CS..

Pappy's has a product they make fresh everyday (that's why they are getting the RAVE reviews). This in itself required tweaking to make enough not to sell out vs not throw all their profits in the dumpster. They HAVE SET HOURS..alway's have.(they did change W.E. hours after being open a month) They are doing better at estimating what to make (up to 16 hours in advance ) .. give them a little time as they are getting better every day/week..

Given the U won't have any of the same issues with food, I would guess they will have set hours to start. But, If they see no business or not enough business to warrent being open at certain times, I would expect them to make changes ( Like Pappy's did) as any good business person would.

The U - "Education For Your Stomach"

Grand opening will be Monday, April 7th. The hours will be Monday through Saturday 11 AM until 3:30 AM.

The College of Arts and Sandwiches will feature fresh grilled subs like Cheese Steak, BBQ Bacon Cheddar Beef, Chicken Parmesan, Ham and Swiss, Reuben, Salmon Club and even a Tofu Sandwich plus others. All are made on a great rustic bread, similar to a ciabatta. The College of Lettuce Administration will have a variety of salads with the option of adding meats, etc. Fries, potato salad, slaw, chili and soups will also be featured. There will also be a box lunch menu for larger groups.

Check out the website at www.theustl.com... its still under construction but there is some basic info there.

Well I know most on this forum are big fans of the white bread, we are actually using a nice rustic loaf from Companion. These are bound to be some of the best sandwiches in STL!!!

I'm really looking forward to see the responses from everyone here, its a tough crowd... I just hope I don't run out of anything when Central Scrutinizer comes in or I will be in BIG trouble.

I'm a wheat man myself, or sometimes rye. What I really don't like are those hard breads that you can't even bite through without the guts of the sandwich flying off in differant directions (ciabatta, for example).

the bread should complement the rest of the sandwich components nicely and should not be over or understated. i'm talking true sandwich synergy here. there is an opportunity to create a utopian sandwich society in midtown. do not take this responsibility lightly, kustramo.

I don't at all. I eat at least one sandwich a day and I totally understand what you say. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

I'd like to suggest you bring in some Protzel's corned beef to serve on rye with mustard. Then, you should not allow customers to put "all the fixins" on it to keep it real.

Best of luck.

I was fortunate enough to attend a pre opening and can tell you this is a great place for SPECIALTY sandwiches!

I tried the Chicken 101 and the U-bin .. with string onions, deep fried and

was impressed with it all.

They open this week, so get on by and support the newest eatery in Midtown Alley!

It's right next to Buffalo Brew and Pappy's!! =D>

There really is a college town-like atmosphere springing up in the area these days.

^Silly question, I know, but why aren't all these new places going in along and around Grand instead of Olive?

^ So Mark Wegmann can feed his family. :P Doesn't SLU own much of the land along Grand? On Google Maps it looks mostly like greenspace.

Because Olive is outside of Grand Center Inc.'s control and is developing organically, letting market forces dictate what goes on. Funny how that works.

^Yes, that was my point. It is really sad. You have a perfectly viable pedestrian corridor with a lot of empty retail space, and with tons of foot and motor traffic, which would benefit tremendously from this retail, yet it is all going into a nondescript, non-residential, low-rise area to the east. Yes, I know they are probably hoping to capitalize on the traffic from the new arena, but most of the foot traffic will be going to/past Grand anyway, and much of the motor traffic as well.
