ST. LOUIS (KMOX)- A fire at the Peabody Opera House has gone to a second alarm.

Firefighters were called to the theater, which is nearing the end of a multi-million dollar renovation, at about 11 a.m. Construction workers evacuated the building.

The fire was declared under control by around 11:20 a.m., but more firefighters were sent for manpower purposes, because of the heat.

The fire comes just a few hours before Opera House officials are holding a press conference there, to announce a partnership with Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s John L. Trotter Multiple Sclerosis Center as the charitable partner for the reopening gala on October 1.
Hopefully not serious.

Filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick will be in St. Louis Sept. 19 to screen segments of their next documentary series, "Prohibition," at the new Peabody Opera House. The Peabody (formerly the Kiel Opera House) doesn't open until Oct. 1, so the "Prohibition" screening also provides a chance to get a look at the restoration before the opening gala.

Burns and Novick will also answer questions about "Prohbition" at the screening, presented by KETC's Nine Network of Public Media. When the filmmakers introduced the PBS miniseries (airing Oct. 2-4) to TV critics meeting in Los Angeles last month, Burns said St. Louis and its breweries would play a significant role in telling the story of "Prohibition."

The choice of venue is significant, KETC said. "Planning for what was originally Kiel Opera House began during Prohibition; the building opened in 1934, not long after Prohibition ended."

Tickets for the event are $15 and are on sale as of 10 a.m. today through the Scottrade Center Box Office, by phone at (800) 745-3000, online at http://www.ticketmaster.com or at the door the night of the event, which begins at 7:30 p.m. For more information visit http://www.ninenet.org.

Hmmm...I wonder what KETC's neighbor, The Fox Theater, thinks about this.

Who are these hipster jam bands? When will Led Zeppelin, Frank Sinatra, or Aerosmith play the Kiel Opera house? Glad to see it's getting bookings.

^Amazing similarities...Great news for the Queen City...

Wonder what we got for $71 million more dollars of renovation...Supposedly the Cincy theater makeover cost three million...Is that difference what 20 years of vacancy costs???

Well, the Peabody has a ~50% higher seating capacity, but I don't think that alone accounts for the 68 million dollar difference! The Taft never closed, so they were spending money on maintenance and upgrades throughout the past 20 years. Plus I guess Peabody needed completely new A/V equipment which will add a couple million. Is there a breakdown available for what all the Peabody money was used for?

Does anyone know the story behind the bear statues outside the Kiel? I've seen many buildings with lion statues at the entrance, but this is the only building I've seen with bear statues in the front. Was this a popular decorative choice of the time or some quirk of the designer/architect?

Communist plot from the FDR era days of massive gov't intervention in our built community...lol...

Seriously, I did read that the bears represent the State of Missouri...not sure if thats the state flag bear or if the bear is the official state symbol of some kind...

I don't know, but when searching I found that there are two new smaller bears being installed out front: http://stlouis.cbslocal.com/2011/09/08/ ... era-house/

From a 1985 P-D story:
Legend has it that a national contest was held to choose a symbolic "guard" for the building. Robert Cronbach, a native St. Louisan who studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, won the competition. His design showed two bears, on leave from the coat of arms of the state of Missouri, crouching on pedestals at either end of the front of the building.

Cronbach was 25 at the time his design was selected in 1933. He was commissioned to carve one of the 10-ton limestone beasts (the eastern-most one), and Victor Holm executed the other. Cronbach, now 77 and a sculptor of some note, spends his time in New York City and France. To this day, the bears are listed on his resume as his first architectural commission.

I went to the preview of the Ken Burns and Lynn Novick documentary Prohibition. The Opera house is pretty awesome. Check it out as soon as you can! The documentary looks good too, Oct 2, 3, and 4 on Channel 9.

Well, I don't think Frank Sinatra is touring these days.

The opera house has a new attractive sign on the backside of the building at the section that is attached to the Scottrade Center. Looks good lit up at night!

I am guessing the ice rink was done to create buzz for the Opera House. Is that working?

I believe these temp ice skating rinks are popping up all over the place. The temporary ice skating rink near my new home in Walnut Creek, CA was packed on Sunday when I drove by. Hopefully they are seeing the same for downtown. Another note, this past weekend was lowest movie box office take in three years. Maybe everybody is skating instead :)

The other question, is the downtown rink taking away skaters from Forest Park?

Went to see the Grinch on Sunday. It was nice to not easily find street parking in that area on a Sunday :) . As the curtain went down, they announced that the ice rink is open across the street and your ticket stub will get you a discount. That made quite a few people go over to check it out.
