Movie to create 500 jobs, $50 million for St. Louis
St. Louis Business Journal - by Kelsey Volkmann
Shooting the new $30 million movie, “Up in the Air,” will bring more than George Clooney to St. Louis. It will generate 500 jobs, book 6,000 hotel room nights and create an economic impact of at least $50 million for the region.
The film, which will be directed by Oscar-nominated “Juno” director Jason Reitman, will need to employ local studio mechanics, drivers, electricians and carpenters.
“The economic impact is going to be phenomenal,” said Kim Tucci, head of the St. Louis Film Office. “And $50 million is my low estimate.”

George Clooney looks good in a suit, and he’s taking steps to make sure he never appears without one. He’s making yet another movie where he’ll play a corporate muckity-muck. Variety says he’s in talks to star in a film called Up in the Air, based on a novel, as just about everything is.
Clooney will play a corporate downsizer who is obsessed with collecting frequent flier miles. I’m not exactly sure why that’s something worth watching, but Juno helmer Jason Reitman seems to think there is, since he’s directing it.
Vera Farmiga Romances George Clooney 'Up in the Air'
If there's an actress that we should keep our eye on, it's Vera Farmiga. Over the last few years she's gone from The Manchurian Candidate, to Breaking and Entering, to The Departed, to The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. And now she gets to romance one of Hollywood's favorite leading men. Variety reports that Farmiga has signed on for Jason Reitman's Up in the Air -- the film that Twilight actress Anna Kendrick just signed onto.

Juno was a great movie. Maybe I'll be an extra then go watch it at the Galleria and show up in a limo.
After all, the movie that was shot in Benton Illinois, appropriately named "Poor White Trash," had their premier at the 2-screen Toler Cinema (now ran by Kerasotes), and all of the poor white trash...uhh..extras I mean, showed up in limos. Hilarity.

My wife and I were out with a group of friends this last Friday night when conversation came around about the George Clooney movie shooting in St. Louis. In under 15 seconds all of the women in the group (including my wife) were giggling like schoolgirls and discussing which places would be best to stake out to see him. This went on for quite a while and they all agreed that he'd probably stay at the Four Seasons and gamble at Lumiere Place. (My eyes still hurt from rolling them so many times.
)
I pointed out that every gold-digger and jersey chaser within 100 miles will be bringing their "A game" and doing the same thing.

He's a lucky man, that Clooney.
A movie like this often brings talent from LA, to avoid the apathetic interests of Missouri. Unless this is a live-action Disney film, you shouldn’t expect much support from the state. Still, the film-friendly director of Lambert Airport should be the one to thank for this air-travel film. That airport has done a lot for cinema in St. Louis.

Not many Airport directors can say they have an entire vacant terminal just begging to be filmed in.

Lambert was film friendly before it was "vacant".

If you would like to be an extra in the movie Up In The Air, check out http://www.missouribusiness.net/film/hotline.asp on Jan 16th for more info. According to the website, "Production begins in St. Louis in early March and will finish at the end of April". I wonder how many extras will be paid? I'd go for free food.

Co-worker told us that she auditioned in Crestwood to be an extra in a George Clooney movie to be shot in St. Louis, supposedly set in the 1940s or some such. All I've heard; any more?

I think you're like a month late. Did you miss all the hoopla in the papers and online?

Yeah, and there's a thread on it but not sure where at..

^ The thread talking about this movie is in the "St. Louis movie/cinema/production and news" in the Urban Living section. Its one of the main threads in the section.
This movie takes place in the 1940s? I thought it would be more current.

I'm pretty sure it's set in current time. My understanding was the Clooney is trying to reach 1000000 frequent flier miles or somesuchshit.
I was in the checkout lane at the Arsenal Schnucks and some little bubbleheaded 20 year old chick was calling everyone she knew on her iPhone. Apparently she had a reading earlier in the day with the director Jason Reitman for a 2 line part. I guess she felt the need to call her ex-boyfriend and tell him about it at the top of her lungs while in the store.
I wanted to show her my Glenn Ford pimp hand skills.

(In all seriousness I do not condone violence against women in any way shape or form.)

Thats what I heard about the plot. Frequent flier miles didn't come until the late '70s after deregulation of the airlines, AA I believe was the first one to create a frequent flier program.
As for the movie, I hope they use St. Louis in the movie and not use it as a stand in for another city as other movies have done.
where can I rent the Treatment?! any place in STL? i don't have netflix.
what other older movies were filmed here? besides the obvious, white palace, etc. I saw the great bank robbery. any others?

St. Louis is often a stand in for other cities, but plenty of films have taken place in St. Louis (although not shot here). Arlington Road, and One Night At McCools, are two examples.

The Hoodlum Priest is a B classic from 1961. True story about a St. Louis priest trying to rehabilitate ex-cons.

King of The Hill. I haven't seen it but I plan on seeing it sometime soon. It was filmed in '93 and they used a hotel on Kingshighway and Delmar. The name escapes me right now but the hotel has since been torn down. It's based on A.E. Hotchner's memoirs of the same name. I saw a piece on it today on Living in St. Louis. Looks like a solid film. Steven Soderbergh directed it and since I loved The Good German and period pieces I'm definitely going to check it out.
Unfortunately its not on DVD in the states yet. You can buy it region 2 from the UK, which I'll be doing.

Steven Soderbergh also recently shot a small portion of "The Informant" in St. Louis.

It looks like they will be filming at the Cheshire Inn this weekend. They had 20 Paramount Pictures semi-trucks parked outside Cheshire on Friday.
