about me: Born in Texas, raised in west STL County, civil engineering student at University of Missouri - Rolla. Love buildings developments and transportation systems.
I don't remember how I found this site, but I think it was a link from builtstlouis.
I'm from northwest county originally, but have lived in various parts of the area including Maryland Hts, St. Charles, and South City. After living in South City, I knew that I never wanted to go back to the 'burbs!
31, going on 13.
I'm a project manager.
I attended Incarnate Word Academy.

Hi, I'm new here.
I'm from PA originally, lived in CA for a while, and got my first job offer (after grad school) in St. Louis last July. The apartment my girlfriend and I chose (for some reason we still can't quite figure out) is in Maryland Heights, but we've decided when our lease is up that we're moving closer to the downtown.
Found this site looking for a place to live downtown. I enjoy the pictures and the commentary, the ideas and the history. You can learn a lot about St. Louis pretty quickly here.
Thank you all.

Alex,
Welcome. I hope you have a lot of luck looking for places to live in the city. This is a pretty good place to find where you want to live.

One thing that doesn't help, and many rustbelt cities are like this too, is the view from the highway. People going down to a game driving along 64/40 see rail yards and shut up warehouses and what's that giant thing on the north side of 40 between Grand and Kingshighway a grain silo? Not the best view. They go to the game and can't wait to leave. Maybe Ballpark village will get them to stick around longer. Maybe Lake Choteau will make for a nicer view. But people just driving through get the worst view of the city. There is so much to do and see just out of view, but getting people out of their lifetime routine is really difficult. At least it's all moving in the right direction and for that we can be thankful.
Hope I'm doing this right--quoting Stellar's post from the STL Negative Perceptions thread, which really rang true.
When I first saw STL it was from I-44 and I thought the place was a dump. Other trips via I-70 seemed to confirm it. Although I now realize most cities dont put their best next to a highway, those negative perceptions almost caused me to rule out a grad school offer. Im glad I flew out for a look (money talks, doesnt it?) because I fell in love with the Lou that very first weekend.
I grew up in CT and have lived all over the country in different settings (urban, megopolis, suburban, rural), but STL has everything anyone could want hands-down as far as Im concerned. Its beautiful and has been my "home" for years--blemishes and all--even when I havent lived there.
I was amazed to find this site and learn about all the great things that are happening. I used to jokingly say, "Im STL's biggest fan," hence the username, because I thought I was the only one that felt it has so much unrealized potential.
Unfortunately Ive bounced around alot because of work (higher ed). After returning for 2 years and now being away again for 7, I really want to make one final move--and thats back to the Lou for good. As they say, home is where the heart is.

^Kudos to you, Dan. It's not often that someone is open minded enough to let go of their negative first (and 2nd, and 3rd...) impression(s) and fall in love with a city in just one weekend. Hope to see you return soon...
Wow, that's a beautiful testimonial, STLbiggestfan!
I think St. Louis gets in your bones after a while, and even if you're not from here, it is one of those unique places that people always feel a close connection with.
Which begs the question... Why hasn't Hollywood discovered St. Louis as a setting for more movies??? Not as a double for somewhere else, but actually capturing the real St. Louis in all its uniqueness. It's gorgeous, affordable, packed with character. Think how gorgeous this old mama would look on the big screen...

So, what brings you here? There's a tremendous shortage of info about what's really going on in St. Louis via the mainstream media . . . so thought I'd wander around here for a bit.
What part of the STL are you from? Grew up in Florissant but have lived in the City for the last 8 years (minus a 14-month stint in Australia)
How old are you? 32
What do you do, or study? Run a little record label
(The Ultimate St Louis "Get to Know You" question) What High School did you go to ? Hazelwood Central
Post photos if you want.

I've posted here for a while, but never found my way to this thread.
So, what brings you here? Been following the loft scene downtown for about 3-4 years now.
What part of the STL are you from? Born at Grand & Alberta, but moved to South County as a baby. Grew up in and around Telegraph & 270, and have lived in and around 21 & Lindbergh the past 20 years. Moving to The Meridian in the fall.
How old are you? 46
What do you do, or study? I "do" software. I've "studied" lots of things.
(The Ultimate St Louis "Get to Know You" question) What High School did you go to ? I graduated 28 years ago. It's not relevant. I like to live in the present. Ask me something more interesting.

