This past weekend was the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO
Side Project Brewing earned a Gold Medal in the Dessert Stout or Pastry Stout category for their incredible Marble Lions. At the same time, Narrow Gauge Brewing Company picked up a Silver Medal in the Juicy or Hazy Imperial IPA category for King Fallen Flag.

OpEd from the business journal about building a brewery district as a “Big St. Louis Idea”.

https://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/new ... trict.html

The article is an excellent case study in the biggest problem facing St. Louis: St. Louisans.

These suburban rubes live such cloistered lives that they are shocked when they learn about the incredible amenities their community has to offer.

Take this gentleman Greg Janson. Greg was stunned to learn that Side Project is a world renowned brewery that attracts visitors from across the globe.

Greg would likely also shocked to learn that the same is true for Perennial Artisan Ales, the brewery that gave birth to Side Project.

But Greg shouldn’t be surprised. These Breweries (and the rest of the StL Craft Brew scene) have been setting the standard for more than a decade. And don’t take it from me. StL has been named the best beer city in America by all sorts of publications the last ten years. And it’s not because of A-B.

But thanks, Greg. You figured out about our beer scene (and offered this cool idea) just in time for the beer market to collapse making your vision basically impossible to create.

Maybe, just maybe, if suburbanites in this town actually got off of FB and looked around, they might actually realize this place is pretty cool and worth fighting for.

Also, it’s a dumb idea. Stop trying to take our cool brewery scene and turn into something lame like the RiNo in Denver (not the whole RiNo, but the brewing part).

Yes, StL has a great brew scene and is pretty well known for it. I don’t think we have done the best job of always promoting that across the country consistently

I do think not having as much of a scene downtown is disappointing

Redevelopment of two of our beautiful brewery complexes, Falstaff in Benton Park, and Lemp in Cherokee, should be higher on our redevelopment priority list. We can’t lose that history or architecture

I think there could be some good ideas to tie our city together with the redevelopment of these complexes. I like what the Midtown district was trying to do with a brewery row, was perfect for that part of town. Unfortunately lost Wellspent out of that group. But there’s some potential there with the Brickline and hopefully some more activity and development coming out of the soccer stadium and around Grand Center.

I dream of a brew, and arts redevelopment of Lemp

"Brewery Row" was always a bit of a stretch. It was pretty spread out and completely noncontagious. For it to work a brewery district they have to all be in the same general area. Like no more than a five minute walk apart.

KC has (had now that Double Shift is closed) a pretty nice node in their Brewers Alley. A few breweries, a cidery, and distillery, and an iTap all within a couple blocks.

In STL it wouldn't be terribly difficult to pull off, it would just require breweries to collaborate on an area to go. IMO the Landing is ripe for this. The Lemp Brewery complex would be fantastic too should somebody actually invest in it.

Unfortunately craft beer is in a weird place right now. It's lost a lot of its cool factor, the kids aren't drinking, and annual growth has been in recession territory for a couple years now. Money isn't cheap right now either. Don't expect a ton of big investments from our brewing community anytime soon.
