^^The Jan-May calendar schedule concept is a bit outdated.  It came from when representative were mostly big landowners and the went to legislature in the winter between harvest and planting.  Not exactly the world we live in now days.  Very few jobs give you a yearly 5 month break.  If they were all teacher they should be alders during the summer break.

Its odd that people seem to want to hold alders to the highest moral standards but simultaneously withhold the ability to self support from the alders.  This makes it possible to really make the role their priority.  A job with a lot of power that doesn't pay the bills is an invitation for corrupt influences.  Not to give people too much of a pass but who could do that job without finding money on the side somewhere.

It should be a part time job and Jones admin has already getting alders out of a lot of things they never should have been part of (ie development). Their job should be just to consider and vote on legislation.  Jan to May in session like state legislature
Maybe it made sense for it to be a part-time job in 1914, but it does not seem to make a lot of sense now. It just seems to be an archaic remnant from a time when legislative and administrative procedures were much simpler, there was less bureaucracy, and most people who held the job earned good secondary income (from owning land or businesses).
Most legislatures have full-time members, why is that not the case for the city?

I wouldn't be an alderman for $1M a year. Do you realize the stuff they get inundated with? People calling about dog poop, abandoned vehicles, etc? Not worth it. No win situation.

No tracking mechanism for logging 32 hours of weekly aldermanic work?  Hilarious.

^I think that's the cutoff on when the Feds require you to provide nifty things like benefits. Before the mid 90s they could work you as long as they wanted without providing bennies. (And "small businesses" like a Mickey D's franchise maybe still can.)

^Good question. I'd always assumed not, but I'm guessing they will now.

Just looked at some of the board bills voting results on St. Louis gov page, and holy sh*t how did anyone elect this ***** Bill Stephens? That little dipshit votes no on every single development vote. Dumbass wants to move St. Louis to the dark ages

Roughly 20 days from the first round of voting. What are you all seeing in your wards? Any predictions?

I'm in the 8th ward and while Ken Ortmann did update his signs I haven't seen that he is expanding his base much beyond his usual eastern end of Cherokee Street (antique stores) and a couple of homes near Cat's Meow. I haven't seen too many Kelly signs yet either. I think those two are just seeing who can make it into the next round as Spencer almost certainly has one of the two spots for April sewed up.

Down here in the new W1 I'd say the yard sign race is tied between Anne Schweitzer and newcomer Tony Kirchner. I've seen both out knocking doors but haven't had a chance to talk to either of them. A third candidate (Kotraba) has a few signs out but can't say I've seen/heard much about him, so expect the former two to advance from the primary. If I were to guess, I'd say Anne wins in April but by a smaller margin than might otherwise be expected.

Tina Pihl has been thoroughly canvassing in person here in the CWE.  She has been through our block twice (herself) and staffers at least one other time.  I think she knows she has an uphill battle.

Interestingly no yard signs war here.

Ward 4 Vaccaro yard signs seem to dominate south of Manchester, but there are occasional Narayan signs. Vaccaro's red and yellow signs really stand out.
Literally no sign of Otto.

I think Vaccaro has his ward won.

Jennifer Florida and Daniela Velasquez seem to have a similar amount of signs up in the sixth ward.

The bar near Bates and Virginia has a big sign for Kotraba.

Odd as that's a cop hangout and Kirchner is a former deputy.
