It has to be downtown close to the convention center.

Rather than a brewhub (which might not even increase overall industry jobs in the region) I'd like to see a Saint Louis Brewer's Guild Hall in a historic downtown building where you could enjoy the various fine craft brews of Saint Louis. Sort of like the experience of the Hofbrau Haus but a cooperative venture.... I think such a thing could kill.
^ LOVE your idea of a local beer museum and craft beer hall. I would choose one of 2 locations. Obviously, the Lemp Brewery complex would be great, as part of a larger residential/retail development. Also, the old Falstaff #10 site would be another place I'd love to see house this type of beer hall/museum. I would offer every craft beer within 75 miles and have a museum that goes through the history of the industry here. A large German beer ball would be awesome too. Can you imagine Oktoberfest at a place like this, sampling all of the local craft fall beers!
I love these kind of what should be posts... so much room for imagination.

I'm not sure if your idea is just an old fashion beer hall or if you were thinking of more production space, but if its primarily a beer hall i would suggest 1711 Locust as a possibility. Especially if the NLEC gets shut down. Maybe MERS could be convinced to give up the parking next door for an outdoor patio/beer garden.

Also, if it is call "The Brewer's Guild" maybe it could partially re-purpose the signage of the soon to be demoed "Guild Building" in Downtown Clayton. Just a thought...

Schlafly officially distributing to Chicago. via biz journal
The company will start by sending 840 cases of its Pumpkin Ale to the Chicago this Friday. Schlafly will follow that up with a shipment of its Christmas Ale in November. Come early 2015, Schlafly will add more brews to its Chicago distribution, including its pale, Kolsch and APA.

...

The company is still exploring opening a “pilot brewery” in the Chicago, but doesn’t have anything to report yet, Brodsky said.

...

The company has said it is planning an expansion of its St. Louis production. Kopman has said the company is looking at properties in north St. Louis and north St. Louis County. The new brewery would require between 20 acres and 50 acres and cost up to $20 million. The additional brewery would boost Schlafly’s production capacity from 50,000 barrels a year to 100,000 to 150,000.
Brodsky said he knew of no developments in the company’s search for another St. Louis brewery site.

Thanks. If we couldn't get a local thing going, what do you think of having something like an authentic Hofbrau Haus like the one opening in Cleveland next week? It is located downtown in The Hermit Club, tucked behind Playhouse Square's theaters. It will have a 1,000 seat beer garden.

Or maybe the best of both world's where we a local beer-centric redevelopment at the Lemp features a museum and local beer guild (and complimentary monthly growler of local beer of choice for residents) and the Hofbrau Haus puts popos in seats downtown.

For further proof that St. Louis' craft beer scene is booming, a craft beer retailer is coming soon to downtown Clayton....Craft Beer Cellar St. Louis is set to open next month at 8113 Maryland Ave.
...Craft Beer Cellar was founded in 2010 by Kate Baker and Suzanne Schalow. Today, the company has eight locations and three others in development, including Clayton, Hartford, Conn., and Nashua, N.H. Franchisees pay a $10,000 franchise fee plus 2 percent royalties, according to the company’s website.

The CBC now offers free beer delivery within 3 miles of the store. Thank you Jesus!

Roger, funny you say that. I sent Hofbrau an email (total shot in the dark) about 5 years ago, after I had been to the one in Munich and Vegas. I told them how they should consider an STL location and gave him all the reasons. Since then, we added a nice authentic beer garden (UCB) and have a lot more craft beer options here. I still think a Hofbrau House would do great here. We are a beer City! I've always felt that the Lucas School House site would make an awesome German Beer Hall. Can you imagine the big open gymnasium-type room with long tables, a German band and pretzel girls. I'm not sure about the old church next door, but with the stained glass and atmosphere, that would make a great location for expansion of the beer hall. I'm shocked that property is not being utilized, at least to my knowledge.

Might actually be a good Ballpark Village tenant. (Don't get mad at me for saying that!)

^^ That's a great property and I don't know what's up with it.... I believe the GIlls were supposed to do a event space with it a few years ago but I guess it didn't happen. Would it have space for an outdoor beer garden?

My preference by the way is for a space more in the heart of downtown.... btw, Cleveland also just opened this up downtown:

Something like that would be great for WashAve.

This seems as good a place as any to ask this...

I'd like to send a friend of mine in Riverside CA who's a liquor distributor a selection of local brews (and possibly wines) as a thank you for a favor he did for us earlier in the year. Does anyone here know of a store or distributor who'd be able to help me put together a grab-bag of stuff and ship it to him (I've checked - shipping alcohol between MO and CA is allowed).

TIA,

-RBB

Plus a Goshen Coffee pop-up.... they might as well get a 24 hour license.

Work right around the corner from 4 Hands, and all that stuff is wonderful. The beer is AWESOME and keeps getting better. The Dave Bailey food is great (if unfortunately pricey). And Goshen coffee being over there every day is going to threaten to make a coffee-drinker out of me. (And while I like coffee, I don't love it and thus I've been able to avoid the habit of it.)

^ I'm really not sure why this area isn't on the radar of more developers. There's still bit of cool housing stock available in LaSalle Park (sadly, not much). There are small/growing successful businesses nearby and the mammoth employer of Purina. This area bridges the gap between downtown and Soulard.

But there is a real lack of restaurants and housing, and tons of space to build on.

I can't guarantee a single development would be a big success, but it's another perfect spot for a re-development plan. Wish it would happen.

Urban Chesnut in the grove probably has some of the rudest staff I've come across in St. Louis. Hate to say this and I love their beer, but maybe they could work on that. Anyone else notice this?

^I've actually had the exact opposite experience there, but that could totally be a time of day/luck of the draw thing.

Last time I was there they replaced my leaky growler for no cost and were very talkative/friendly/informative while I was sampling. Although I did have my one-year old sitting on the bar by me. I was that guy...
