Yep.
This is a good place. I hope they do well. I will be a semi-regular.
Me too, for both delivery and eat-in. The prices are great, food is great and its awesome toahve this kind of casual good food in the neighborhood.
Oh, and yes, Hardee's is crap
One more thing, if you think 2 people can eat at Quiznos for less than The U, you are just wrong. I work in Clayton and go to Quiznos a fair amount if I need a quick bite and for a regular sandwich, chips and a drink its always around $10 per person...

So we're supposed to trust the critique of a person who thinks that Subway and Quizno's quality is equal to that of The U's?!
Keep up the good work kustramo. I welcome more quality quick bite food joints with fair prices.kustramo wrote:I'm actually a little surprised at this comment. In all honesty though, I would like to know where you can get food on the quality of The U's that is under that price. Even Jimmy Johns (which is hardly the same quality) is about the same. I'll spend $9 on a sandwich, chips and a drink there. You will spend 7 or 8 at McDonalds or Hardees even now. Subway, Quiznos etc gives maybe 2-3 oz. of meat where we give 5oz. on every sandwich. Just in the last year the price of food has been skyrocketing... for example, eggs up 200%, wheat up 100%, corn up 100%... its very hard to make money in this business, and unfortunately for us little guys, the big boys have the bulk buying advantage.

Seems like in every thread everything is too "expensive" with you whether it's housing, pizza, or sandwiches. Ever think that maybe all of these things are priced normally and you just need to make more money? Perhaps supporting a wife and kid on $3X,XXX a year is very tough and you shouldn’t be eating out rather than demanding people lower their prices to fit your income.JuiceInDogtown wrote:This would be a good place to go with a friend, but I didn't dig the price tag for my wife and myself. 2 sandwiches, 1 drink, 1 order of fries; $16.xx
Wife got the chicken teriyaki but didn't like the sauce, which I liked quite a bit. I don't like the "teriyaki" sauce they use at Subway. I got a chicken cheese steak (I think thats what it was called) and I liked it as well. Again, just me would have cost like $8-9, just wasn't digging the price for 2.
Yes, this is my second thread ever saying that I thought something was a bit overpriced. With 1,250 posts, that's all I ever do, is complain about prices! The quality was fine, I wasn't going nuts over the food, I just said it was "pretty good," you self important jack*ss.
BTW, I'm on my first year out of college, so "making more money" obviously isn't an option, or I'd be doing it. I make about 10k more than the average IT worker at my level (it's over 40k).
Sorry guys, I guess I should be salivating over "The U." After all, they're in the city and they're locally owned! I apologize that I wasn't going ape-sh*t for it and would rather have a sit-down-and-serve meal for $30. My apologies again!
mophipsi wrote:I had delivery one night last week and it was $9 for one person delivered to my door...how can you beat that? I had the Italian beef and oniion straws, which was a large meal. I think their prices are completely reasonable. It seems on this board no matter what the restaurant is, the one complaint heard every time is about how it is too expensive. In most cases as with B & T pizza and here I simply disagree. I would rather pay $9 for a quality sandwich at the U than $7 for crap at hardees or mcdonalds.
Durr? The end of my post said
This wasn't saying "DAMN THATS f***ing EXPENSIVE!" it was saying that as a family, I don't think it's worth going in and spend $16-20 on 2 lunches when I could spend $10 more and get served, but I would totally go in there, sit down with a friend, and spend $10 on my own lunch, just like I do damn near every day.Juice13610 wrote:Again, just me would have cost like $8-9, just wasn't digging the price for 2.
And the food at Hardee's is "crap" because it's a chain, right?
Again, I'm very sorry, but I basically said "pretty good," I wasn't going nuts for it. So, as far as the quality, what do you want me to say? I can eat almost anywhere for $10 at a fast food joint or a sandwich shop, and I don't see where the quality is so much better...Sorry.kustramo wrote:In all honesty though, I would like to know where you can get food on the quality of The U's that is under that price.
I said I'd go back with a friend, but damn, never mind! Looks like I offended the owner pretty bad! Don't want to get spit in my food or anything if they figure me out.
You ate at Steak N Shake, where a sandwich on white bread is like $8.Mark Wegmann wrote:I went to steaknshake last week and spent $24 on two people..
I typically spend about 15.00 for two at Mickey D's !!
I think for the quality of the food, It's more than fair..just my opinion.
Idea
Maybe the U should offer a PBJ for 2 with 1 drink and 1 fries at $10 and put in a playland
Sorry if I offended!
Subway or Quizno's. And you get more food. The Central Scrutinizer wrote:Huh? Where on Earth can you go for less than that? At the same quality, of course. Don't say Subway. Or Quiznos's.
It's 2 f***ing sandwiches. Sorry, wife and me ate at the Tex-Mex place down the street the other night for $25 and had 2 huge plates of food. Here we had 2 sandwiches and fries.
Let me edit my post
This is a great place to go with anyone in the world, and the price was awesome because it is a locally owned business in the city. I masturbated all over my receipt because it was so cheap for the quality.
Wife got the chicken teriyaki and said she will never eat anything else in her life, I had a bite and decided it was the greatest combination of bread and chicken and teriyaki sauce that I have ever eaten. I don't like the "teriyaki" sauce they use at Subway because it is not a locally owned restaurant in the city. I got a chicken cheese steak (I think thats what it was called) and I have decided that I will eat at the U for breakfast, lunch, and dinner from this day forward. The price is so good for one person that I am going to start buying enough food for 2 so that I can throw one of the meals away. The "quality" is just too good to buy their food, even if you aren't hungry.
Dude, what is wrong with you? Get a grip!

