Wow!! I had the hot italian beef sandwich and it was the best sandwich I have ever eaten. My friend had the asian salad and loved that too. This is definitely not fast food.

you got that right!
Each sandwich has it's own twist and I've had 4-5 and ALL were very good.
also the deep fried string onions are made to order and are really great!
I'm sure as word gets out JJ's will take a hit...

I wanted to stop in Fri night,-very cool that the U was still open late- but the parking situation was crazy, between Lush and Dante's, I suppose.
Looked to be a good crowd inside so good for the U. My turn will have to wait.

We are in the process of working that out, but as of now the valet will let you park in the back or at one of their meters... you just have to let them know you are going to The U. We are working on some signs to state that fact.

Will the valet expect to be tipped? I'm not cheap but when stopping in for a late night snack I'm not thinking valet parking.
Anyway, it seems like not a terrible problem to have.

FOOD GENES: Adam Kustra, 26, the son of Doug and Rosemary Cusumano, members of one of our town's premier restaurant families, recently opened "The U," at 3108 Olive Street, just east of Compton Avenue. Kustra comes by his foodie knowledge not just from his stepdad, but also from his history as a Culinary Arts Institute grad, class of 2002. Kustra earned his business chops with a degree in business administration from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2006. All that education may be one reason Kustra has subtitled his restaurant: "Education for your Stomach," and features such menu categories as the college of arts and sandwiches and the college of lettuce administration. The Cusumano family is formerly of Kemoll's and The Bistro at Grand Center, where Kustra was the chef. Among other food families in town, they are also related to the Gabrieles, who own Agostino's, Giovanni's and Il Bel Lago, among other eateries. The U will feature hot sandwiches on Companion bread, interesting salads and what are rumored to be awesome onion straws.

^Just to let you know, there are a few updates being made to that... (We aren't related to the Gabrieles, it was the Culinary Institute of America)

Imagine an Outback Bloomin Onion broken down into individual french fry like trans fats delivery systems.
You get the idea.
OK maybe, but what about the oil he dips the onion straws into???kustramo wrote:^ Our fryer is trans-fat free!

I've had the chicken philly twice now, and it's very good.

This would be a good place to go with a friend, but I didn't dig the price tag for my wife and myself. 2 sandwiches, 1 drink, 1 order of fries; $16.xx
Wife got the chicken teriyaki but didn't like the sauce, which I liked quite a bit. I don't like the "teriyaki" sauce they use at Subway. I got a chicken cheese steak (I think thats what it was called) and I liked it as well. Again, just me would have cost like $8-9, just wasn't digging the price for 2.

I'm actually a little surprised at this comment. In all honesty though, I would like to know where you can get food on the quality of The U's that is under that price. Even Jimmy Johns (which is hardly the same quality) is about the same. I'll spend $9 on a sandwich, chips and a drink there. You will spend 7 or 8 at McDonalds or Hardees even now. Subway, Quiznos etc gives maybe 2-3 oz. of meat where we give 5oz. on every sandwich. Just in the last year the price of food has been skyrocketing... for example, eggs up 200%, wheat up 100%, corn up 100%... its very hard to make money in this business, and unfortunately for us little guys, the big boys have the bulk buying advantage.

I went to steaknshake last week and spent $24 on two people..
I typically spend about 15.00 for two at Mickey D's !!
I think for the quality of the food, It's more than fair..just my opinion.
Maybe the U should offer a PBJ for 2 with 1 drink and 1 fries at $10 and put in a playland

$16 is very reasonable for lunch for two. Especially a place with The U's quality.

Huh? Where on Earth can you go for less than that? At the same quality, of course. Don't say Subway. Or Quiznos's.
I had delivery one night last week and it was $9 for one person delivered to my door...how can you beat that? I had the Italian beef and oniion straws, which was a large meal. I think their prices are completely reasonable. It seems on this board no matter what the restaurant is, the one complaint heard every time is about how it is too expensive. In most cases as with B & T pizza and here I simply disagree. I would rather pay $9 for a quality sandwich at the U than $7 for crap at hardees or mcdonalds.

Do you ever do anything except complain how "expensive" things are? Seems like in every thread everything is too "expensive" with you whether it's housing, pizza, or sandwiches. Ever think that maybe all of these things are priced normally and you just need to make more money? Perhaps supporting a wife and kid on $3X,XXX a year is very tough and you shouldn’t be eating out rather than demanding people lower their prices to fit your income.JuiceInDogtown wrote:This would be a good place to go with a friend, but I didn't dig the price tag for my wife and myself. 2 sandwiches, 1 drink, 1 order of fries; $16.xx

Yes, this is my second thread ever saying that I thought something was a bit overpriced. With 1,250 posts, that's all I ever do, is complain about prices! The quality was fine, I wasn't going nuts over the food, I just said it was "pretty good," you self important jack*ss.
BTW, I'm on my first year out of college, so "making more money" obviously isn't an option, or I'd be doing it. I make about 10k more than the average IT worker at my level (it's over 40k).
Sorry guys, I guess I should be salivating over "The U." After all, they're in the city and they're locally owned! I apologize that I wasn't going ape-sh*t for it and would rather have a sit-down-and-serve meal for $30. My apologies again!

Durr? The end of my post said
This wasn't saying "DAMN THATS ***** EXPENSIVE!" it was saying that as a family, I don't think it's worth going in and spend $16-20 on 2 lunches when I could spend $10 more and get served, but I would totally go in there, sit down with a friend, and spend $10 on my own lunch, just like I do damn near every day.Juice13610 wrote:Again, just me would have cost like $8-9, just wasn't digging the price for 2.
And the food at Hardee's is "crap" because it's a chain, right?
Again, I'm very sorry, but I basically said "pretty good," I wasn't going nuts for it. So, as far as the quality, what do you want me to say? I can eat almost anywhere for $10 at a fast food joint or a sandwich shop, and I don't see where the quality is so much better...Sorry.kustramo wrote:In all honesty though, I would like to know where you can get food on the quality of The U's that is under that price.
I said I'd go back with a friend, but damn, never mind! Looks like I offended the owner pretty bad! Don't want to get spit in my food or anything if they figure me out.
You ate at Steak N Shake, where a sandwich on white bread is like $8.Mark Wegmann wrote:I went to steaknshake last week and spent $24 on two people..

Subway or Quizno's. And you get more food. The Central Scrutinizer wrote:Huh? Where on Earth can you go for less than that? At the same quality, of course. Don't say Subway. Or Quiznos's.
It's 2 ***** sandwiches. Sorry, wife and me ate at the Tex-Mex place down the street the other night for $25 and had 2 huge plates of food. Here we had 2 sandwiches and fries.
Let me edit my post
This is a great place to go with anyone in the world, and the price was awesome because it is a locally owned business in the city. I masturbated all over my receipt because it was so cheap for the quality.
Wife got the chicken teriyaki and said she will never eat anything else in her life, I had a bite and decided it was the greatest combination of bread and chicken and teriyaki sauce that I have ever eaten. I don't like the "teriyaki" sauce they use at Subway because it is not a locally owned restaurant in the city. I got a chicken cheese steak (I think thats what it was called) and I have decided that I will eat at the U for breakfast, lunch, and dinner from this day forward. The price is so good for one person that I am going to start buying enough food for 2 so that I can throw one of the meals away. The "quality" is just too good to buy their food, even if you aren't hungry.
