I couldn't find any story that explains why they dropped liquour then reconsidered a decade later.

n/m found this story in the Tribune
Walgreen Co. is in the early stages of bringing liquor back to its stores.

The Deerfield-based drugstore chain exited the liquor business in the early 1990s at most of its stores except for a few markets in the Southeast and Southwest, the company said during its fiscal third-quarter conference call with analysts Monday.

Walgreens is in the midst of applying for the local government licenses needed to reintroduce beer and wine to its national chain of more than 7,000 stores, according to company spokeswoman Tiffani Washington.

The retailer had been selling liquor since the end of Prohibition, but stopped at most of its stores more than a decade ago because of the cost of managing the business, she said. New computer systems will make it easier to manage now, Washington said.
Don't know if I buy their reasoning.

I don't know if anyone else heard this, but at the time they closed their liqour depts. I was told that the CEO's daughter had been in an accident involving a drunk driver and the unweildy/expense was the official line.

obviously heresay but wondered if anyone else had heard that.

Here's a PD article about the issue (no mention of the CEO's daughter):

http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/busine ... enDocument

The story points out that not all Walgreens will be selling liquor. Neighborhood groups will certainly have a say in it. Also, they'll only have a limited selection of wine and beer...and no 40s.

Former City Hospital site set for $22 million renovation
St. Louis Business Journal - by Lisa R. Brown

Developer Chris Goodson is finalizing financing to move forward with a $22 million expansion of the former City Hospital property south of downtown that will include 63 loft apartments, a rock climbing gym and a new restaurant.

The power plant’s tenant roster includes So iLL at the Power Plant, an indoor rock climbing gym run by brothers David and Dan Chancellor. The name is taken from the Chancellors’ DeSoto, Ill.-based rock climbing gear and equipment company, So iLL. Other partners in the gym, which will open in November, are Jim Fetterman and Ian Anderson. Peder Hulse of Green Street Realty represented So iLL in the lease.

The power plant’s 70-foot walls are an ideal fit for rock climbing walls, according to the project’s backers. “It will be one of the tallest indoor climbing walls in the country,” Dan Chancellor said.

The Chancellors are both avid rock climbers and are adding kid-friendly rock climbing boulders for new climbers.

Another tenant in the Power Plant is David Bailey, who will open a signature restaurant and event space. Bailey’s restaurant will occupy 2,100 square feet on the upper levels of the 25,000-square-foot building, with an additional 2,000 square feet of outdoor seating with roof access. Bailey also owns Baileys’ Chocolate Bar, located in Lafayette Square, as well as the Rooster restaurant and Bridge Tap House and Wine Bar, both located downtown. Another smaller dining venue at the power plant, about 1,200 square feet, is in the planning stages, but details have not been finalized. BSI is the general contractor on the power plant renovation, and CDO is the architect.

This is really great news - everything between the hospital and the Butler's Pantry facility will be rehabbed, with the farmers market taking up the big vacant lot on the northwest corner of the property. I especially love the angled building immediately adjacent to the hospital on 14th street and can't wait to see it renovated.

Being a resident of the Georgian, this is fantastic news. I think the Rock Climbing wall will definitely attract some people who wouldn't come to this area in the past. More foot traffic is a good thing!

I just hope the market comes through to connect the Georgian Complex better with Lafayette Square.

Update on the remaining City Hosptial buildings and gravel lot on STLToday.com. If all of the plans mentioned in this article happen, I will be a happy man.

In addition to the Rock Climbing gym, 2 restaurants, and apartments, the developer said he is close to closing on getting a Farmer's Market/Grocery built on the gravel lot:
He said he had agreements with 28 Missouri farmers to provide meat, produce and dairy products. He described the grocery — which could open in spring 2012 — as "a hybrid" of Soulard Market and Culinaria downtown.

When is someone going to build on the huge greenspace North of the underutilized fenced parking lot and small greenspace on the other side of Truman Parkway? I would be nice if we could make more of a neighborhood connection from Lafayette Square to Soulard.

The Farmers Market would be an excellent idea especially if it's open during the week.

It's supposed to be a second location for Sappington Farmer's Market, right?

Windows are going in on the remaining buildings.

Seems premature since there are still trees growing out of the roof and weeds surrounding the lots.

But the buildings are looking much better with windows!

Ald. Kacie Starr-Triplett tweeted this morning:

@KacieStarr: "Food hub is coming next to the Walgreens on Lafayette & Truman. Will serve as a location for residents to have fresh, local food by farmers"

I responded asking if it was to be the new Sappington Market. She responded:

@KacieStarr: "Yes. They will distribute food to school districts & have a grocery component. Also good things in process for Foodland bldg."

Yay on Foodland happenings! Hopefully we'll see more details on both of these sites soon.

Wow, this is great. Is this the Sappinton's Market that was supposed to have greenhouses/rooftop gardens? I thought this was supposed to be on the former city hospital site (now Georgian). So now it's moving across Lafayette to the Bohemian Hill area? That's still good. And any more details on the Foodland development?

^I had the same thought. I googled it and I think it's inspired by a similar concept in the Seattle area.

(Inspired? More a shameless, blatant ripoff.)

^thank you for the info! This is interesting:
The market, intended to have a 1950s retro feel, will likely be open for business by the end of 2012.

Next question, maybe a little pre-mature but why not ask.

McCormick Baron still pursuing market rate apartments as part of this mix? I believe the last renderings included such residential units. That would be icing on the cake. They have been quiet lately in the metro area and it would be nice to see the full plan come through as well as the proposed Forest Park TOD which I believe Baron was also working on.

Awww, leave 'em be. At least they didn't get the City to give them $250,000 for a "study" on how to market the place.
