I simply can't see the Cardinals spending nearly a half billion on Juan Soto over a 10-to-12-year period, and it's the safest guess you could ever make that Juan Soto isn't going to close himself off to his free agency options, no matter who trades for him. He's looking at potentially receiving the largest contract in the history of the sport.
I could see the Cardinals trading for Juan Soto as a rental. I think that makes some sense for the club. A lineup featuring Edman-Goldschmidt-Soto-Arenado at the top of it would be formidable for a few years and might result in a deep October run or two.
Soto is not a free agent until after the 2024 season.
As for the Blues and Tkachuk, you'd certainly love to see it, but I do worry about the cost.
