I've been a huge fan of Animal Collective for almost 10 years now. So I was happy to find out the director of their video, "Summertime Clothes," was a St Louis native. Yes, they're off the wall, but that's why I love em.

While searching for a Lawrence Tierney movie to watch I came across something called THE HOODLUM PRIEST. It's a movie from 1961 with MANY shots of St. Louis.

It's about a priest (Father Charles "Dismas" Clark) who tries to help gangsters get it together. What's weird is that there's still a place on Cote Brilliante Ave. called the Dismas House.

Anyway, the movie is MINDBLOWING. Lots of jazz and taverns and steet stuff. The cinematographer is Haskell Wexler who went on to do some amazing work. It's streaming for free on Netflix and whatever.

HIGHLY recommended.

Absolutely! Forget Escape From New York; The Hoodlum Priest is the ultimate St. Louis grunge movie. And it's based on a true St. Louis story.

^ Towards the end of the movie the cops are chasing a suspect (Kier Dullea who played Dave in 2001: A Space Odyssey) who has ducked into an an abandoned house. It's got some great shots of a completely abandoned neighborhood. Same old houses you see nowadays. Same old boarded-up windows. FIFTY YEARS LATER.

Anyway, the cop radios to headquarters that he is chasing the suspect into the "Slum Clearance Zone". I noticed that the address spray painted on the house was 28xx. Wonder where that was at? I'm thinking around North Jefferson somwehere.

There's several scenes set in what's got to be the produce/vegetable warehouse area on the Near North riverfront area and another showing the Laclede Hotel. I never knew this movie existed.

The director was Irwin Kershner. He went on to direct EMPIRE STRIKES BACK so he was no hack. He's got another from 1958 called STAKEOUT ON DOPE STREET. That's gotta be good.

Probably the Mill Creek Valley. Roughly between Olive and Market, from Jefferson to Grand.

Yes it was Mill Creek Valley. Demo began in '59 and the movie was '61. The numero uno bad decision this town ever made and competition is fierce for the top spot.

Imagined conversation:

"What the hell is this?"

"Well, it's basically Brooklyn"

"Bulldoze it"

"OK but what do we do with all the people?"

"Well, we're bulldozing an area a mile away and building a group of brand spanking new buildings for them. We want to HELP them you understand...."

"But this where these folks eat and buy and sell food and everything they need?"

"Don't worry about it... we're rolling out a program that will make sure they will have food"

"OK, great"

Walter Williams, black man, is fairly famous for the following saying: The welfare state has done to Black Americans what even slavery couldn't do.... and that is to destroy the black family.

He's got a new autobiography out called UP FROM THE PROJECTS. I'm getting it. Here's alink to an interview.

^Good insight...

I'm not sure there are any perfect ways to fully integrate an entire race of people into a society that had so ignored and spit on them for generation after generation...

I know there are many burgeoning African American communities in areas like Atlanta, Philly, and other points...Our President is a minority...But something is still very clearly wrong when looking at the educational achievements, wealth and incarceration rates of certain groups of Americans...Plenty of blame to go around for everyone...But perfectly good and decent human beings are still being lost in large numbers, costing society much...

The easy and correct answer to the problem is strong families IMO...Something that gov'ts cannot create...But needs to figure out how to support and not destroy...

On "The Hoodlum Priest": The movie is about the Dismas House. Story behind the name is that Dismas is the criminal crucified next to Jesus. Dismas came to Jesus' defense against the barbs from the other crucified criminal next to them. After asking Him for forgiveness, Jesus told Dismas that (paraphrasing), "This very day, you will meet My Father in Heaven." The only person Jesus ever said would actually go to Heaven, Dismas is a role model for the Jesuits in helping the most downtrodden.

Adding in to the Jesuit background, part of that movie was filmed at SLUH, back around 1961 I think. They showed a football scrimmage (featuring my accountant's dad back when he was 17) and had some of the school's Jesuits in a scene or two. The world premiere was in StL, and the school's band played the opening. Not too shabby.

Fun movie, but hard to find copies of it.

What's thlatest on the "3 Nights in August" movie? IMDB shows Kevin Pollack attached and I think I heard something on the radio recently about Billy Bob Thornton wanting to get involved. Anyone hear anything about this? I guarantee that Nixon will free up those tax credits if this one ever gets into production -- wouldn't want to upset all those rabid Cardinal fans (see: voters).

Recently noticed multiple big budget films being shot in Pittsburgh. I'm sure it's tax incentives by the state, but such a small thing as having a local film office and a good website, St. Louis lacks right??

pics of The Dark Knight Rises being filmed in Pittsburhg... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/0 ... ml#s319452

The Next Three Days prominently pictured Pittsburgh as it's setting

Pittsburgh film office: http://www.pghfilm.org/

As far as I can tell, St Louis has no film office or even website. Only organization is the MO Film Commission, with an outdated, crappy website and just lost its funding, right? Seems like wouldn't cost much at all to have 1 staffer set up in a local film office, despite the lack of film incentives from the state.

Joint Body, which was recorded in ALton, as a previous poster mentioned, and other St. Louis/Metro-east locales is being previewed next Saturday, August 14th at the Tivoli. Should be interesting --- Mark Pellegrino and Alicia Witt palying an ex-con and a stripper, respectively.

America's got Talent, American Idol, etc, these shows are attracted to St Louis, not just because of the iconic skyline, but because it has the tendency to attract some amazing talent from the often looked over center of the country.