Trust me, its no offense at all, I use this site to help me improve my business and get honest opinions of what people think, and I would never spit in anyone's food, I'm an adult and a business person, not some immature idiot with a grudge against someone that has an opinion that differs from mine or that doesn't like my product. All I said was that I was surprised that you said that about the price. I never claimed this place to be a sit-down restaurant with service and that I should be competing with them. If you feel you should only come here with friends and not a date then thats cool with me. The point is, there are very few places around that you can eat at anywhere at all for under $8 a person unless it is mass produced fast food. And my definition of quality is not saying I have the best food in the world, its just that compared to Hardee's or Quizno's or where ever, the ingredients we use are fresher and better than those places. We use boneless, skinless chicken breasts that we pound ourselves, sliced rib eye for the beef, slice our own corned beef and ham, make all of our soups, chili and salad dressings in house from scratch, no preservatives.
As far as saying "the food at Hardee's is "crap" because it's a chain," well, not every chain has crap food, but having worked in restaurants my whole life, I will tell you that the food at places like that is much more processed and mass produced, which in some people's opinion is "crap". I eat fast food all the time, I just know its not fresh, probably microwaved and maybe not the best quality ingredients because ultimately places like that have to appease shareholders as much as diners and quality of product can suffer in order to save a few cents here and there.

Thank you for that. I liked the food and said that it was a good place to go with a friend for a quick bite, just said that I'd rather have a sit down for a few more bucks if going out. Apparently saying that set a few people off.
As far as me getting a grip, you're probably right, but I had personal attacks being shot at me for my opinion.
I guess it's just the nature of an internet forum, people probably don't want me to die in my sleep nearly as bad as what their posts looked like.

The wife and I tried it recently - great stuff. Love the bread.
After watching the Travel Channel show about "best places to pig out" (mentioned in the "best pizza" thread), I was thinking that The U should come up with some sort of "challenge" - eat x sandwiches in one hour and get your name up on the wall, that sort of thing. College kids are always willing to try stupid stuff like that.

Picked up a sandwich after the Cards game last week. Very good and looking forward to trying more, but disappointed that I fall outside the Kingshighway cutoff for delivery.
Just giving everyone a heads up...
The U. has recently applied for its liquor license and should be serving a variety of beers and some wine by mid-July. Look out for the standard AB products, several offerings from Schlafly and a variety of bottled beers from PBR up to some nicer micros. Wines will be very basic but we may also do a drink special (maybe margarita, etc...), but no full bar offerings.

And we got a nice little write up in the Post today!

As far as when for the liquor, I'd say by mid-July at the latest. We are also working on developing some new menu ideas such as some varied bread offerings and some new dessert options... anyone say deep fried twinkies?
Also, in the coming months we will be having some live entertainment and possibly some trivia nights, especially when the school year kicks in. If anyone has any input or know some musicians that just want to play (and not get paid, lol) let me know.

I'm trying to get by for the new bread, I hope you have a crusty roll style like JJ or Quiznos ..I relly like the quality of the content but prefer this style bread ( but not toooo thick..less bread more filling!) I look forward to Mr. Bonwich's sons review!

The U got some good coverage on Sauce on the Street during the Channel 4 news last night.

I stopped in and had the new bread today .. gotta say very tasty stuff!! :lol
Our budy Kustramo is everywhere these days. This week it's the West End Word.
Mark Wegmann wrote:I stopped in and had the new bread today .. gotta say very tasty stuff!! :lol
I agree: the new bread is a lot better. I'd crossed The U off my list for sandwiches because the thick/heavy panini bread was too much for me. But they're back on my rotation with the new stuff.

Can you still get the original bread too? What is the new bread like? I'm going to have to investigate...

Yes, both types are available.
