Kiel: Blues, McKees take the stage

St. Louis Business Journal - by Lisa R. Brown and Christopher Tritto

St. Louis Blues owner SCP Worldwide has turned to McEagle Properties to develop a plan to reopen the Kiel Opera House.

The two companies are working on a feasibility plan, design and cost analysis. They expect to secure financing for a multimillion-dollar makeover of the historic downtown entertainment venue within the next three to six months, said Ken Munoz, a partner at SCP.

The plan is still in its early stages and faces several challenges. If a financial package is in place by mid-2008, construction and renovation would likely take another 12 to 18 months, Munoz said. That would put the project's estimated completion date somewhere around late 2009 to early 2010.

I don't know a whole lot about McKee, but that's quite a team with Checketts et al. There's no reason to doubt something is happening based on that.

Because of the dozen or so previous plans that have failed. Does anybody know if the Abrams Building is part of this?

I thought the same thing.

Is that why they have partnered on Ventana, the Meridian, Bee Hat Lofts, Lucas Lofts, Paul Brown, Bogen, etc? They are not really in the business to build "good will."

McEagle has not been a partner in any of those projects. You're thinking about Paric Corporation, founded by Paul McKee, that acted as general contractor on those and other prominent historic rehab projects.

I assumed that the note was intended directly for Paul, as opposed to McEagle. Which is why I pointed out some of his previous projects via Paric, which he founded, as you mentioned below, with whom he and his family are still heavily involved with.

Paric was also mentioned in the article as being the general contractor for this project.

They were not partner's in any project either. Paric was just the GC, with no financial stake except for construction. Big difference.

Personally, I'm a little wary of McKee's involvement. Seems like it's just one of those things he is doing to make himself look good. Maybe even at the request of our fine Mayor. With that said, I am excited to see what comes out of this.

Consider this, Kiel Opera house, old Courthouse across the street, a slowly dying Union Station, and two metor link stops within easy walking distance.

It should be ripe for a large scale development along the line of the Mercantile Exchange. Are there no persons with vision out there that have money?

Sounds like SCP has tons of experience with renovating and running operations like this. And they've got the money to back it up. It could be a slam dunk (no pun intended).

Checketts is stepping up efforts for the planned rehabilitation of the Kiel Opera House. It would be great to see the fantastic opera house come alive again.

Anybody know any details or if anything has gotten started yet?

The rest of the article is sports talk and odds and ends from Bernie Miklasz. The quoted 2 sentences are all I found about the opera house.

^You should read back a little in threads (or a lot depending on the thread). There is typically good info in them, such as the answer to your question.

It appears that part of the roof collapsed from the snow yesterday. Will this an excuse to tear it down?

There is a large open section on the very top that is part of the fly loft/ fire baffle system. You see it when you are looking west at the building on Market. From the outside it looks like there is no roof there. Are you sure it is not that that you are seeing? As far as I know, the structural integrity of the building is still very sound, so I dont see yesterdays snow being heavy enough to do this.... But god I hope that you are wrong...

I saw the same thing while driving today. It was from a distance, so I am not really sure what did or did not happen. It was on the highest point of the building. That small section up against Scottrade Center.

Thats the one... I noticed that about a year ago and paniced because I thought the same thing. but if you look on any of the sattelite images, you can see that its just how that part of the roof is configured....

For what it's worth, Andy Strickland has casually mentioned on 1380 a couple of times that the Blues owners are working on the Opera house and he expects them to have something done this year.

I've no idea from where he got that information or if it's accurate or not.

Strickland said something again today on the drive home. I only caught the tail end of it. Sounded positive.

I heard Strickland too...he said the Blues owners will have the Opera House up and running by 2010. A $50M dollar project. He said the Blues owners (NYC guys) have experienced with this type of venue and they will be bringing in entertainment (plays and such), much of what STL has not experienced. I'm waiting for the STL Business Journal to pick up this story.

I hope Strickland's Kiel information is more accurate than his recent reports on Billiken recruits.

Madison Square Garden has "The WaMu Theater" as part of the complex. If you've ever seen the NFL Draft, that's usually where it's held.

Blues Ownership (SCP Worldwide) is moving forward with their plans to renovate the historic Kiel Opera House. It will cost around $50 million to fund the project which they expect to open in April 2010.
