So, what brings you here? I got interested in St. Louis while I was looking for housing here last summer. Some of the neighborhoods here completely floored me and I've been exploring the city ever since.

What part of the STL are you from? I grew up in the Signal Hill area near Belleville, went to Mizzou and now live near the Compton Hill Reservoir.

How old are you? 22

What do you do, or study? I am a medical student at SLU

(The Ultimate St Louis "Get to Know You" question) What High School did you go to ? Belleville West

I've been on this forum before, but I didn't post much under my old name (Pierre Laclede- my psuedonym on STLtoday.com forums, where I rarely post anymore for a variety of reasons). So I thought I'd introduce myself and start participating more in this forum under the name ThreeOneFour, which I use on the Skyscraper Page forums.

My real name is Matthew, so when I looked here and realized there are at least 348 urban-minded Saint Louisans named Matt already on the forum, I knew a psuedonym related to my real name was out of the question!

So, what brings you here? As someone that grew up one hour south of Saint Louis, I've always been fascinated with Saint Louis, particularly its neighborhoods, architecture, and parks. Now that I've lived in the city for almost three years, I appreciate it more than ever. And discussion here is generally positive, and people are much more informed about city living than the majority of forumers at STLtoday.com.

What part of the STL are you from? I'm currently living in Carondelet- my wife and I just bought our first home almost one year ago. Prior to that, we lived in a Holly Hills apartment for two years.

In order, the places where I've lived:

- Belleville: I was born there, it's a great place, my parents left too soon!

- Poplar Bluff: thankfully, I was too young to remember much

- Farmington: In short, I thought it was h*ll on earth.

- Cape Girardeau: Just ignore the Dittoheads- it's really a nice town!

- Maryland Heights: I thought I had to live "close to work". Big mistake.

- South County: I repeated the same mistake I listed above!

- South Saint Louis: It took too long, but now I'm where I want to be!

How old are you? 31...my birthday is October 27.

What do you do, or study? I worked in insurance and banking after getting my communications degree at Southeast Missouri State. After I was "downsized", I settled into my present position as a substitute and assistant teacher at a South County elementary school. I'm returning to school this summer to get my masters degree in nonprofit management at Washington University.

The Ultimate St Louis "Get to Know You" question) What High School did you go to ? Ugh, do I have to answer? Okay: Farmington.

Welcome, 314. Glad you decided to be more active here. You're on SSP too, I remember the Farmington angle (went to MAC for JUCO).

Citylover and Trent- thank you very much for the welcome!

I didn't make much use of my first Urban St. Louis account, but I figure I will this time since so many SSP forumers from Saint Louis seem to spend the majority of time here these days. And yes, Trent, I remember our discussion of your juco days at Mineral Area!

The SSP Midwest forum seems to have died down a little. Not as many St. Louis forumers there, or at least they aren't there as frequently. And the other Midwestern city that I visit the most and know the most about besides STL- Kansas City- seems to have fewer representatives there as well these days. When I'm there, I'm usually at Skybar, talking about cars, music, movies, and other interests.

I should've started posting here much sooner!

I don't spend a lot of time at SSP anymore either now that this forum has really gotten going in the last six months.

So, what brings you here?

I just moved to St Louis about six months ago from Milwaukee, WI. We came here because my husband is studying at Concordia Seminary. Here we are for a few years; then only God knows where! So far, I've found St Louis to be fascinating. Before moving here, my impression was that it's "like Milwaukee, only bigger -- even a common major industry: brewing!" Wow. I couldn't have been more wrong! The more I learn about this city, the more I realize how unique it truly is. I've always been interested in the history of places, and as an effort to adopt STL as my new current home, I'm trying to learn as much as possible in the time I have here.

What part of the STL are you from?

Live in Maplewood, work in the Central West End, attend church in Hyde Park.

How old are you?

26

What do you do, or study?

I'm a graphic designer.

(The Ultimate St Louis "Get to Know You" question) What High School did you go to ?

Not really so important, since I didn't grow up here, is it? :)

If we had stayed in St. Louis instead of moving I would've gone to Rockwood Summit High in the Fenton Area. Any of you guys go there?

Hello, all. Here is my story:

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. However, my grandfather was originally from St. Louis, so my entire family was raised to be huge Cardinal fans. Therefore, I've always had a soft spot for St. Louis. I completely fell in love with it during my first stay there, which is when my parents took me to my first Cardinal game at Busch.