I just wanted to become part of this group of individuals who is very much into what is going on in St. Louis, especially the downtown area of the city. I am 51 years old, retired military(AF), am presently living in Mechanicsburg, Pa., because my job transferred me from St. Louis working at the military installation on Goodfellow to Mechanicsburg working at a military installation as a government contractor. I support the Department of Defense(DoD) and other Federal Agencies, to include all Military Branches of Service giving DoD and other Federal agencies mainframe computer support all over the world.
Jeff Konkel - thanks for the music. Creativity makes St. Louis interesting.
Loyalist & StLBiggestFan, welcome. Join the crowd....there seems to be plenty of St. Louis fans living back east.
Central Scrutinizer - 28 years? Time flies, doesn't it? We have that in common.

So, what brings you here?
My wife and I lived in Chicago, then moved to Champaign, IL for college where we both studied Computer Science, and my wife went on to law school. After she graduated, we both got job offers in STL. After touring several STL neighborhoods (Lafayette Sq., Tower Grove, Soulard, CWE) and Forest Park, we knew this was a city we could love. At first, my wife and I decided this would be a temporary move, as we missed family and friends in Chicago. But now we have grown attached to enjoy the friendly people, architecture and "grittiness" of the city. We decided to make STL our permanent home and built a house in Gaslight Square.
What part of the STL are you from?
We lived in a loft at 2020 Washington for 1.5 years, now Gaslight Square.

What do you do, or study?
I'm a software engineer at Reuters in Creve Coeur. I'm working on my M.S. in Computer Science at UMSL.

Born and bred in St. Louis. Don't know that I'll always be here, but it will always be home. I love St. Louis's 'old city' charm and culture, and I realize we've missed some good opportunities. Many people don't seem to realize the assets we have. I want to do my part to make StL the best place it can be, and it's great to learn from and talk with the other folks here about what they see going on in town.
What part of the STL are you from?
Born in Kirkwood, raised mainly in Florissant. I've also lived in Fenton, Jefferson county (not my fault - I was 3 years old!), St. Charles county, Maryland Heights, the Central West End (the Park Royal and then Towne House), and currently Hazelwood. I'm at a point where I'm ready to buy a house or condo. I would love to be back in the CWE, but only want to spend about $200K. I'll probably end up in U City, Olivette, or the eastern side of Creve Coeur.
How old are you?
32
What do you do, or study?
I work in corporate communication for a major corporation headquartered in StL. I received a BA in communication from UMSL, and am just about done (May 20) with an MA in comm. from SLU.

McCluer North in Florissant - go Stars!

Hey Jeff,
32, and rival schools! That was back in the day when we could brag that we had air conditioning and you guys didn't!

Loyalist,
The old military complex at 70 and Goodfellow always fascinated me as a kid! So tell us, what is the deal with that roof on the main building?

Interesting to mention the grain elevator / processing mill on 64/40. Yeah, it's hideous and out of place, but keep in mind that stretch of the highway was a slice of industrial area before the residential, university, and research communities built up around it. Also, before St. Louis was industrial it was a transport terminal for barge commodity traffic. I-70 has even more grain elevators along it. I don't think they are attractive, but they help remind us of St. Louis's roots and how important the city was/is to transporting wheat, corn, and other commodities around the nation.

Tysalpa - The warehouse was the munitions facility which you may already be aware of. As far as the roof, I honestly don't know. It would be great to completely renovate it inside and out and turn that warehouse into something the city could benefit from. Maybe turn into something similar to the main shed at Union Station downtown, and put residential units around it as well as other businesses, restaurants and other entertainment venues.

Thanks Shannon and STLgasm for the warm welcome. I think Hollywood should discover St. Louis in its natural form for movies. Baltimore, for example, has had great success with the entertainment industry.

So, what brings you here?
I've always been interested in old cities, and after reading a number of books about urban history it dawned on me that I live in one of the most interesting in the United States. You simply can't pick up any book about urban America that doesn't have St. Louis all over it. Check out the link in my sig. I love this city so much, STLgasm and I even started a company promoting it!
