I'm giving again this month to IISTL, really love their goals to over-deliver. Such a big opportunity for the region if they can keep achieve everything they are hoping to...

Guys for god sake read the posts before yours, this is the 4th time the same story has been posted today
I know neighborhood demographics have changed. No question due to safety issues and school options. Have there been business closures due to the change? Have some Bosnians remained in the neighborhood?dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Jan 17, 2022It ignores the reality of the last 5 years. Little Bosnia doesn’t exist anymore. About 70% of Bosnian businesses have left. There are many couple hundred Bosnians left in bevoSTLinCHI wrote: ↑Jan 17, 2022I know neighborhood demographics have changed. I think the confusion is likely due to posts being moved from the St. Louis in the National Media Thread to here. I have noticed several of my posts being moved as of late without explanation. The mods are out of control!dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Jan 17, 2022Guys for god sake read the posts before yours, this is the 4th time the same story has been posted today

Yeah, I posted it elsewhere and got moved. And I did make sure it wasn’t posted in Nat Media. Just didn’t expect immigration to be under retail and biz developmentEbsy wrote: ↑Jan 18, 2022I think the confusion is likely due to posts being moved from the St. Louis in the National Media Thread to here. I'd love to see the incoming Afghan population land somewhere along the Gravois corridor. Honestly, Bevo would be fantastic. But so would anywhere along that corridor that includes Tower Grove South, Tower Grove East, Fox Park, Gravois Park, Benton Park West and Benton Park.
There is not a single part of that Gravois strip that couldn't use some help, but I think it has incredible potential.
I want the refugees placed in a situation that allows both them and the city the opportunity to grow and benefit from each other. This adds to my optimism for this city.

You have to understand where these people are coming from, I’d assume like a lot of Bosnians they came from small villages. Eventually they’ll make their way to something similar. There are more Bosnians in both Franklin and Jefferson counties today then STL city

I posted it in the St. Louis in the New thread and a mod decided to move it. Might be that happened to several people.dbInSouthCity wrote: ↑Jan 17, 2022Guys for god sake read the posts before yours, this is the 4th time the same story has been posted today

I do agree it seems like the center of Bosnian population has scattered to other parts of south city and into south county. Gravois--whether in south city or Lemay/Affton still seems to be the center of Bosnian commerce based on business names in that stretch.
I've noticed some of the formerly Bosnian businesses in Bevo are now Mexican restaurants or Middle Eastern shops. Nothing new or unique to STL. Look at how Little Italy in Manhattan is mostly part of Chinatown now. It hasn't been completely abandoned by Italian-Americans, it's just more of a cultural touchstone rather than where the majority live. Same with Bosnians and Bevo.

This is either comedy genius or a terrible attempt at a troll job.
Hm. I actually thought it was a rather lovely piece. It's great exposure for our city. So, forgive me if I'm a bit perplexed by your pessimism.Laife Fulk wrote: ↑Jan 18, 2022This is either comedy genius or a terrible attempt at a troll job.

^ i don't think he was trying to be insulting—just making a joke. this article has been posted 4 or 5 times already in various threads and mods have been moving the posts to the immigration thread.
Well maybe he needs to realize that without inflection or tone, generally sarcastic humor will always fall flat. I didn't think it was funny. I'm trying to share an uplifting piece that reflects well on our city. Just because one or two other people have perhaps posted the same link elsewhere..doesn't mean all of the rest of us got the notification or saw that. Assumption is ignorant. So something nice has now been sh*t on, because one person feels everyone should just KNOW what they've seen personally.urban_dilettante wrote: ↑Jan 18, 2022^ i don't think he was trying to be insulting—just making a joke. this article has been posted 4 or 5 times already in various threads and mods have been moving the posts to the immigration thread.
My point: consider your approach first next time, Laife Fulk. You don't know me like that. So don't step to me like you do.

Also, I do feel bad for @walker for having to clean all this up

^I wonder if there is any connection to the new Chinatown up on Olive. The first I heard of it was in the 90s, and the older businesses look to have opened in the 80s, maybe. That's probably about when Grand and Gravois really began to go downhill. (And I'm really hoping Garcia can help it bounce back. I swear, the man is trying to fix my childhood, since I spent so much time in and around the buildings adjacent to his properties on Grand and Kingshighway.) Would be neat to find out if there's a connection between the old and the new. There really almost has to be.
I also wonder if there'd be any interest in a similar discussion of Vietnamese American immigration. It's not as sexy, but I believe there are more Vietnamese folks in town than any other Asian ethnic group. (As evidenced by the proliferation of Vietnamese organizations and stores in my new neighborhood. Including one decaying school, but we won't go there.) Never you mind that my wife is Vietnamese, so I have kind of a personal interest in that one.
Anyway, my thanks to Peter Tao and Mark Groth for this story.

Anecdotally I’ve had a fair number of Vietnamese students - more than any other Asian ethnicity - in my classes over the past few years.symphonicpoet wrote:^I wonder if there is any connection to the new Chinatown up on Olive. ^And yet, when my wife was at SLU working on her masters she was one of just two Vietnamese or Vietnamese American students in the program. (So we ended up going out for Chinese a lot with her classmates. In restaurants that might or might not be related to the article above.)
