I talked to someone that works near the new movie theater and they said it won't open until January. I then looked in the door and saw the theater lobby, the drywall is hung, but a lot of mudding still needs to be completed. So January seems appropriate.
Quote from a recent story in the Post about the newest technology in film projection:
"Harman Moseley of St. Louis Cinemas said he hopes to have HFR projectors installed at his new MX Cinema when it opens downtown later this month."

It looks like opening day for the theater is Friday, January 18th.

Opening night. Good times.
The MX's website: http://www.stlouiscinemas.com/MX/NowPlaying.aspx
STLtoday.com article on the opening and the theater itself: http://www.stltoday.com/entertainment/m ... c04bc.html
The dining approach for the theater looks great. The theater itself does, too.
As for the opening lineup:
Django Unchained
Le Miz
Lincoln

Do these people think suburbanites will be driving to the city to catch a movie here? I think they will go to the one closest to their home. I think St. Louisans and DT residents will be the ones keeping this place open. Thoughts?“There are many nice theaters in the county, including some that have converted to table service, so we have to offer something special to the 90,000 people who work downtown but live in the county.”

I think visitors, convention goers, vacationers and near-downtown residents will be important. It's hard to see someone coming downtown to a baseball game and then staying for a movie or something...dunno. I'll be taking MetroLink there. It may not be the closest to me, but it is the easiest to get to.
Other than the one screen Moolah, this will be the closest theater for everyone east of Grand from Carondelet up to Hyde Park. Along with all of the visitors Alex mentioned, the fact that there is a Metrolink station in their basement and that people just like going downtown and hanging out on Washington should give MX a pretty strong customer base.

My family went to Chicago a few years ago and stayed at Embassy Suites downtown. We shopped & did the Field museum. Then we went to a movie at the theater next door to the hotel in the evening.
I can see the same scenario for visitors to St. Louis. Does the theater accommodate families in any of the three rooms? With CasillyCityMuseum as a legitimate unique family destination and a little shopping nearby (Saintnificent Mile?), I could see some businessmen bringing their families with them for a long weekend the next time they have business in St. Louis.

My 10 year old and I saw Lincoln there last night. Several other kids his age were there.newstl2020 wrote:^If I remember correctly, the theaters are 21+ only.

^That's good. It certainly makes this venture more feasible over the long term. I thought I read 21+ somewhere. I guess not!
The arcane age, rating, and timing limitations are posted on the MX webiste here: http://4671.formovietickets.com:2235/
Went there yesterday for a matinee to see Django. Its pretty nice. They have to work out some kinks (service issues, tablet ordering systems not running yet, just confusion with all new workers). But I think its a great addition to downtown. Once they get everything ironed out, it'll be a gem.
I like this development... but... When the heck are they going to get street lighting in? was down there last night and it was uncomfortably dark around the MX.
I believe the streetscape project starts sometime this year.beer city wrote:I like this development... but... When the heck are they going to get street lighting in? was down there last night and it was uncomfortably dark around the MX.

Yeah, right now it looks like the place where Bruce Wayne's parents were murdered, you know, before young Bruce grew up and became Batman! That streetscape project should help!beer city wrote:I like this development... but... The current streetscape isn't ideal but we are doing the best our budget allows after completing construction and tenant build-outs on this $250M project. In November 2012, the City of St. Louis Board of Public Service was awarded a $1.6M grant from East-West Gateway via STP-S federal funding with a required 20% local match to implement a $2M streetscape improvement plan from 7th to Memorial along Washington Avenue. The funding doesn't begin until October 2013 and any money we spend now won't be credited toward our match. So, if anyone would like to donate $30,000 for new light fixtures please be our guest! In the meantime we are excited to announce the installation of the MX Movies blade sign and marquee next week (2/26 - 3/1) which will add some additional life and light to the 600 Block of Washington and should have some new tenant announcements for the MX in the next few weeks. #JDS
^Thanks for the information. Looking forward to the progress. Sounds exciting. And thanks for investing in downtown.

^^ Thanks for the info. It's always great to have people doing the projects comment here!

Do you know if the streetscape improvements will include on street parking along Wash Ave? It would be great from a pedestrian perspective if so.mxstl wrote:The current streetscape isn't ideal but we are doing the best our budget allows after completing construction and tenant build-outs on this $250M project.