"America's Got Talent" has added a third episode featuring auditions taped in St. Louis. In addition to coverage in the season premiere, the NBC talent seach will focus on St. Louis on May 29 and again on June 12.
For Monday night's season premiere, including auditions in St. Louis and Los Angeles, KSDK ranked No. 1 in the country with a 10.1 rating in total households (127,000) and a 16 percent audience share, the station said Tuesday. In St. Louis, "AGT" was the highest-rated show of the night with viewers 18-49 by a mile (a 6.7 rating vs. 4.3) over No. 2 "How I Met Your Mother."
Because of the local connection, ratings for the season premiere were up from last year.
But nationally, according to Nielsen overnight ratings, viewership fell 33 percent from last season's premiere. Some 10.3 million people tuned in, versus 15.3 million last year.
Competition was tougher this year than last, with "AGT" taking on the next-to-last performance show of “Dancing with the Stars” on ABC and the season finales of "Bones" on Fox and “How I Met Your Mother,” plus the wedding episode of “Mike and Molly,” on CBS. Last year, it premiered after the broadcast season had ended.

Wilkinson got the inspiration for the story when he videotaped his walk across the abandoned Old Chain of Rocks Bridge over the Mississippi near St. Louis, only to find out later that two young women were murdered there in 1991.
Interesting. "Wilkinson" is referring to Eric Wilkinson, who co-wrote the script with Lynch.

Also, note this report from KSDK yesterday:

http://www.ksdk.com/news/article/322614 ... e-friendly
"I fell in love with the city. I can't believe how great St. Louis is," said Lynch.

And Lynch says working in St. Louis will be a boost to the local economy, bringing jobs and money everywhere they go.

But there's a problem. The city of St. Louis no longer has a Film Commission office. And Governor Nixon led the charge to cut funding to the Missouri Film Office.

Go ahead and consider this one dead, and with reason...

Funding for the movie was being done as part of a "Private Offering" which could only be made to "Accredited Investors" and/or "Qualified Purchasers". Basically, that means only people or legal entities (such as trusts) of a certain high-level financial standing could be told about the details of the "Offering", as such offerings involve strong risks. That also requires there being absolutely no public announcements of the "Offering", from amounts of monies sought to the business plan of the project.

When the news story was put together, its author apparently was told by the backers of the project that it was a "Private Offering" and to not publish any information on it, as doing so could put the entire project at significant risk (including putting the backers of the film at risk to SEC violations for making or allowing private offerings being made public knowledge). However, the Biz Journal made the information public anyways, thus compelling the organization behind the film to have to shut down fundraising. Raising money for independent films in this manner is common, especially as it normally wouldn't be subject to local business newspapers reporting on them so early. I guess the subject matter for the film was too much for the Biz Journal to not report on it, and sadly that's exactly what killed it.

Disclosure: My source for what I wrote is someone who was involved in the fundraising for the film. This source furthered what was reported by letting me know of other actors who were involved besides Pollock and Thornton... Let's just say that the actor lined up to play Tony LaRussa "abides".

Defiance

Now this looks pretty cool...

http://defiance.com/en/
http://www.trionworlds.com/en/games/defiance

Starting in April 2013, Syfy will start running the TV show Defiance, which will be both an interactive televised program and a computer game with online multiplayer involvement. It's set up for events on the show to influence what happens in the world of the game, and for how the game is played to have impact on future shows' scripts.

The Computer Game will be based in San Francisco.

The Television Program will be based in Saint Louis, or more to the point what remains after an alien invasion.

From the websites:
The Township of Defiance

After the Arkfall, the city of St. Louis was destroyed by aggressive terramorphing. Only the Gateway Arch and the tops of a few skyscrapers remain in the remade landscape, jutting from a valley surrounded by new-Earth mountains. This secure position drew the allied human and Votan settlers who would found Defiance.

Taking shelter in the exposed skyscrapers, the founders quickly discovered that the surrounding mountains were rich with Votan ore. As word spread, opportunists came flooding to the city, building as fast as they could using any materials they could find. Walking down Main Street in Defiance, visitors might see a storefront of rough-cut lumber next to a home made from pieces of Ark wreckage.

Life is not always (or often) safe under the Arch, and the city faces horrific threats from the outside and within. But human and Votan alike, the people of Defiance stand united to show the world that peace and cooperation are the gateway to civilization’s future. The town has quickly become a symbol of hope in this new frontier.
Source: http://www.trionworlds.com/en/games/defiance

The creators of the show includes the team behind Battlestar Galactica, and the cast looks pretty good. This is definitely a new format for video games and TV shows interacting with each other, but it sure looks like it could be the foundation for a strong subculture fanbase, which are usually quite loyal, and it could really put STL back on the pop culture map.

Check out the Youtube video and some of these pictures of what's left of STL after the aliens came through... really intersting.

Imagine how cool it would have been to announce last night, after the All Star Game & his last managerial start, that Tony LaRussa would live on through a recent Best Actor Oscar winner (sorry, Alex, not Eddie Murphy, not since about '87). But yes, "The Dude Abides" to being the Cards' manager, or at least would have. Our collective loss.

Jennifer Lynch, daughter of David, will direct a movie in Saint Louis called "Falling from Grace". Tim Roth will star. Filming will begin the falll, maybe sooner. The producers say Saint Louis will be showcased like never before (saw them on some morning show). It's about a detective chasing a mysterious serial killer of young girls.

http://www.stltoday.com/entertainment/m ... 0f31a.html

Producers mentioned how Jason Reitman (Up in the Air) said there are about "16 different kinds of cities in St. Louis".

It was only a matter of time before somebody came to their senses and realized St. Louis can be an amazing place to film a movie. Incredibly unique in some places.

On a personal note, I'm shelving my gritty screenplay about redemption, alcoholism, drug abuse, sexual dysfunction and violence called "South City" until someone comes forward with 2.5 million dollars.
