That's a bit disappointing considering the location. I was originally hoping they'd lease it to a third party, then that they'd bring a little more to the table with their own concept.roger wyoming II wrote:The Webster cafe/bookstore space has now opened.... looks like pretty sparse offerings but at least it's an open retail spot.

Very uninspiring concept. The Loft District deserves better.

Pure plates is opening in Kirkwood but the article states they article states they're scouting city locations next. Could downtown be next?

Per Mahe at STLMAG,
4 restaurants are scheduled to open this month:
A2, the gluten free place on Wash Ave
Missouri Bar & Grille's re-opening
Shift
and Sugar Fire
It also looks like Wheelhouse owners' second spot will be coming later this Spring in the same Cupples Building.... StartBar, which looks to be an arcade bar. (per Presby and KShapiro editing.)

^ Don't know for sure, but I believe it is from what Shapiro said a bit ago about them having a second concept up their sleeve.
After admiring it many times walking through downtown, I just realized that the beautiful red building on Olive is the Chemical Building. Does anyone know if this is occupied at all, or is it completely empty? It's such a gorgeous building, I'm surprised I haven't heard anything about it being on the radar for development.

The 1015 Locust mystery has been revealed as Dave Bailey announced yet another venue space, this one called Slate. Should open sometime this summer as well as Willow, his new space at the old Left Bank Books. Shift opens next week.
Last I heard he was still working on the BBQ space at the old Bussone's. How nice of Bailey to at least share some of downtown's food/beverage scene with some others. lol. I guess the last remaining mystery is what's going on in the 1001 Locust space that has a big $ restaurant build-out permit.

Is there any sort of city feedback website for suggestions? I saw a movie this weekend and I'm still amazed at the lack of theaters in the City. Yes I know there is a small one on Washington, and there's the one in the CWE, but in terms of total screens and showtimes I would love to see a larger multiplex in places like the Grove, and near the Fox Theater. Wish someone would get on that!

Moolah is near-ish the Fox. Also, the Hi Pointe is in the city limits. But I wouldn't mind more!
^ I wouldn't be surprised if McKee has tried to work or is trying to work in a multiplex theater somewhere along Tucker Ave. Lot space for big multiplex and surface parking, near Wash Ave loft district/downtown with a growing population with more development possible in near future, Jeff Arm and hopefully Chemical. The key, unfortunately is the parking has to be free and plenty.
Or maybe at some point you see it proposed for the bottleworks site but don't see that happening until all stadium and convention upgrades/expansions have been exhausted.

^ I can see it part of Grand Center development tied to a parking structure. But I think your still stuck with the reality that any multiplex development is going to be looking for free parking, either a lot of surface and or structured financed through a TIF or similar tax redirection. Downtown has plenty of parking but still tied to either paid/private parking structures or the fact that treasury office has so much debt building parking that it can't afford not to charge or at least that is my two cents.

I remember the Union Station cinema. It was such a disaster. Groups of teens would talk throughout the movie, making it difficult to focus on the film. Management was unable to police the patrons. Doing a muliplex in the city would be challenging. I kind of like having multiple smaller, locally-owned boutique cinemas that cater to an adult crowd.
Good point. The boutique coverage across the City's Central Corridor is pretty solid at this point, from MX, Moolah, Chase, Hi-Pointe, and Tivoli just across the border, and all offer great movie watching experiences. Of all the things DT could use at this point, I think another movie theater is pretty far down the list.Presbyterian wrote:I kind of like having multiple smaller, locally-owned boutique cinemas that cater to an adult crowd.
I do understand the desire for more of a multiplex option. But I don't go to enough movies to need it. I pretty much stick to the Hi-Pointe, and I'll go a bit down the road into Richmond Heights (I think?) to the Esquire if Hi-Pointe isn't showing what I'm looking for.

To me the logical place for a multiplex in the city would be the Ideaville devlopment at the federal mogul foundry site. It might kill the Moolah though, which would be a shame. I could imagine Dave and busters moving there as well. Ideally they would keep it pseudo urban with limited surface parking and residential or office above it.
Not to stray too much off topic from this site, but I feel like because we have the MX, Moolah, Chase, Hi-Pointe and Tivoli the more ideal place to build a new theater would be in south city somewhere considering they (we) all have to travel to the central corridor or the county already. I'd say there's enough theaters in the central corridor, more might endanger those that are already there.

^ I agree; a successful multiplex could vaporize a couple existing boutiques. But what I would like for downtown is a solid comedy club and figuring out what to do with the Orpheum.
- 3,235
We need a viable Orpheum that hosts 3 events a week. Comedy, shows, concerts. Would be a huge boon for downtown.
Keep the megaplex cine's out. Would much rather see 1-4 screen theaters throughout the city.
