They must have been driving incredibly fast to hit that building. RIP. Thank goodness there wasn't anyone hit.

If only we had the technology to prevent cars from exceeding the speed limit. Or at least the max speed limit anywhere.

They had to have been going at least 70-80 mph to get that much air.

I kind of have a heavy foot.  Or so I thought.  This week I saw a few things that make me wonder if I do.   Driving down south Grand just past Meremac and I see a car parked facing south with its rear end shredded, then I see its front end also wrecked as it was pushed into the car in front of it.  Guessing it was a hit and run that cascaded to the car in front.  Than later I saw a Corvette off the shoulder on 55 South.  And there was one more that escapes my detail   Wow, driving 25 minutes south and see all this.   Again, I think I drive fast.

^There is a constant stream of wrecks on the side of Grand. And you get passed on all sides. People run lights. They run signs. They're in a hurry and a half. At the moment I think I'm listening to some illegal street racing, maybe out on 55. Every weekend you hear this foolishness. And the wrecks will sit on grand for weeks before anyone cleans them up.

Literally (like 8:15 AM this morning, just two minutes ago) just saw a car going 55+ down Folsom, blowing through the stop sign at Thurman.  No plates either.  So it's not just downtown St. Louis where this is an issue.  The region as a whole feels like the wild west when it comes to basic traffic laws.

Noticed the same thing driving around this weekend. I've driven all over this city for years and while it's not uncommon to see traffic violations this weekend there was a marked increase in both number and egregiousness. It's not just downtown.

A few (though not all) examples I saw just yesterday: I passed by the same accident aftermath on South Grand mentioned above, and watched drivers pass other (already speeding) drivers in the middle turn lane. Saw someone turn left in front of oncoming traffic causing a panic brake event, and saw multiple folks running red lights at multiple intersections on Gravois.  Watched a Camaro fly down Michigan in Carondelet (easily 50+ MPH), cross over into the oncoming lane... and park in the middle of the NB lane in front of me.  Guy just left his car there, got out, and walked up to a house. I had to stop for him, then cross over into the oncoming lane to go around his car.

The million dollar question:  how is this fixed?  I highly doubt police are going to just start cracking down on these types of behaviors. And infrastructure changes would take years to implement (at least on any level that would force people to alter habits).  Are red light and speed cameras an option if they can capture pictures of drivers?  Are there other enforcement agencies that can focus on expired temporary plates / non plate vehicles?

I'm sure we've all noticed the increase in speeding and ignoring traffic rules since covid started. Not that city police ever did much of any traffic patrolling before. I take 70 for my commute and noticed the state troopers are back this morning. People cruise 15-20 over which isn't that bad really but the not stopping at lights and stop signs, going the wrong way doing 1 ways, passing by using oncoming traffic lanes is crazy. After every weekend I see a bunch of fresh new debris on the road. Is there some sort of policy by the PD to not enforce traffic rules?

Speed Humps in mass, or is it en masse?

Just a small part of the problem, but some of our traffic lights are sooo long and so unnecessary outside of an hour a day or less.

Even normally law-abiding people are tempted to treat reds as stop signs when you stop for minutes at a time at intersections with empty parking lots (see 18th Street, where there are like three lights for parking lots between Union Station and Chouteau. Not streets, parking lots).

Then on Washington, the lights at places like 10th and Washington (minor N/S streets) are absurdly timed, where Washington gets a two-minute long green light to a few seconds for N/S traffic. The lights on Washington are timed to move traffic down Washington to the detriment of pedestrians.

I don’t drive much between 4:00 and 5:00 am but when I do (usually taking someone to the airport) I constantly and intentional run red lights for obvious reason- there is nobody out there

I think part of this stupidity is you don't have the traffic from 81 Cardinals games, 40-60 Blues games, shows at Peabody etc. The yahoos know downtown is a ghost town.

Just ask the Dutch for some of their rising red light bollards and let the city flex its sovereign immunity.

It looks like with a few, but not all. So I guess that makes my post invalid?

no, just saying it always seems to be a little worse in STL. other than Houston, none of the links seem to be working anymore. which other cities saw related gunfire?
