If they screw this up, chalk it up next to the many other screw-ups and lost opportunities in Missouri and the St. Louis area. Maybe we can forget about Air-cargo and bring back steam ships on the rivers. Who needs air and rail..who needs all of the development and tax revenue generated from this project. I am SO tired of the politicians in Jeff City not being willing to take a risk. They seem so stubborn and close-minded to change. Get with the program or some other State will jump on this opportunity and leave Missouri and St. Louis in the dust.
I fear that the tax credit and local control bill is going to be dead in the water. If the bill dies our efforts of attracting a China Cargo Hub will likely be dead also. smh

^^ Yes, perhaps STL can marketed as a 1960's city - kind of the pioneer village of today.

Guess that Friday the 13th really does feel unlucky right about now. Glad I'm not superstitious...
As tense as so many of us are right now, perhaps we should take a deep breath and not watch the Legislature jockey each other for position. I'd think that this is a whole lot of posturing going on right now, with a few House Reps & Senators acting in scary self-interested ways, but not representing the actions or intentions of the majority, who understand what they're there to do. As scary as the newspaper articles appear to be, I hope that it's just some posturing stuffed shirts puffing their chests out making things look scary, or it's the newspapers themselves wanting to have incendiary story titles to get increased readership.
But should this Legislature fail, it'll be due to sabotage on both sides of the aisles:
- Left: Not budging on tax credits for poor people's rent, and some in the City who're scared of certain other Left politicians who'd stand to gain power or prestige should this pass (i.e. internal party squabbling).
- Right: Philosophically standing in the way of utilizing tax revenues towards industrial investment out of a misunderstanding of Adam Smith, viewing proactive investment as subsidy. Or: Outstate no-nothingism.
Remember: Watching laws being made is like watching sausages being made...
(Crap like this is why I left for the pure private sector in the first place.)

Any chance the gov will call a special session for the tax credit bill?
I think you just offered one of the solutions that Gov Nixon can propose to get out of the quagmire. I think he has enough justification with the planned China delegation visit on May 23rd to call for a special session on Monday or Tuesday.south compton wrote:Any chance the gov will call a special session for the tax credit bill?
The second option for state rep leadership, simplify and trade some HTC credits in exchange for Aerotropolis as a wash and leave the reform fight for another day.
Of course, I suspect that most of us would prefer a grand compromise by end of day that favors House version (higher HTC cap then what Senate proposed and Data Center tax incentives), grudginly accept a simple tax credit swap between HTC and Aerotropolis and don't think much of leadership to see state reps back in Jeff City come Monday let alone by May 23rd

A special session on tax credits is quite possible... Nixon called one last year to get the Ford Plant incentives for Kansas City. But if there is one I wouldn't expect it until after Memorial Day.
I don't think these people realize just how devastating this is:

Considering what Gov Nixon did for Ford and KC, this has to be one of the most dissappointing comments to read latelyColby wrote:I don't think these people realize just how devastating this is:

The demise of the economic development bill led some to urge Gov. Jay Nixon to call a special legislative session this summer, especially to reconsider the $360 million in tax credits aimed at nurturing a China hub at Lambert.
Nixon said, for the moment at least, he doesn't see enough consensus on the Aerotroplis bill to warrant a special session.
"We're not going to call folks into a special session to have a taxpayer funded debating society," Nixon said.
agreed. I usually have quite a bit to say, but I'm pretty much speechless at the moment
actually, I'd have to say that this is my favorite quote:
"As far as I know, there wasn't really any opposition to the bill, in terms of merit," Slay said. "It was used as a pawn."

also, our plan b is to rely on Rex Sinquefield? Isn't he the guy who funds the Show-Me Institute? They were more adamantly against the bill than anyone. Am I missing something?
Are only hope may be a special session.
Nixon says he is up for it if consensus is made. Hopefully the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and other big wigs can lean on legislators to make a deal, because right now our prospects of being a Cargo Hub are not looking good. With the Chinese coming on May 23 this may get ugly.

I'm becoming more and more of a Democrat all the time. What a petty, short-sighted, worthless state government we have.
Sometimes three years of work (on the China Hub) does not overcome political agendas.goat314 wrote:Are only hope may be a special session.

Let's hope this time it does, but it's not looking good.
I wish we could have a recall session and vote them all out before November 2012. 18 months is too long to wait.
If we are going to keep this thread alive, I suppose we should rename it.

I'm from a rural area so it's probably some of my own representatives doing this. I don't understand any logical reason to block it. They're just playing politics.
Interestingly, many politicians claim to be Christians, but I'm not so sure. What Christian would put their own desires above that of the state as a whole? Isn't that called being selfish?
Slimy people. All of them.

I'm sure they're more competent than, say, North Korea or Ethiopia. Compared to the rest of the states, they are pretty incompetent, though.Colby wrote:If we are going to keep this thread alive, I suppose we should rename it.

Off topic, but more proof of the idiocy that consumes Jeff City. I'm glad they found the time to debate and pass a bill regarding a right we all currently possess. trust me, we all have the right to pray in public spaces. not that one needs a law degree to understand this, but i just finished my First Amendment Law final exam, so i could go on forever. However, again, I'm speechless. How the hell did this pass but the China hub bill didn't?!? What!!!???

Count, is there any chance this happens without these incentives?

Ugh!
Enough talk of re-entering the county. I want to secede from the state!

Can we start an petition of some sort? Or do something else that could be more effective?
This is such a crock!

I'm new around here, so forgive me if this has already been posted, but I think McClellan's piece on secession is pretty awesome:

is there any chance the Chinese will hang on a little longer until congress resumes? I know they need the tax incentives but its not like this bill has failed time and time again. Essentially, what are the chances of another shot if there isn't a special session?

http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/news ... -pass.htmlMayor Slay said "Fortunately, we have another option. We will pursue it with as much energy and vigor as we can."
He did not elaborate.