After bouncing around and taking college courses at a couple of different schools, I decided to move to St. Louis and attend UMSL. I stayed at their brand new (at the time) campus apartments. A year or so later, I moved in with my girlfriend out in west county.

Being used to a city that always had something going on, I was always upset by how little there was to do in St. Louis. I discovered builtstlouis.net, and started to become obsessed with the history and architecture of St. Louis. Nothing makes me more upset than thinking about how Chicago stole all of the thunder and became the metropolis that St. Louis should have been. The most sickening thing is seeing how much of St. Louis has been destroyed for parking and other wasted space.

Yet, there is enough revitalization going on to keep enough of the landscape extremely fascinating. I have always maintained that Chicago is the most over-rated city in the country. Its older architecture doesn't even come close to comparing to the magnificent look of St. Louis (and what's left of it). Chicago has so much more; if St. Louis didn't destroy such a vast amount, more people would see that the people who built this city began BEFORE Chicago built its metropolis, and provided more innovative structures.

I moved back to Chicago to finish school (while my girlfriend does the same at SLU). I finally graduate at the end of the year, and can not wait to move back to my favorite city. We are both in agreement that we refuse to live anywhere outside of St. Louis city limits. We plan on starting out in a restored loft or condo.

I am so glad I discovered this site. I am using it to learn as much as I can about living in the historical districts. I want to find out about the best urban areas to live in. I will continue to research this board, and hope to ask questions as my time gets closer and closer to moving back to where I call home. (I visit every six weeks)

Living in Chicago and St. Louis has led me to this conclusion: Chicago is a great place to visit, but St. Louis is the place to live. Most people in Chicago think I'm crazy, but to me, St. Louis is my little paradise.

See and this is from someone from Chicago. St. Louis is so much better.

I just hope he isn't a Cubs fan :x

No way! I'm a HUGE St. Louis Cardinals fan! I am so thankful to have had a grandfather from St. Louis. He moved to Chicago during the Depression, but made sure each generation on down was raised to be Cardinal fans!

Chicago really does have a nasty attitude about St. Louis. I get so sick of it. Chicago has great food and an excellent night life, making it a great place to visit...but no place makes me as happy as St. Louis. It's my favorite place to live, and I can't wait to get back!!

I concur that Chicago is a great place to visit (too BIG for me to live there) while St. Louis is the place to be! I won't really comment on the Cardinals yet since I grew up in a house where both the Cubs and the Bears were the gospel. I am a Rams fan -- I lived here when the city "won" the franchise! I did buy a Cardinals throw for my condo though so hopefully that buys me some brownie points with the diehards! 8)

coachjw... if i werent a man i probably wouldn't want to kiss you but i would say that you are awesome. The Rams are the best and so are the Cardinals. St. Louis is the best place for sports. I was extremely surprised when STL got a franchise from LA. talk about going from big to small. La was like 3 times the size of St. Louis back in the mid 90's.

Yeah, it's not even the size of the city....I actually wish St. Louis was bigger......it's mainly the atmosphere that just feels so right in St. Louis. ...and of course the history and architecture!!!

By the way, I'll try to forgive you for liking the Cubs and/or Bears.....my two most hated teams....!!!

I realized that I have not posted on this yet...so here it goes. (Note: Considering I'm answering this on a Friday night when most won't read it until tomorrow am/pm should tell everyone something about my social life...)

So, what brings you here? Got interested when it was Rising St Louis as a lurker and followed over to here. Don't post that much, but still read everyones thoughts several times a day. I love STL and want the city to be what it should be...again. A great midwestern city with varied ammenities and attractions at a price that everyone can afford.

What part of the STL are you from? From my name, I'm in midcounty, Rock Hill to be exact.

How old are you? The year I turn thirty. 3-0...I've been working out more, eating better, exercising....I don't like that idea so well.

What do you do, or study? I work for one of the major brokerage firms in St Louis

(The Ultimate St Louis "Get to Know You" question) What High School did you go to ? Grew up in Central Illinois, so I don't think I apply....sorry.

what brings you here? friends and the Cardinals: I went to school in Springfield, Mo at SMS and a lot of my friends were originally from St Louis. After I graduated it seemed like the normal thing to do, move to St Louis, explore the city, go to a game at Busch Stadium.

What part of the STL are you from? Used to live in South city, South Grandish, now downtown.

How old are you? 28

What do you do, or study? I graduated with an BA in Mass Media production/French. I am currently taking care of my 7 month old son and helping with our webdesign company www.stlwebpro.com.
