminals. at this point ESTL can barely be considered a city. it needs investment? what kind of investment do you think it will take to turn it around in our lifetimes, and where do you think that investment will come from, not to mention the tens of thousands of people to repopulate it?

^It needs government and/or non-profits (and for-profits) to intentionally direct investment their way. That means investing in school-to-jobs pipelines as much as we invest in policing. That means providing strong after-school programs. That means investing in strong, results driven job training programs for adults. That means infrastructure improvements that aren't tied to getting people out of town as quickly as possible.
Will it look like the CWE in our lifetimes? No, and that area doesn't need massive scale gentrification.
Could we hope for stabilization on the scale of some our near-North & near-South side neighborhoods in the City? That's maybe realistic in the next 20-30 yrs.
East St. Louis needs people to not write it off, and it needs people to care enough to see the human potential over there and invest in that.

How dare KMOV focuse on crime - arguably the biggest day-to-day issue facing the City. They should focus on cute dog sweaters and the potential for snow instead.

Covering it is one thing, presenting it in a fear mongering, end of the world manner is over the top. Completely pander to advertisers and suburban base.

This is horrible. I am glad she is safe. I really hope Greitens is able to adequately address the crime problem in the city.

The only possibility I see for this happening is if Greitens is secretly some sort of combination of Jesus, a jedi and a magician and also doesn't care about completely p*ssing off his party and backers. Personally, I see zero chance for any of these things, but hey, I've been wrong before.

I say more likely he and the family moves to Town and Country. ...Jus' calling em like I see em...

I would say based on his press conference, he actually addressed it well overall but the question is what exactly is going to change with crime in the city. Person crimes are up such as robberies, assault and rape while property crimes are down overall. Homicide is going to be close. Currently at 175, so 14 more and we exceed last year which is pretty sad. December 2015 there were 8 that month while December 2014 there 21

Based on his campaign rhetoric he'll probably declare martial law.

^^^ Just for the record, I want to apologize for the negativity and sarcasm of my previous post. Just frustrated by the crime, poverty and division there is in the metro and state and how much potential the city of Saint Louis has.

Even if I don't agree with his politics, It's cool having a governor who chose to live in the CWE and hope to see him and our other leaders help make Saint Louis city, metro STL and the state of Missouri as safe and successful as possible in the coming years.

So the Riverfront Times article originally said that the Ms. Grietens robbery incident happened in the CWE but then changed it to Midtown with an editor's note.. but it happened in the Central West End (outside Cafe Ventana. Know your neighborhoods, media!

I think it is pretty clear that something has to give. St. Louis can't go on being terrorized by criminals.

Liberal policing strategies don't work in a city like St Louis. Enforce low level crimes and lock people up for serious offenses. Get people to be a witness and protect them.

Examine social programs to see if they are working and if the workers have the expertise to run them. If not, hire people that know what they are doing.

Mr. Greitens is the first Governor from St. Louis proper in a century. While his campaign was nasty and at points embarrassing, he's actually very intelligent. It's definitely a plus having a governor who understands the issues facing the city. I'm surprised how optimistic I am for his administration.

Im also eager to see the steps Greitens takes. Will his fight on crime be financially supporting city police services (city leading) or will it be far more comprehensive which might require the state to lead.

I don't really know what to expect from him. Reading up on him, he seemed to lean encouragingly toward pragmatism, and actually he originally considered running for senate as a Democrat. But I got the impression 9/11 broke his brain and turned him into a right-wing culture warrior.

Eric Greitens is a liberal who managed to con the Republican Party into nominating and electing him. I have little confidence in him, but if there is one issue where we desperately need to work together, it is crime and policing.

Whatever can be done to reduce vehicle break-ins sure goes a long way to reduce overall crime... obviously property crimes are much more frequent than violent crimes, but I wasn't quite aware of how much vehicle break-ins account for our city's crime incidents until looking it up after our Chief Resiliency Officer had his car broken into (and laptop stolen).

http://www.slmpd.org/crimestats/CRM0013-BY_201611.pdf

Larceny from motor vehicles accounts for 24% of all (Tier One) property crimes and 18% of property + violent crimes in the city through November. Larcenies as a whole approach 50% of the city's reported crimes.

Yesterday Dick Fleming tweeted a link to this video and asked if this could be a model for us. It a cutaway from a golf tournament about East Lake Purpose Built community model in Atlanta -- eight other cities are adopting this model. I had never heard of this until now.
