Encore, encore: Plans proceeding to reopen Kiel Opera House

After months of work on a plan to reopen the long-dark Kiel Opera House in downtown St. Louis, the St. Louis Blues owners and McEagle Properties aren't ready yet to say that they can raise the curtain and put entertainment back on stage there. But they are continuing to move in that direction.

Details, at this point, are hard to come by. Officials at McEagle, the city of St. Louis and SCP Worldwide in New York, which owns the Blues, say they prefer planning behind the scenes for now. Before they make their plans public, they want to make sure that what's on the drawing boards will work.

"If and when we decide to go forward, it won't be secret," said Daniel Brungard, a spokesman for McEagle. "This is something we are very interested in getting done."

But if they announce something, you're gonna love it!

But the good news is that it will or will not get done. They must have hired the same pr people as BPV. On the other hand, it looks like they maybe learned something from them.

I'm not too hard on the Blues owners that this hasn't been started immediately.

I've read that Checketts will probably start collecting profits from owning the Blues this year, his third year of ownership.

I really want to see this done, but I'm not going to be extremely harsh on the Blues ownership if this isn't started immediately. I think they're workin on it as they have the money. But I understand being skeptical, especially after we've seen the mirage that is Ballpark Village.

Things should be better for the Blues this year. The NHL gave them a lot better home schedule with more Friday/Saturday/Sunday and fewer Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday games.

Not an update to speak of, but there are a bunch of SWEET pics of the inside of the Opera House at this site. Actually it does mention some work being done at the very end.

What a great building. I really miss the Kiel Auditorium too. A great place to watch the Billikens back in the day.

I can't wait to see it done.

It looks like, from the pictures, that it's still in decent shape.

Looks like Lloyd should be manning that bar.

Kiel Auditorium, Circa 1972

I never attended a game at Kiel Auditorium but from looks alone, it seems like it would have been a better place to see a game than the St. Louis Arena was.

Basketball? They both had pretty severe faults. The higher lower-level seats at Kiel were much further away than the yellow seats at the Arena, but both end zones were defective. Kiel looks cool in that picture, but it was pretty dingy, and the Arena, while also dingy, had incredible wood superstructure visible inside.

Sacrilege!

I don't know about basketball, but for old-school hockey, there was no better atmposphere anywhere than the Arena.

I absolutely loved that place, but I suspect that it's more the result of childhood nostalgia than anything.

A refurbished Kiel would have been awesome. Isn't Memorial Auditorium in KC kind of like the Kiel? I've never been there, but I think they're of the same era.

I think the fans in Montreal, Boston and Chicago (among others) would strongly disagree.

Besides, old-school hockey hasn't been played in 30+ years.

It's sort of a moot argument, since they didn't play hockey at old Kiel -- or anywhere else in St. Louis, for that matter.

I wonder if they need to do some upgrades to Scottrade and might as well do Kiel at the same time?

I've heard sportwriters on 1120 and 1380 complain about having to ride the cargo elevator with smelly trash bins to get down to the locker room after the game.

Does anyone have any pics of Kiel Auditorium from the 80's? When I was a kid I went to alot of SLU games and that picture looks nothing like the images that I have in my head of the Kiel.

It's a perfectly fine venue, but I've heard some not readily apparent improvements need to be done to the Scottrade Center. (ice plant, elevators, heating and cooling) Over the summer the did tuckpointing and painting to part of the exterior.

I know someone who works for a lighting company and he claims they've been asked to bid on installing an LED lighting system for the arena exterior.

All I'm saying is that since the two buildings are connected they, could just do the work at the same time.
