Old Bakery now open in Alton - Have yet to go - It looks like a large space and evidently they had a great first weekend - Pics look awesome, finally a place where you can have a beer and overlook the river. This could be a game changer for downtown Alton, which I have always thought has the great potential with the existing building stock and relation to the river. Now they just need to do something about the highway coming off the bridge.

Some more details of Schafly's organizational change in biz journals. Believe it explains why we haven't heard much about a new brewery or even the fact that a site has been selected.

http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/news ... eo-is.html

Schlafly brewed 60,000 barrels of beer in 2014, Kopman said. The company has said it plans to build a new brewery that could cost up to $20 million and would expand its brewing capacity to 100,000 to 150,000 barrels a year.

I was at Onesto last night and had a couple really good beers from Modern Brewery (St Louis based). I'm pretty in tune with the local beer scene but I've never heard of these guys. Is anyone on here familiar with them?

I've been buying some Cathedral Square lately from Schnucks. Did they bail on plans for a brewery/restaurant? I thought I remembered something happening on Lindell years ago.

^ last I heard they were still thinking about the Holy Corners location for a brewery/restaurant... I have it on my planned projects list but I haven't heard anything more in several months. They still are on Lindell, aren't they?

EDIT: The Post-Dispatch article about the revived plans for the Holy Corners brewery/restaurant was last Feb. (2014); not sure of the current status.

^^ Modern opened up shop around a year ago on Manchester kind of close to Macklind..... I don't believe they have a tasting room or bar area yet though. Good to hear you enjoyed their beers!

I know one of the owners. What questions did you have?

It's getting to the point where so many neighborhoods have their own breweries that St. Louis has a sort of pre-prohibition feel, where every neighborhood had breweries and pubs where people would go not only to drink, but also to buy pales of beer to take home. Except today people use growlers instead of pales/buckets.

Nothing specific. I had their IPA and Saison. Both were very good. I was just curious about the basics: where they were located, if they had a tasting room, when they got started, etc. since I wasnt' familiar with them.

They do not have a tasting room yet. They sell their beer to restaurants/bars only at this point. Do believe they have plans to open a tasting room, but nothing imminent at this point. I've had pretty much all of their beers and have yet to try one I did not enjoy. Arkham's Finest is outstanding and so is the Citrapolis.

They certainly have the schooling for this....Very impressive resumes for guys in their 20s
Beamer Eisele (President/CEO):

Born and Raised in St. Louis, Beamer graduated from Lindbergh High School (2004) before attending Harvard University (class of 2008). There began his love for the creation of beer.

While at Harvard, he was afforded the opportunity to craft his own curriculum relative to brewing and beer. These classes included Brewing Science, History of Brewing Civilizations, Science of Beer and Food Pairing. To complement these studies, he spent a semester as an intern with Harpoon Brewery, gaining hands-on experience in the QA/QC lab, brew house and cellar. Also during his collegiate career, Beamer assisted in the opening (and later, managed), Harvard’s first on-campus pub, The Cambridge Queen’s Head. Here he implemented the “Beer School” program, a monthly seminar at the pub to share his passion and knowledge with his fellow beer enthusiasts and classmates. Each session covered a specific topic pertaining to the brewing industry, featuring guest speakers Sam Calagione (Dogfish Head), Steve Hindy (Brooklyn Brewery), Jim Koch (Sam Adams), Jamie Schier (Harpoon), and more.

After graduating in 2008 Beamer worked on the sales and distribution team for Harpoon Brewery before heading back home to work at Schlafly’s under Dan Kopman (CEO/Founder). He then moved west where he worked at Hudson Vineyards, one of the premier vineyards in California. Beamer continued his education completing the Master Brewers Program at the University of California-Davis, studying under revered professors, Dr. Michael Lewis and Charles Bamforth. He graduated from the program with an international certification in both Brewing Methods and Fermentation Science.

Now back in his hometown of St. Louis, Beamer spends his time playing golf (poorly), rooting for the Cardinals return to the World Series, and brewing the perfect beer at Modern Brewery.

Ronnie Fink (VP of Brewing Operations):

Born and raised in St. Louis as well, Ronnie also graduated from Lindbergh High School (2004). Following his time at Lindbergh, Ronnie took to Springfield Missouri where he attended Missouri State University (formerly known as SMS).

At Missouri State, Ronnie studied Chemistry and Biology with the intent of heading to dental school and becoming a dentist. However, during his Junior year, Ronnie recognized that his aspirations had changed. He decided that he wanted to get into the brewing industry as well.

After graduating from MSU, Ronnie headed to California to attend the Master Brewer’s Program at UC-Davis with Beamer. Following the Brewer’s Program, he completed an internship with Deschutes Brewery in Oregon, before being hired on as a brewer at Free State Brewery in Lawrence, Kansas. Within three years time, he became lead brewer, managed the cellar and filter operations, managed sensory analysis and tasting panel, and implemented and oversaw their Quality Analysis/Quality Control laboratory. Naturally, Ronnie found it quite difficult to part ways with Free State–he had built strong friendships with his colleagues and learned so much about brewing during his stay.

When he is not brewing the perfect beer at The Modern Brewery, Ronnie spends as much time as he can with his lovely bride, Angela (married Sept. 2012), and the remainder is split on the golf course, playing ice hockey, watching football, rooting for the Cardinals and Blues, and catching up on the latest Marvel/DC rumors.

^ or it would sure be nice if Schafly made a decision on their new brewery. Understand getting the new chief up to speed and an urban farm add on at some point would be pretty cool but disappointing to see them great the good press while still meeting a big chunk of their supply via third party breweries outside of the region If not mistaken.

Build the St. Louis brewery Schafly!! Still a fan of a new North Riverfront facility to provide some balance against the southside heavy weight!!
