Im perfectly relaxed. It’s Clayton that should worried. It can’t pay its bills precisely because it’s permitted its sales tax revenue base to be driven out of town in pursuit of being a sterile white CBD

Long term Clayton will probably be fine. COVID hit it hard, but it's simply too well positioned to not see continued investment and vibrancy. Local incomes are very high and I expect we will see more pricey residential towers added in the coming years. Is it my vibe these days? Not really, but it's plenty of people's cup of tea.

Great. I missed that place. Their location on Cherokee was great.

Dado's Cafe on Hampton, technically in the STL Hills neighborhood is closing according to people close to the owner on Next Door.

Taqueria Morita closed in CWE. Continues rough last year for east of Taylor CWE retail.

They should have kept it seasonal on the Vicia lawn.  Heard they did not offer the best customer experience.  Went once and it was fine.
That space has had a hard time with Wasabi and now this folding rather quickly.

The cheapest tacos were like $5-$6/pop.  I think the era of 'craft tacos' is slowly coming to an end.  The place was good though.

Another one bites the dust. Quarrelsome coffee on Sarah closing. This has became a theme. I’ve been saying for a while I am very concerned about east CWE. It is bleeding retail. CWE needs density in its eastern and northern portions fast. The neighborhood is quickly becoming Euclid only.

Quarrelsome is especially surprising because it was always packed. Probably the busiest place I can remember closing in recent memory. Unless the classic yogi-ism applied here, not sure why it’s closing. Cash flow had to be strong.

Quarrelsome operators own the building. Acquisition cost was $1.1MM. I wouldn’t be surprised if the full buildout + equipment was another $1MM if not more. So now you’re obligated on a $2MM note and your business is selling cups of coffee.

So I guess they did some bad crunching of the numbers at the beginning? Because I have to say they could not have anticipated to be any busier. I don’t know what their volume was, but they could not have had more customers inside at any given time. It was probably the most packed coffee shop per capita of the space in the region that I have experienced. Coma, Protagonist, and Quarrelsome are the 3 busiest coffee shops consistently.

I'll fully admit I'd never been in Quarrelsome because if I'm in that area I always do Park Avenue. But my wife had gone in Quarrelsome a couple of times, liked it and noted the business.

Let's not forget that area has also seen 6 North Coffee and Cafe Ventana come and go.

I think having the place packed with people on their laptops for hours on end but just spending $4.5 may camouflage and also contribute to the issue

@dbInSouthCity that has been my experience. Space is full but not much of a line, if any, to order.

It makes me sad how Laclede & Newstead has several nice storefronts, none of which are retail/restaurant.

Olive between Taylor and Euclid has great potential to be a nice second little retail area in CWE. The problem is the north part of CWE has a lot of empty lots and some abandoned buildings. I don’t think people realize how much it is lacking in development despite the boom in the neighborhood from the last decade. It’s shocking a developer hasn’t swooped in and filled the rest of it out. See the emptiness in the photo below

Generally, the city and CWE nimbys need to realize the neighborhood is nowhere near filled out. The CWE walkability and vibrancy is nowhere near its potential. It can be more than a one commercial strip neighborhood

Since this is the restaurant thread, I do wonder what Bowood by Niche plans are for the large empty lot across the street from them. They own it

The Bridge apt building would help, but there was the refusal to back the TIF, then Kevin Bryant going public with his frustrations.
