Yeah, Florida in general has a lot of natural beauty, which is why it's so hard for me to see it booming with more and more people. Jacksonville used to feel like the 2nd largest city in Georgia, but it's feeling more like another Tampa every day. Red brick and moss-draped oaks are being outnumbered by pastels and palmettos. St. Augustine is turning into an outer suburb of Jax.

It's pretty sad when "inside information" is knowing where all the last few undeveloped beachfronts are located. I mean, in the whole state.

Hi all.

Lived in the St. Louis area all my life - grew up in West St. Louis Co, and now make my home in the Affton area. Been a big supporter of the revitilization of the city, and was thrilled to find a resource like this site.

Will by lurking mostly, as I doubt I can add much to the wealth of information already here. But I will post when I can.

Grad school brought me here. Grew up in the suburbs, as well as in Texas and Europe. Just stumbled across this site - and its incredibly full of great info. Probably will do more reading then replying.

I am living in south city, and absolutely adore almost every part of the city. Although there is tons for me to still explore.

So, what brings you here?

New Member...

Just registered...but have been lurking for a couple of years now...starting from the time that the Bottle District Buzz started. From there, I did some searching on the net and found the skyscraper site...and from that site I somehow stumbled upon this place. Been lurking ever since. :)

I have been an Architecture-Phile for many years... mostly interested in downtowns...skyscrapers, etc... It's ironic that... I don't really care for heights...and wouldn't want to necessarily work in huge buildings, lol...but they are awesome to look at. I'm more interested in the exterior visuals, the design and size, as opposed to functionality (the stuff that no one really sees or cares about except for the people working in such buildings lol). I like collecting photos of different skylines.

The downtowns of big cities, in a way defines the town....sets the personality of it...and drives future development and interests in the city.

By the time I was in my mid teens I probably had 30 or 40 cities memorized (based on their skylines)..... like most other folks here I suppose.

Originally from the University City area (now in Affton)...but being from a military family I lived in various other locations as a youngster... (glad I got to see other places). I've been to most major cities east of the Mississippi....even if it was just driving through on the Interestate or going through the Airports... Haven't been able to travel recently though.

What school did I go to??? Went to Delmar Harvard for my early education...did one year at Wellston Elementary school when I lived there...then left the area in 1984. I didn't go to High school in the area.

Returned in the early-mid 90's & stayed in the area. Just finished a Masters from Webster.... (not technical related)...and I hope to start working on another Masters degree soon. Would like to go to Washington University. Unfortunately I have to wait to make that decision.

Interesting to see sites like these.... Good to see i'm not the only one intrigued by this stuff.

I've been posting at this site for a while and will say this site is a wonderful resource. Thank you.

1) I bought a condo at the Park East Tower, so I am crazy interested in anything having to do with St. Louis real estate right now

2) Grew up and still living in New York City, but I spent 8 years in St. Louis attending wash u undergrad and law school

3) 34

4) Tax attorney for a trust and estates law firm in New York--although I also do tax returns in case anybody is looking for someone (self-serving plug there, hope nobody minds).

5) High school in New York so I'm sure nobody cares. That question still facinates me.

Hey Scrutinizer,

Enjoyed many of your posts btw.

My future in St. Louis is uncertain right now. If I find the right job there I will move there permanently but in the meantime it will be more of a vacation home/investment. I will probably rent out two of the other rooms to help pay for the bills.

I have a lot of friends in St. Louis and a business partner there who I would like to see more often.

What I miss most about St. Louis is ironically what some people dislike about the city. I like going to the same few spots over and over again and knowing most of people in there. I also enjoy $5 drinks versus $18 drinks, not that St. Louis doesn't have its share of those places as well. I am actually amazed by the changes in the last 3-4 years, especially in the downtown area.

St. Louis to me is like a stock that has been beaten up for so long that it is just an amazing value. The fact that so many outsiders know so little about St. Louis just reinforces that feeling. When St. Louis becomes prominent again like Atlanta after the Olympics or South Beach (it was dead for a while), I want to be there to cash in. When you think about the history of St. Louis, e.g. the Rat Pack @ The Chase hotel, it's amazing to think about the possibilities for the future.

I think given the cost of living, St. Louis has a tremendous amount to offer and I'd like to think that one day soon a lot more people will know that.

^ Excellent, I only charge $15,000 a return. Prices are a bit inflated to pay for the equally inflated apartment upgrades.

Each lightbulb or switch costs like $100. I got the feeling from Opus that union rates are somewhat responsible for the high labor costs. I don't know much about unions except they stick a big inflatable rat in front of buildings that don't use union workers here in New York.

It's quite a sight. I'll keep the rest of my opinions to myself while they are still working on my apartment.

Sounds reasonable. I'll go ahead and sell my car to cover your fees. Just get me a refund of, say $50k, and we'll be in business.

Yeah the developers really love to jack up the prices on the upgrades. The unions are mosly to blame, but I also noticed that usually there is a fair develeoper mark up as well. I found a way around paying the inflated prices on some things, but I had to bit the bullet on quite a few others.

I think when you consider the installation and the fact that it's all happening BEFORE you move in, it's probably worth the premium--unless you're real handy and could have done the work yourself. Even if you can get each item or upgrade cheaper, you would have to bring somebody in for installation and what if there is a problem? When the developer is responsible for everything, I think it's easier to point out what didn't come out right and get it fixed without too much of a fuss, i.e. punch list. After all, since what they really want to sell you is the loft or apartment, they aren't going to go ballistic over a chipped counter top. But if you get that counter top from Mr. X and Mr. X's entire profit is hanging on that slab, he may not be so ready to exchange it. So maybe the premium we pay is like a bit of insurance. I'm totally for that.

Can't stand Myspace. I only use Facebook. You don't get as many people with access and the problems that can come with that, and people aren't allowed to make their own horrible designs for the profiles. I think half the pages on myspace are stuck in the mid 90's. [/rant]

BTW, not directed to you. Your page looks just fine.
