hey, this is cool....

Next Schlafly Brewery Could Be on a Farm
http://www.stltoday.com/entertainment/d ... f6878.html

looks like they may be in need of a large parcel for a new brewery (within 300 miles) and ideally want it in St. Louis with an urban agriculture component.... I wonder if the old Pruitt-Igoe site fits the bill? This could be a great opportunity for McKee to show some of his skillz.

The guy in the article didn't sound overly optimistic about a St. Louis location. What are the odds this ends up in the city? The fact that Schlafly''s last expansion was in the county raises some doubt. But, their roots are here, so one can hope they stay true to the city that is printed on their label.

Let's hope they choose an urban location. This could be really coold and a great use of some of our urban prarie land. Contract with a good brownsfield tax attorney and the EPA will help clean up any urban contaminated land.

I'm sure city hall and MSD would be on board.

There may be brownfield credits in play on the riverfront south of downtown. 40-50 acres is big. I think the remaining vacant Pruitt-Igoe site is ~35 acres - perhaps they could squeeze in there. Any urban site will take tax credit, soil remediation, but the city needs to make it happen.

One would think/hope that if they were willing to go to Detroit to learn about urban agriculture practices, they would want to incorporate those practices in an urban environment here. Otherwise, it''s just farming.

Give Schlafly the Pruitt-Igoe land and let them do their thing.

Also, while the P-I site proper may be on the small side for what they're seeking, there's plenty of adjacent land - perhaps a tasting house/restaurant goes across the street, etc.

They should dream big and do a Farmworks-esque project at the Lemp Brewery site.

I Just hope they don't tear down brick beauties to assemble "large parcels of urban land'.

^ agreed. But, man, if done right an urban agriculture brewery at that site could be such a resounding testament to the rebirth of Saint Louis. In addition to the facility and ag land, I envision a solar array and a few wind turbines that could generate most of the energy needs (and maybe even some for surrounding neighborhood), a third restaurant and maybe even an urban ag educational center in collaboration with Gateway Greening and others. There would be partnerships with surrounding schools (probably not on the beer part, but what the heck!) and local residents among the new hires. Chickens might even find a "backyard" home.

Such a project would serve the memory and importance of this site well... it brings a classic, authentic Saint Louis craft to the site while bringing sustainable practices to the neighborhood in an inspiring and respectful manner.

Not to derail the previous discussion, but AB-Inbev takes the crown!

^Little need to at this point. But, I'd say that wholesale demo of historic homes is coming to an end. Yes, it's still very much happening...actually SLU just took down a whole neighborhood last year...so maybe I'm wrong, but I think it's at an end.

Does anyone on this forum have a list of beers brewed/bottled in the St. Louis ABI brewery? I heard a rumor that Becks is done here. I'd like to see the full list.

Is this next to Smash Bar?

If they have a good product, atmosphere, and management then I believe the Wash Ave community will embrace a neighborhood craft brewery. He's certainly trained under the some of the best. And that biochem degree will surely help.

I think we should be extremely proud of our local brewing community. The growth over the past five years and quality of product coming out is very impressive.

I'm preparing an instantaneously remain in St Louis in 2-3 several weeks with my partner. We want to check out the Brewery in St Louis. Any suggestions on hotels? Has anyone been on a factory trip there? Any insight/advice would be valued.
