Two pedestrians crashed into each other?

^ obviously should say "pedestrian struck and killed".
What's the deal with people not wearing seat belts? I can't fathom being in a vehicle without wearing one. People are so dumb.quincunx wrote: ↑Mar 22, 2025

A cyclist is dead after being struck by four(!) cars in south city

Situation seems complicated. Sounds like the cyclist crossed lanes in an unpredictable manner, likely putting themselves in danger.
Zero excuse for fleeing the scene though.
Good example of why we can't police our way out of car violence, we must design our streets to be safe and compatible for all forms of transit that would use them.
A protected (with barrier) two-way bike lane along one side of Gravois probably would have prevented this situation but alas, we put parking over people.

^Gravois really needs a road diet there and most other places, but it'll be an especially hard one to do since it's a state highway. I really regret the city handing control of state highways back over in exchange for passing off a few miles of road maintenance. I'm just beyond tired of hearing about people getting hit crossing that thing. I'd gladly sacrifice all the parking along Gravois for two good protected bike lanes and a center median big enough to serve as a pedestrian refuge. And restore the tree lawn with larger shade species. That street has become so very bleak. I swear, it wasn't always that way, but man, it's been awful so long now . . .

I don't know what "we can't police our way out of car violence" means..
I'd sure like to see better street design AND criminal consequence for those who drive recklessly.

It means we'll never have enough police to keep an eye on every driver, everywhere, all the time.
Infrastructure is on duty 24/7. So are red light and speed cameras. So are speed governors and license, insurance and registration verification in cars.

What I would like to know is, just what the hell happened to the proposed road diet plan they had for Gravois...there was a whole outline done with renders and everything. Did it just die on the vine?Auggie wrote: ↑Apr 02, 2025Situation seems complicated. Sounds like the cyclist crossed lanes in an unpredictable manner, likely putting themselves in danger.

I think they pretty much executed this MODOT plan. Made Gravois significantly better than it was, but it's still not close to an acceptable state.
Gravois should be a lane in each direction with a center turn lane south of 55. Similar to how it narrows down in Bevo. There should also be well protected bike lanes on each side, because it's actually one of the more efficient cycling routes in the city. Not many people use it at all today because the current setup is still wildly dangerous (AKA what just happened)
It's MODOT though, so don't get your hopes up

It means police can't stop a bike rider from putting themselves in danger by turning across the street in an unpredictable way. But road design could have.Baltimore Jack wrote: ↑Apr 03, 2025I don't know what "we can't police our way out of car violence" means..

One of the reasons Gravois is so wide is that at one point In the not so distant past it had a reversible lane, eastbound in the morning and westbound in the afternoon. I'm assuming the building of the highways eventually made it obsolete.

Someone wrecked a car into the utility pole at Chouteau and Tucker Saturday night.
Ever since the traffic lights are completely out there. Not flashing. Completely out. Since Saturday night.
A major intersection between Dowhtown and Soulard just has completely dead lights. For almost two days.
Think about that when you vote.

Yeah, that's bad, but I assume they put out those temporary stop signs in the meanwhile?
Leaving the scene was obviously a big "no no", but what kind of punishment is expected given that it sounds like the bicyclist may have been at fault?leeharveyawesome wrote: ↑Apr 07, 2025Woman charged in death of bicyclist on Gravois.

Up to 7 years in prison, up to a $10k fine. She also intentionally lied to the police.Tim wrote: ↑Apr 07, 2025Leaving the scene was obviously a big "no no", but what kind of punishment is expected given that it sounds like the bicyclist may have been at fault?leeharveyawesome wrote: ↑Apr 07, 2025Woman charged in death of bicyclist on Gravois.

I think a couple years probation would be the most fair.

Didn't she tell the police that she was nowhere near the accident? I feel like that's the biggest no-no she committed.
