Only United Provisions is within Walking distance for me. Crossing Kingshighway?, no thanks. What Sav-a-Lot? I walk to the Schnucks on Clayton, which most people would think is insanely far, but I'm a weirdo. Yes, please open another grocer on DeBaliviere, I'll do all my shopping there, if I can. I tried to with Fields Foods, but alas.symphonicpoet wrote: ↑Oct 05, 2023And Whole foods, an Aldi, United Provisions on the Loop and a bunch of other small grocers and convenience stores and even a Save-a-Lot. I'd guess it's one of the densest areas in town, so it makes sense there's more grocers there in more variety than your usual neighborhood. Especially since there's such a dramatic range in the quite affluent to the working class, students, doctors, professors, service workers . . . Quite the mix, really.Debaliviere91 wrote: ↑Oct 04, 2023I am not totally convinced the demand is there for the Debaliviere location due to the population of the surrounding area and the fact that there are multiple other grocers in the area. There are two Schnucks and a Straubs within 2.5 miles.

^It's at Page and Union, which is a pretty good hike from you, and I'm not sure it's a great grocery anyway. We almost never go to the one down on Loughborough. Went in a few times, but they seem more expensive than Schnucks and the selection isn't as good, se we've only really been back when Schnucks was closed on a holiday and they happened to be open.
Maybe Greater St. Louis could broker a package deal with all the Field Food locations and entice Lidl to enter the market.

its where I shop sometimes 'back east' and was informed on this forum that Lidl simply does not have the shipping outreach to vendor stores here

And Downtown West? Now that Fields is gone where is the closest grocer? Seems like the area is wanting an Aldis
Yet Aldis can put one just west of the innerbelt on Olive yet there is one not far west and east of that new location on Olive

Aldi's should have went into the Fields Foods on LaFayette. Now that vacant location has been sold to A.T. Still Dental - so I hear.

I suspect they only purchased it to increase their parking capacity

There is still a Fresh Thyme at Foundry and a SaveALot at Jefferson and Lafayette, right?chris fuller wrote: ↑Aug 11, 2024And Downtown West? Now that Fields is gone where is the closest grocer? Seems like the area is wanting an Aldis

Does the new Target on Grand have all of the grocery sections that some of the ones in the county do?

Minimal selection of food at the Target at Grand
That SaveALot is a mess
That SaveALot is a mess
Schnucks downtown is 3/4 mile away on 9th street. Fresh Thyme and SaveALot are both a little over 2 miles, which isn't far to drive but a bit of a trek for regular groceries for someone trying to live car-free or car-lite as I imagine many Downtown (West) residents are. Lack of convenient options to quickly pick up a few items definitely detracts from the area.Black02AltimaSE wrote: ↑Aug 12, 2024There is still a Fresh Thyme at Foundry and a SaveALot at Jefferson and Lafayette, right?chris fuller wrote: ↑Aug 11, 2024And Downtown West? Said it before: work out a deal where Greater St. Louis, Inc. packages up all the Field Foods locations, (include a decent warehouse incentive) and pitches it to Lidl as the entry into the Midwest.
Not sure they’re the grocer you desire. Most of Lidl’s stores are suburban. Look at Norfolk VA metro. All the stores are suburban. Except 1 that’s near their CBD…it’s been closed down.
Personally, I thought the store was fine but small. I'll likely chose to go to the larger Targets almost all times.stlurbanist wrote: ↑Aug 12, 2024Target at grand is a disappointment.
And - this is being a little picky - while pedestrian access is absolutely there, its janky. one serpentining ramp. SLU kids will be walking there and have to dodge traffic.

AT Still purchased the former Fields Foods and Tim Horton's donut buildings as well as the massive surface parking lots. I am meeting with their chief strategist in a couple weeks. He was tasked with "identifying opportunities for and developing the property to maximize impact on the area, while meeting the mission of the University."
I have plenty of ideas about the services they provide and could provide as my wife works in the ortho world. But, I'm open to ideas/suggestions if you have thoughts on the physical properties. Street trees, less asphalt, support nearby housing on Bohemian Hill, etc. are obvious. But, what would you like to see? I will try to represent this larger community in the conversation.

^ good news! multifamily + small commercial. i imagine employees and students of AT Still wouldn't mind a place to get coffee and a couple of options for breakfast/lunch. a replacement grocer would be awesome but that may be outside their purview.
I lived in Lafayette Square for 6 years or so and the Fields Food was an anchor for the neighborhood. A quality grocer to replace Fields should be a top priority. Mixed-use retail with retail tenants that serve basic needs of neighborhood would also be great.MarkGroth2020 wrote: ↑Aug 13, 2024AT Still purchased the former Fields Foods and Tim Horton's donut buildings as well as the massive surface parking lots. Oh come on already... some of you are negative Nellie's about everything. Others, I swear, post out their butt without even stepping foot into these places.
The new Target Midtown is great IMO. It is much larger than most urban Targets we have been into. The grocery has way better prices than that of Fields (and Fresh Thyme) and offers all the everyday needs. Sure, you may not find the 20 televisions to choose from in the suburban store... but there are plenty enough for what the store is offering and targeting in the area.

I have been to the Target 3-4 times. I will go hear (1 mile away) before going to Hampton. I also used to go to the Fields on Lafayette and really wanted another grocer in there. It is a solid density area and if can be supported.
