This might be a stretch for some, but Washington Avenue, in my opinion, is slowly turning into St. Louis' version of a mini-Times Square. The National Blues Museum will add a much needed major attraction. There just needs to be more themed restaurants and bars - currently not in Missouri. Like this one.

Also, it would be nice if Coolfire Media and Stifel could put digital media boards on the strip. How about on this bland U.S. Bank garage?

And how about adding interactive game plazas where U.S. Bank's North Plaza currently sits and on the MX south plaza on Locust. These digital game plazas would invite passerbys to interact with various fixed digital game exhibits similar to interactive games seen at Lambert-International, but on a more pedestrian level and scale.

No!!! Please no themed restaurants. That's what BPV is for. Keep Wash Ave local and authentic.

I know "chain" and "themed" are "bad" words, but like it or not theme restaurants draw people. For example, I think an Aquarium Restaurant would be a great draw for locals and tourists alike.

I am not suggesting lining the whole street with them at all. Just a few. Keep in mind the Loop tried to stay away from chain and theme restaurants, but a few are there.

I think "Times Square" is the analogy used by the MX developer more than once. I'd expect some of what you suggest to happen.

Well that is definitely the direction the street is heading. I hope they read my suggestion about the tech plazas. The plazas would help get rid of dead space faster. I should put the idea on RallySTL. Plus, I hope more start-up tech companies land on the Washinton Avenue strip too. Outside of Chicago no other street in the Midwest would be as diverse - lofts, tech, entertainment, business, banking, hotels, restaurants, bars, museum/galleries etc.

Street parking and a new streetscape here and towards the Arch would help too - and it's coming.

I've always thought electric billboards were going to be part of the mxstl per older renderings. Wash Ave should definitely go with the neon district times square look. Electric billboards can be seen all over downtown ny, chicago, la, and san fran and they just make a place look more cosmopolitan and big city. Could also provide ad revenue to some garages.

True. Not only that, they add visual stimulation and vibrancy. Downtown Minneapolis and Denver have a few as well. The MX Movies sign is a very good start. The strip shouldn't be inundated with them, but the level of vibrancy they add is undeniable.

In regards to the interactive (touchscreen) plazas, they are showing up in various parts of the world - especially Asia. Here's a video<----- of the touchscreen games at Lambert. And below is sample photo of a touch screen monitor somewhere in the world.

^To me, it seems like the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis/CID should be able to put a few of these on the streets downtown - Market St., Washington Avenue, Olive St. and Broadway.

Agree. We need flashy billboards, big TV screens, scrolling news banners, etc all over the place. Not only downtown but some of our attractive corridors could use them as well.

I think his comments make a lot of sense. Hopefully, the movers and shakers of Ballpark Village and 7th Street between the two nodes will share some of his views and be willing to take collaborative actions/make collaborative investments.

However, the Cardinals & Cordish are unlikely to be supporters of such an effort, since such development could benefit businesses other than themselves.

This place has been absolutely killing it. Expect a 10min wait at lunch. And they're open until midnight some nights. Support this place for having the sense to stay open late.

The First Robotics competition is a massive boon to downtown. Guy at Snarfs told me they did over $10k revenue over a 2 day period last week. That's a lot of $5 subs.

I'd be very curious too to see how that stat shakes out this next season. Maybe I'm pigeonhole-ing, but Rams fans don't seem like the type who like to experience downtown St. Louis (read: go anywhere besides their car, the EJD entrance and maybe the casino...) on game days.

^ Well, more charitably, I would say that fans are watching a 3hr+ game and may tailgate before, but aren't so likely spend a half day downtown or grab a meal. Of course many do, but it's 50K people all at once. Conferences keep people there all day for several days.

Snarf's rocks. With it and Monty's both just seconds from my door I have had no lack of sandwich options lately. I've noticed Monty's has been open pretty much every Saturday for the last many, many weeks as well. Good stuff.

I think your right on. Tailgating is such a huge part of the NFL game day experience because tailgating in some respects can be a cheap alternative (everybody chips in a little for parking, load the grill and put the brats, beers and in the cooler and your good to go) to the typically higher priced game day tickets unlike baseball, hockey, or even getting a soccer specific stadium downtown where fans might have a few more bucks left in their pockets and are more likley patronize their favorite bar stool and/or restaruant before or after games. That is why I think a new riverfront stadium or at least a Fenton site is so much better then trying to build next door on the bottleworks site when fans at the end of day want a good tailgate spot surrounded by more tailgaters where as downtwon/CVC should be finding ways to help things become more active in the immediate area in and around the convention space year around.

To get back to the thread, getting as much residential and office development around the civic center only helps MX/Wash Ave businesses remain strong.

As a Rams fan, I am often surprised that so many food places are closed downtown on Sunday for lunch and after the game. I assumed they just support the downtown business crowd and don't seem to pay attentions to when the Rams games are even scheduled. Some that are open are often surprised by the crowd and hence understaffed.

^ I've had restaurant owners tell me that it's simply too difficult to staff up for 8 days a year. It's not worth trying to get the extra servers, bartenders, etc.

We ate there the other night (before catching 42 at MX Movies) and were discussing what a great option Snarfs would be for pre-Rams game breakfast. They serve beer and their breakfast sandwiches are awesome. I recommend the steak and egg.
